told delegates at the 2014 India New Zealand
Business Council summit in Auckland this

The INZBC Summit was made up of four
symposiums, all of which were encompassed
by the overall theme, Business Beyond Barriers.
Each symposium hosted an array of esteemed
speakers, including Steven Joyce; Tim Ng of

Thapar; Andrew Paykel of Fisher and Paykel
and Peter Bull of Education New Zealand.
The 2014 Business Summit was hosted

regarding trade relations between New Zealand

Community seeks solutions to migrant woes

T he message was loud and clear: listen to our

plea.
That was the underlying concern for scores
of Indian community organisations and leaders
who gathered in Auckland last week to voice their
grievances to political leaders.
The Kiwi Indian Conclave 2014, organised
by the New Zealand Indian Central Association,
attracted more than 150 attendees at the Ellerslie
Events Centre.
The issues: Migrant Indians have been facing
difficulties in their adopted homeland and the
organisers wanted action on their concerns from
political leaders ahead of the general election in
September.
All the politicians were asked for their
responses on 18 different issues that directly
influence Indians in New Zealand. These issues
included Security concerns, Educational parity,
Equal employment opportunities, Capital gains
tax, International students concern, Bilateral trade,
Domestic violence, Health , New immigrants,
Home ownership, Overseas investment, List MPs,
Voluntary retirement, Multicultural NZ, Shortage
of Doctors, Superannuation, NZ as a republic and
Language.
It happened for the first time in history that
Kiwi Indians have come out to speak on the issues.
Around 15O Kiwi Indians put forward their wish
list in front of political parties. All major political
parties were invited to the event, including
National, Labour, Internet Mana, Green, New
Zealand First and Maori Party. While NZ first and
Maori parties were absent from the event, the other
parties made a significant presence to the event.
Veer Khar, President of Manukau Indian
Association and Chairman of NZICA, who
was the main organiser of the event, says that
Indian community has a participatory role
in their country of adoption - New Zealand.
He said, Community has learnt how to pass
their message. We want you to consider us
(community people) important.
Taking in concern the recent killing of
dairy owner Arun Kumar, the political leaders
agreed that strong actions must be taken in
order to reduce such crimes and ensure a safe
environment for the community.
Labour party spokesman Phill Goff, talking
on the non-recognition of Indian education
degrees by New Zealand employers, strongly
condemned the point system of New Zealand
government. He said, You need to change
the point system or you need to recognise the
qualifications.
Indian weekender regularly receives
feedback from migrant who feel that they are not
able to get employments even after having well
recognised Indian educational degrees.
Minister of Justice Judith Collins and
Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi representing National
party, said that many Indians are with National
party and they represent community in the
parliament. Collins said that their party is doing
well and can do even better.
Phill Goff said that their party will focus on
security concerns. He said, I am satisfied with
the punishment policies. But I must rather stop
crimes than punishing.
Green Party spokesperson Jan Logie and
Internet- Mana Party candidate Roshni sami, also
addressed the issues of concern and promised
better regulations to deal with the problems of
the community.

T he Kiwi Indian Conclave was a really
useful forum to interact with the Indian
community on issues, to hear their concerns
and address their questions.
The questions were on important topics.
Top of the list in the wake of the tragic deaths
of Blessie Gotingco and Arun Kumar was
community safety and the impact of cuts in
policing. The increasing difficulty facing first
home buyers, recognition of the qualifications
of new migrants, maintaining heritage
languages for future generations and opening
up trade with India to match our free trade
agreement with China were also issues.
I enjoyed the opportunity to set out Labour?s
positive policies in these areas, within the time
constraints that were regrettably necessary.
Congratulations to the organisers for the
efforts to promote democratic participation
and accountability from their elected
representatives.

H istory was created today when about 150

strong Kiwi Indian leadership representing
various associations and focus groups put
forward their wish list in front of political parties
seeking engagement for empowerment.
This exercise of getting on one platform and
delivering a coherent verdict lays the foundation
of Kiwi Indian politics for hence forth. The
leaders emphasized that they feel neglected and
exploited by the very political system that they
are so keen to engage with. Message was sent
loud and clear and the great outcome was that the
political parties repeatedly assured that they will
make an extra effort to engage.
The professionalism of the event
management, quality of the deliberations, wide
participation, timeliness of the structured event
and facility provisions were highly acclaimed by
all present. Indian community has a participatory
role in their country of adoption - New Zealand
and the community will do what it takers.
Foundation has been laid.
I t was a privilege to be invited to the first Kiwi-
Indian Conclave. The event was very helpful
in providing the opportunity for both formal
interactions by panel discussion, as well as
informal discussion and networking, while also
enjoying the lunch provided of delicious Indian
food! There were 18 well considered questions
raised on a variety of topics relevant to the Indian
community, though security issues stood out
among them, particularly in reflection upon the
tragic death of Arun Kumar. Internet MANA has
a particular focus on young people, it was great
to see a few in attendance and asking questions,
as well as to make contact with the national
women?s organisation. As Laila mentioned in
her speech at the forum, consultation processes
need to ?move beyond treating constituencies
like ATM machines, and to reach meaningful
interaction on policy?. Going forward, as we
approach some of the policy issues raised, we
now have contact points and look forward to
working in consultation with Kiwi-Indians who
call NZ home!

P riyanca Radhakrishnan, the newcomer in
the Labour Partys list for elections has been
ranked No. 23 in the list. She might be a new hope
for Indian Communities, for raising their concerns
in Parliament but only after the party polls 31.6%
or more.
In an exclusive interview to Indian
Weekenders Swati Sharma, she talks about her
family, work and future plans.
Swati Sharma: What is your feeling about
this selection?
Priyanca Radhakrishnan: I am honoured to
be ranked so highly on the Labour Party list, and
it is a great responsibility too one that I take
seriously. I feel it also sends a clear message to our
ethnic minority communities that Labour takes
us seriously and wants to see our communities
well represented in Parliament.
SS: Have you been with the Labour party
before?
PR: I joined the Party in 2006 and since then
I have worked hard, contributing to our internal
policy development process and have been active
at the local and regional Party organizational
levels. I have also campaigned actively, at the last
two General Elections, to increase our Party vote.
SS: Your ranking in the list is quite high and
hence there are good chances of you to get into
parliament. What do you have to say on that?
PR: I look forward to getting into Parliament
and working hard to do my bit to ensure that
New Zealand is a better, fairer country for all of
us. I also look forward to being able to provide
our ethnic communities with a strong voice in
Parliament and working with my colleagues to
make New Zealand a safer country.

PR: I have an extremely supportive family
and truly, if this had not been the case, I probably
would not be here today. I was born in Chennai,
India but my family is from Kerala. I grew up
in Singapore, but used to go back to India every
year over the school holidays. My parents moved
back to India 15 years ago and currently live
in Chennai. My sister and her husband live in
Canada. I am married to a wonderful man who
has supported me every step of the way and
continues to do so. He grew up in Christchurch
and we were married in 2010 in Hanmer Springs.
I am grateful to him and my in-laws for their love
and support throughout this journey.
I suspect politics runs in my blood. My great
grandfather was very active in left wing progressive
politics in India, and played an instrumental role
in the formation of the state of Kerala. My parents
taught me to value social justice, and to lead my
life with integrity, working to support those who
are more vulnerable than I. Soon after I moved
to New Zealand as an International student, I was

was my first experience of running a campaign
and being elected to a position!
I chose to enter politics through the Labour
Party a couple of years ago for a few different
reasons. Firstly, I am grateful to have been offered
a number of opportunities when I migrated to
New Zealand, and I want to give something back
to this country that I now call home. Secondly, I
have spent most of my working life advocating
for positive change; I see this move as a natural
next step. Finally, I believe that I have the skills
and experience to be able to contribute effectively
to New Zealands political decision-making and
to serve our ethnic communities in Parliament.
SS: What is your role/work as Ministry of
Womens Affairs policy analyst?
PR: Policy analysts identify and define
problems, gather evidence to find solutions to
these problems and suggest policy solutions to
the Government of the day. That is, we looked at
policies and legislation that was being developed
by other Government agencies, and analysed
whether they made life better or worse for women.
SS: How long have you been a part of
Shakti? What do feel about current situation
of migrant women in New Zealand?
PR: I worked with Shakti Community Council
Inc. (Shakti) for close to six years. Working with
Shakti gave me an in-depth understanding of the
issue of violence against ethnic minority women and
the types of support our women and children need
to be safe. Violence against women is a significant
issue for all New Zealanders, and I feel that a lot
more needs to be done to keep all women, including
our ethnic women, safe from violence.
SS: If got selected as MP, what would be your

main focus? What do you expect to do?
PR: I want to be a strong voice for our ethnic
communities in Parliament. To me this means
being a strong advocate for our people so that the
issues we face are brought to light and addressed.
It also means ensuring that the contributions that
our communities make to New Zealand society,
are valued. I am passionate about ensuring that
everyone is able to live with dignity that means
better paid jobs, more time with their families,
quality education and equitable access to justice
and healthcare. I am also passionate about safety
and justice for migrant workers who are too
often made to work long hours for lesser pay, for
our small business owners who should be able to
go to work without fearing for their lives, and for
our women and children.
SS: Party poll of 31.6% is required to get you
into parliament. What do you think, how easy or
difficult it would be?
PR: Labour has excellent policies, and many
more will be made public in the next few months.
As a Party, we believe in fairness for everyone,
regardless of background and I am sure that will
resonate with voters. If voters realize that they have
a choice, and exercise that choice on September 20, I
am confident that Labour will poll well. I have already
started getting out and about and meeting with as
many people as I can so that they can get to know
me. If voters see me as a credible representative, and
would like me to get into Parliament, then they need
to get out there on September 20 and make sure their
voices are heard.
There are a number of issues I am passionate
about, especially in the areas of social development
and justice and I look forward to being part of a
team that brings about positive change for New
Zealand.

Council adopts budget for 2014
A nnual Plan 2014/2015 has been adopted
by the Auckland Council that outlines
councils planning for the next financial year as
well as its investments and financial policy.
The plan details the organisations proposed
budget, activities and investment programme
for the next financial year, including an average
rate increase of 2.5 per cent. It also includes
local board agreements that highlight each
of the boards local priorities, projects and
advocacy issues.
The council plans to invest $1.15 billion in
new and improved assets, including:
215m to purchase further electric trains and
$70m to progress the City Rail Link
$97m to invest in local and sports parks
Bindra elected chairman of CANZ
M ahesh Bindra has been unanimously
elected as the Chairperson of Corrections
Association of New Zealand (CANZ) for
South Auckland Prison. CANZ is the biggest
Union of Prison Officers in New Zealand
and works to protect the rights and working
conditions of Department of Corrections
staff including Prison Officers, Probation
Officers and Support Staff. While Maori are
over- represented in the prison population, the
Officers managing them come from a wide
range of ethnicities.
The tenure is for one year and there are
chances that he might be nominated to the
National Executive Committee of CANZ in the

Working together to stop family violence

T he high rate of family violence in New
Zealand is unacceptable.
While we have the lowest crime rate in 35
years, violent crime is not falling as fast.
About half of all homicides in New Zealand
are a result of family violence, and about half of
all violent offence charges in the courts relate to
family violence.

make a huge difference to the outcome. The
Green Party wants to build on our strengths
deliver better public services for New Zealand
families. We want to ensure home is a safe place
for all women, children, and men, and ensure
victims are not re-victimised.
Weve announced a cross-Government
package to strengthen efforts across Justice,
Police, Corrections, and Courts to improve the
safety of family violence victims and make
services more responsive to their individual needs.
We will establish a Chief Victims Advisor to
advise the Minister of Justice on the needs and
views of victims of crime.
We will trial an intensive case management
service to provide specialist support for family
violence victims at high risk of serious harm or
situation needs to change and it needs to change
now. New Zealand First recognises that the rights
of victims are paramount, and that the offenders
rights are subject to the rights of both the victim
and the state.
Unemployment, poor parenting, inappropriate
peer group pressure, and other socio-economic
factors contribute markedly to our crime rate.
We advocate a balanced policy prescription
containing elements of prevention, apprehension,
punishment, and rehabilitation. Frequently prison
inmates come out worse than when they went in.
This failure of rehabilitation is not acceptable.
New Zealand First will introduce a category
of outcome sentences which put the onus on the
criminal to show that he or she is ready for release.
New Zealand Firsts policies are tough, but fair
and non-restrictive for law-abiding citizens.
New Zealand First will:
Put more police into local communities.
Numbers are declining again so we would
forget she even existed.
They sat on the alleged crime for weeks,
hoping it would go away, and never intending to

gases per person, and we must play our part.

safety service to empower women to leave violent
relationships. We will trial mobile safety alarms
with GPS technology for victims so they can
immediately notify Police of an emergency, and
their location, and introduce legislation to allow
courts to stipulate GPS monitoring on high-risk
family violence offenders.
We will also explore the possibility of a
conviction disclosure scheme which would allow
people to ask whether their partner has a history of
violence. Concerned third parties, such as parents,
would also be able to request this information, so
long as they have good reason to.
Our initiatives will improve awareness,
immediately step up recruiting and training.
Put extra police on the beat and more patrol
cars on the road, day and night. Sufficient
support staff will be employed so frontline
officers are not tied up with paperwork.
Ensure a clear focus on crime prevention and
investigation, and a clear line between traffic
enforcement and general duties policing.
Introduce legislation to ban all criminal gangs.
Overhaul current legislation relating to the
sentencing of serious, violent offenders to
provide greater protection for the public. If
there is not genuine rehabilitation the offender
will serve the full sentence.
An end to sole-charge police stations.
Minimum double-manning of all remote and
rural stations.
Full resourcing for police to enable them to
serve our communities best.
Fast, easy access for police officers to all
the tools and equipment required to do their
jobs properly, including firearms as lawfully
necessary.
Active engagement by police with our schools

Advisory Groups report on Family Violence and
will strengthen existing initiatives that are making
a real impact in communities.
Together with the Governments work around
Whanau Ora and focus on vulnerable children, it
will help future generations of children to grow up
without family violence.

Integrate emergency services into a single
Ministry of Emergency Services. Civil
Defence, Police, Fire and Ambulance will
share facilities, stations, radio communication
facilities, vehicles and civilian support staff.

services to better coordinate services.

I am pleased to support this ever expanding
community.
Recently as Associate Tourism Minister
I addressed the India New Zealand Business
Council at a Beyond Business Matters event in
Auckland.
India is one of three Emerging Markets that
Tourism New Zealand is investing in. Since
becoming a priority emerging market, Tourism
New Zealand has grown its presence in India,
and has more than tripled its investment.
New Zealand hosted 32,064 visitors from
India in the year ending March 2014, up
almost 7 per cent on the previous year with
Indian visitors spending on average NZ$3680
per person (excluding airfares) whilst in New
Zealand.
Priorities for the coming year include the
2015 Cricket World Cup, with India scheduled
to play two pool games in New Zealand (against
Ireland in Hamilton on March 8, and Zimbabwe
in Auckland on March 14). New Zealand will
also host a quarter-final and a semi-final, either
of which could potentially feature India.
I was pleased to hear that the Prime Ministers
of Australia and New Zealand have agreed that
people travelling to both countries for the event
will only need to apply for one visa. This will
streamline procedures for genuine Cricket
World Cup spectators and participants, making
it easier for people wanting to enjoy the Cup.

Last year I was in India to attend the Asian
Development Bank Annual Conference which
was held in Delhi. It was a good opportunity
to meet with Indian business leaders and I
was able to sit down with them to talk about
opportunities for India and New Zealand to
work together.
Earlier this year I attended the Kiwi-Indian
Hall of Fame 2014 Event alongside Prime
Minister John Key who was the Guest of
Honour. It was a great evening attended by over
300 whos who of the Kiwi-Indian community.
The institution of the Kiwi Indian Hall of
Fame provides a way to honour, acknowledge
real difference to the Kiwi Indian
community and New Zealand. Its
the second year its been held and
has become the signature event of
the growing Indian community in
NZ. Well done to those who were
recognised!
It is great to be able to attend
these events around the country but
I especially enjoy the local events
held in my hometown of Rotorua.
My family and I take part in many
activities held by the local Indian
community including the annual Holi festivals
and Kabaddi tournaments. These events are
good opportunities to join with and celebrate
the strong cultures in our community in a
unique and fun way. I always enjoy Holi
and in particular appreciate the significance
of bringing together people from different
communities, backgrounds and faiths.
A recent highlight was the annual Kabaddi
Tournament in Te Puke where two of my sons
took part in the competition. They had a great
time and were impressed with this exciting
game.
As we continue to work towards a better
relationship with India, I remain committed to
continuing with my strong involvement in the
Indian community in my electorate of Rotorua
and across the country.

Tauranga and the Indian

Community

T auranga has a very strong Indian

community. Last years census showed
that the number of Indians in Tauranga and
the Western Bay of Plenty has almost doubled
since 2006. Tauranga as a whole is changing
rapidly and becoming more diverse, which
is adding vibrancy and a fantastic mix of
cultures to the city.
A great example of this is our annual
Multicultural Festival, which is now in
its 15th year. This year over 30 cultures
were represented,
with cultural
performances, food
stalls and arts and
crafts on offer.
In January I
was privileged to
be a guest at the
inaugural Sikh
parade to mark
the birth of Guru
Gobind Singh. This was the first time
the march had been conducted outside of
Auckland, and there are plans to make it
an annual event. Around 2500 people took
part and it is expected to be even bigger next
year.
Last month Tauranga hosted the World
Champion Women Kabaddi Team from
India as the final game of a five-match series
against a New Zealand side. I was joined
by my National Parliamentary colleagues

Fasting During Ramadan, A Universal practice
F or Muslims, Ramadhan is a great favour from
Almighty Allah but it can only be considered
as such if they observe it properly.Otherwise the
month of Ramadhan will arrive with all its virtues
and blessing andthen pass by without us gaining
anythingfrom it.
Ramadhan is the most blessed month of
Islamic calendar in which Allah S.W.T. guides
us to the good deeds. It is the month in which
the Quran was revealed, as clear guidance and
judgment to all people. It is the month in which
good deeds are multiplied and sins are forgiven.
Allah S.W.T. has enjoined fasting during the day
as a pillar of Islam and made the extra prayers
during the night voluntary. If anyone observes
fasting believing in its obligation and anticipating
its rewards, all his previous sins are forgiven.
In this month, the gates of paradise are opened
and faithful increase good deeds. The gates of
Hell are shut and sinful acts reduced. Devils
are chained, so they are no longer able to affect
faithful people as they do in other times.
It is stated in a Hadith of prophet
Mohammad(SAW):If my nation realizes what
Ramadhan really is, they would wish that the whole
year should be converted into Ramadan.Such is
the value of this month of fasting.
The Arabic word for fasting is sawm. Its
original meaning is to abstain from something, if
for example one refrains from speaking or eating,
this will be termed saaim.
But in Islamic terminology it relates to
the abstention from food, drink and sexual
intercourse from dawn until sunset with the
intention of fasting.
According to history, fasting was widely
observed by almost all religions and nations. In
fact, the origin of fasting stems from the time of
Adam, as it is mentioned in a prophetic tradition
that fasting in Ayyam-e-Beez, the 13th, 14th and
15thof each Islamicmonth was obligatory in his
Sharia (law).
It was a very significant part of Prophet
Musas Sharia,and observed by Jews on Yom
Kippur (the Day of Atonement) and on a number
of less important fast days.It was also observed
in Christianity and in ancient Greece.In certain
eastern religions, the practice of abstinence is
connected with the doctrine of reincarnation.
In Hinduism and Buddhism, the term Barat,
whichmeans fasting is used and considered a
very special form of worship for the development
ofspiritual discipline.
In short, sawm (fasting) was well known to
virtually all the major religions and nations and
was considered an excellent method of attaining
physical and spiritual discipline.

and spiritual benefits. From the medical point of
view fasting is a very good method of maintaining
good health.
From a spiritual perspective fasting generates
patience, tolerance, kindness and sympathy
which help to create a powerful community whose
goal is to work hard for the betterment of Islam,
Muslims and the world around them. And at the
same time, it also gives us a true realization of the
needs of the poor - those who suffer from hunger
and starvation and shortage of food the whole
year long. But the most important and significant
objective of fasting is to create an environment
where there is no difference between the rich and
the poor, a slave and a master, all live equally
within a particular atmosphere and environment,
and all suffer equally from thirst and hunger.
This is the most unique example of the equality
and unity which Islam tries to establish amongst
people.

The Essence of Fasting

F asting is a bounty, grace and gift of Allah
Taala to His slave. It has not been made
obligatory for going without meals. It has
been enjoined upon those who have faith
so that they can attain the pleasure of Allah
Taala and become pious. It energizes the
strength of servitude to Him. It is sustenance
for the spiritual strength to be fortified.
The essence of fasting is stated in the
Holy Quran in the following Verse wherein
Allah Taala states, O Believers! Fasting
has been made obligatory upon you as was
made obligatory upon those before you, so
that you may become pious. [ S u r a h 2 , V
e r s e 1 8 3 ] According to Hazrat Data Ganj
Bakhsh (Radiallahu Taala Anh) hunger is a
cause of trouble to the body but a source
of life to the heart and soul. Eating to ones
fill strengthens the stomach but hunger
strengthens the inner and natural state.
He who endeavours hard to strengthen the
inner state is dearer and a special slave of
Allah Taala. He is protected against worldly
worries and concerns. Hunger is the food of
sincere men, religion of the disciples and
the imprisonment of Shaitaan.
Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)
is reported to have said, The stomach of
a hungry person is dearer to Allah than
seventy wise pious people. Hazrat Shaikh
Bishr Haafi (Radiallahu Taala Anh) once
said, Hunger cleanses the heart of malice,
kills desires, makes one the heir of the
refinement of knowledge and reveals its
mysteries.
The essence of fasting is to weaken
the forces which are Shaitaans means
of leading us back to evil. It is therefore
essential to cut down ones intake from
what one would consume on a normal night,
when not fasting. No benefit is derived from
the fast if one consumes as much as one
would usually take during the day and night
combined. There is no receptacle more
odious to Allah Taala than a belly stuffed
full with lawful food. Of what use is the fast
as a means of conquering Allah Taalas
enemy and abating appetite, if at the time
of Iftaar one not only makes up for all one
has missed during the daytime, but also
indulges in a variety of extra foods? It has
become the custom these days to stock
up for Ramadaan with all kinds of foods,
and emphasis is placed so much on food
that womenfolk spend most of their days
preparing for Iftaar rather than making
Ibaadat. A certain Saint of Allah Taala once
said that a sin is written for one whose efforts
during the day are made only to prepare for
breaking fast.
Eating ravenously diminishes the
importance of fasting. Fasting basically
aims at curbing the desire and the lower
self, training them to observe temperance.
This is how desire and the lower self are
restrained, curbed, tamed and coached into
meritorious habit of feeling content during
fasting and observing temperance in food,
controlling the tongue and restraining other
behaviour for putting oneself into accord
with Allah Taalas will.
Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh (Radiallahu
Taala Anh) states, The heart of the hungry
is sharper and his instinct healthier and more
purified than those of others, especially
one who does not drink much water and
cleanses the lower self with the help of
spiritual endeavour. A hungry mans body is
modest and heart humble and Allah fearing.
Hunger kills the power of desiresHazrat
Sufyaan Thauri (Radiallahu Taala Anh) said,
The fasting person who slanders others
gets his fast adulterated. Hazrat Shaikh
Abu Talib Makki (Radiallahu Taala Anh) is
of the opinion that Allah Taala has declared
the acts like listening to lies and talking evil,
synonymous and tantamount to eating out of
forbidden as Allah Taala states in the Holy
Quran, They are habitual listeners of lies,
great devourers of the things forbidden. [ S

and to focus our attention on Ibaadat and

Significance of Ramadan
E very year during Ramadaan, the ninth
month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims
fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from
food, drink and marital relations. Fasting
is compulsory on every capable mature
Muslim. Children, the sick, the mentally unfit,
the elderly, menstruating women, pregnant
or breastfeeding women and travellers are
exempt or have special concessions.
In any case, why would any sensible
person voluntarily neglect his needs and
desires, albeit for a limited time, unless
there was something more desirable to be
profited thereby? Fasting is no exception to
this rationale, and here, it is their Creators
pleasure and His reward that the devout hope
to attain.
Ramadaan coincides with the revelation of
Islams holy book, the Quraan, 1400 years
ago. The Quraan itself asserts that it is the
inimitable speech of God and it remains
in its original Arabic language to this day,
memorized by millions of Muslims. The
Quraans theme, which it states to be the
actual purpose of life, is tawheed Gods
unique oneness and His sole right to be
worshipped and unconditionally obeyed. The
scholar Ibn-ul-Qayyim noted that every part
of this scripture is found to be talking either
about tawheed and its opposite, associating
partners with God or about the reward of true
monotheists and the outcome of those who
worshipped others besides God.
Fasting is a special worship which trains
the believer to develop God-consciousness
and exercise self-restraint. According to the
Quranic narrative, no original sin is inherited
by humans from which there is no hope of
deliverance until someone else is made to
suffer and atone for it. Rather, each persons
deeds are the result of his own God-given
choices. Accordingly, salvation lies in ones
own responsibility to restrain the ego from
vice as much as possible and in sincere
repentance to the All-Merciful Creator for
any lapses. In this regard, fasting has indeed
been observed to have an amazing effect in
protecting the heart, tongue and limbs from
immorality and sin.
Fasting nurtures patience and serves as
a spiritual purification. Fasting is not merely
abandoning food and drink, said the Prophet,
peace be upon him. It is abandoning vain
and indecent speech. Do not spoil your fast
by abusing anyone. If anyone insults you, say:
I am fasting. If you were standing, sit down.
Fasting teaches empathy; when a person
feels hunger for a while, he becomes sensitive
towards the less fortunate who are in this
situation more often.
Above all, fasting embodies the very
foundation of Islam, tawheed. Without true
realization of this central tenet, other aspects
of Islam remain hazy at best. Fasting demands
absolute sincerity; this is one worship where
hypocrisy and showing-off cannot exist. As the
scholar Ibn Rajab observed: When the egos
craving for its desires becomes most intense
in a place unobserved by human eyes, yet it
foregoes them willingly for its Creators sake,
what else does this demonstrate except proof
of ones faith and sincerity to God?

by Allah the almighty. It is a time for extra worship and reflection and
brotherhood if we observe fasting with sincerity and dedication it will
install discipline and steadfastness keeping us on the straight path for
the next 12 months. May Allah almighty accept our fasts for all the good
deeds, May he bless us with peace and prosperity and a model society
living in harmony with each other
Then at the completion of Ramadhan on the day of Eid ,Muslims
celebrate with the Eid ul Fitr prayers , a special day for all to enjoy.

FTA talks must continue

A ll the signs are there that the Free Trade Agreement negotiations are firmly back on
the table, with renewed enthusiasm and energy.

In pursuit of Happiness..
I n todays time and age when we rush about
trying to get and keep our lives together
and any free time whatsoever is dedicated to
Facebook or Twitter or our choice of social
media, we seem to forget to check in with
ourselves regularly. Check in if the life we have
chosen for ourselves is infact making us Happy?
Why would we want to do this you might ask?
Well didnt you learn growing up that the goal
for all human existance is happiness? And
really is that not what seems to be the purpose
of whatever we do anyways?
Having said that, I was asked this question
a few years ago about what happiness meant to
me. At that time I was a size 22 and naturally
being me that was the first thing that came to
mind. On further examination I responded by
saying that if I were a size 12, had a hunk of a
man, be terribly rich and famous all in all had
a successful problemfree life, I would perhaps
be happy.
To my amazement the person asking the
question told me the story of Cleopatra, who
inspite of her unprecedented beauty and
unparalleled authority and wealth, had no
choice but to take her own life in the end.
Well, it so happens that there are countless
other such examples in history. So that really
means that just because you maybe extremely
rich, or beautiful or have the perfect partner
does not guarantee happiness.
We look at beautiful women who have rich
partners but constantly fight with each other.
We can meet extremely successful career
women whose children have ended up being on

T he Hindu code of conduct places primary
emphasis on the two main qualities in a
human being which distinguish him from
animals and lower life characters. They are
Education (Vidya) and proper social and
religious conduct (samskara). Of the two
Education is considered to be more important
because the other samskara does not come
without education.
Funeral or Anthyeshti is the last sacrament
in a persons worldly journey.Although rebirth
is part of Hindus core belief death is generally
considered as an inauspicious or sad occasion.
The general belief is that at the time of death
the soul leaves the body and travels to other
worlds. While the souls of pious people with
good karma go to higher worlds, those with
low merit and bad karma go to the lower
worlds. Funeral rites of Hindus are based on
ancient traditions and established practice
rooted in Hindus core belief.
Cremation is based on the vedic belief that
Agni (The god of fire) receives all offerings
made in a yagna (sacrifice) on behalf of
the gods and that the human body is an
aggregation of the five main elements Pancha
Bhutas(fire, earth, wind,water and space),
triple qualities (gunas) and 24 principles
(tattvas). Cremation is a kind of sacrifice in
which whatever is offered to Agni is shared
by the other gods through Agni. Blessed thus
by the divinities, the sacrifice sanctifies the
offering (the body) made in the cremation

life is change. So even if one maybe happy and
satisfied as a youth, one may become a constant
complainer as one gets older. Someone who was
spending each day with joy can one day change
to a completely different person becoming
ceremony and ensures a place in heaven for the
departed soul. Hindus also believe the body to
be the creation of parakriti or nature that is
made up of the above mentioned elemants,
qualities & principles. When a person dies &
his body is cremated, these constituent parts
return to nature to be recycled and regenerated/
manifested in other forms.
To put it in perspective a Christian or
Muslim feels assured of his place in heaven
after death, regardless of whether he has earned
it / deserves it or not, simply by accepting the
son of god or the messenger of god to be the
only means to heaven.
The way we scatter the ashes of our loved
ones after they are cremated, either helps
them in the afterlife or obstructs their onward
journey. Spiritual research conducted has
shown that immersing ashes in water alone
can benefit our ancestors. This article also
provides information on the reasons behind
the spiritually correct methods to be adopted
right from the collection of ashes to its final
disposal.
Nowadays there is an increasing trend of
people choosing cremation over burial as a
funeral rite. The funeral rite of cremation
that takes place either on a funeral pyre or in
a crematorium does not dispose off the body
totally. The remnants (ashes) are handed back
to the family in an pot or urn. The entire process
from receiving the ashes to the scattering of
the ashes is important from a spiritual point of
insane with anger and
wander about in the
darkness of suffering.
So what then is
happiness??
A definition of
happiness states that
Happiness is a mental
or emotional state of
well-being characterized
by positive or pleasant
emotions ranging from
contentment to intense
joy.
Happiness it seems
is of such fundamental
importance to the human
condition that life,
liberty and the pursuit
of happiness were
deemed to be unalienable
rights by the United
States Declaration of
Independence.
The United Nations
declared 20 March as
the International Day of
Happiness to recognise
the relevance of happiness
and wellbeing as universal goals.
There seem to be several definitions and
approaches to this simple question of What
is happiness? From my own experience as
a student of the philosophy of life and the
Buddhist approach to life it was interesting
view. Depending on the process adopted, we
can either help our departed loved one to move
on in their afterlife or we may be instrumental
in their remaining earthbound. However the
surviving relatives who receive the ashes in
a cremation urn are generally unaware of the
spiritually correct way of scattering the ashes.
We know that we can medically identify a
decomposed body that is beyond recognition
by techniques such as DNA testing etc.
because even a small remnant of a tooth or hair
matches exactly to the person. Similarly at a
subtler, intangible level the smallest remnant
of the corpse, even in the ashes has the same
frequencies and vibrations as the person.
These frequencies are generally negative in
nature. Given that in general a majority of us
are not spiritually oriented, let alone spiritually
evolved, it would be fair to say that 50% of the
population is below 30% spiritual level, the
frequencies emanating from the body are the
subtle basic Raja-Tama frequencies. Also as
100% of the population (regardless of whether
they are Hindu or otherwise) is affected by
negative energies (also commonly referred
to as Devil, Ghost etc.) the frequencies
emanating from the body and ashes are of the
Tama variety. As a result, they are distressing
to us at a subtle level.
There is also a subtle bond that exists
between the ashes and the departed ancestor
because of the similar frequencies. These
negative frequencies and subtle bond can

to note that most schools of thought describe
happiness as not a life without problems, but
rather the strength to overcome the problems
that come our way. It seems that there is no
such thing as a problem-free life; difficulties
are unavoidable. But how we experience and
react to our problems is what determines our
happiness. Happiness is to be found in the
dynamism and energy of our own life as we
struggle to overcome one obstacle after another.
A beautiful analogy that I read states that the
challenges we face in life can be compared to a
tall mountain, rising before a mountain climber.
For someone who has not trained properly,
whose muscles and reflexes are weak and slow,
every inch of the climb will be filled with terror
and pain. The exact same climb, however,
will be a thrilling journey for someone who
is prepared, whose legs and arms have been
strengthened by constant training. With each
step forward and up, beautiful new views will
come into sight.
Research now shows us that we can train our
minds to be happy. There are many roads that
lead to this most sought after land of happiness.

subtle body. This enables them to trouble the
subtle body or make it do many undesirable
acts as per their bidding (referred to generally
as possessed).
As water is all-assimilating, it imbibes
the distressing vibrations remaining from the
dead body in the ashes and the other related to
the subtle body like Absolute Earth (Pruthv),
Fire (Tj), Air (Vyu) element etc. This helps
to break the remaining attachment of the
subtle body to its gross body (sthladha) on
the Earth region (Bhlok). As a result, the
probability of the subtle body getting stuck
in the Earth region as well as that of being
attacked by ghosts is dramatically reduced.
Sea water is the best for disposal of ashes.
This is because sea water has the maximum
all-assimilating property among all types of
waters. Amongst other waters, holy rivers are
the best. Holy rivers are those rivers whose
waters have a very high content of subtle basic
Sattva component. For example, in rivers like
the Ganges in India the subtle basic Sattva
component is high despite the water being
heavily polluted. In general, flowing water is
the best as it scatters the ashes thus making it
near impossible for the ghosts to gain control
on the subtle body through the ashes.

Government will focus on Rail budget focusses on transparency, safety: Modi
C alling the railways an engine of development,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the
railway budget unveiled this week had its focus
on transparency and passenger safety.
The Rs.149,176 crore budget presented
in the Lok Sabha focussed on transparency
and integrity as well as the safety needs of
commuters, Modi said in remarks later.
The budget keeps in mind the development
of India. We can see the great use of technology
also, he said.
This budget shows where we want to take
the railways and at the same time where we want
to take India through the railways, the prime
minister said.
The budget introduces the countrys first bullet
train, to ply between Mumbai and Ahmedabad,
and increase the speed of passenger trains up to
200 km an hour on select routes.
The budget strengthens institutionalized
mechanism in the Indian Railway network,
which carries 23 million passengers every day.
This years budget plan is the higest ever plan
outlay of Rs 65,455 crore. The following are the
main highlights of the railway budget:
Congress may move court if
denied opposition leader status
T he Congress is considering the option of
going to court if its leader in the Lok Sabha is
not recogised as leader of opposition in the house,
party sources said.
Knocking the courts door is one of the
options, but we will wait and watch for now,
said a Congress leader who did not wish to be
named. The source, however, added that the issue
was being discussed in the party fora and a final
decision has not been taken.
The Congress, with 44 members, is the second
largest party in the Lok Sabha. However, it falls
short of the 10 percent mark -- 55 members in the
545-member house -- which the ruling Bharatiya
Janata Party has cited as mandatory as per rules
for getting the leader of opposition status to its
leader in the house.
Congress leaders have said that their leader
in Lok Sabha should be recognised as the leader

A court in New Delhi has issued summons to
Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her
son and party vice president Rahul Gandhi on
charges of misappropriating funds of a company
that used to publish the now-defunct National
Herald newspaper.
In response to a private complaint filed by
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian
Swamy, Metropolitan Magistrate Gomati
Manocha said: I have found prima facie evidence
against all the accused.
The court directed them to appear before it

The Congress called it a motivated
complaint. The allegations are baseless, said
party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
A party statement added: All the people
named in the National Herald matter will seek
legal advice and do the needful.
Apart from the Gandhis, the court also
summoned Congress leaders Motilal Vora and
Oscar Fernandes, Sam Pitroda, who was an
advisor to former prime minister Manmohan
Singh, and former journalist Suman Dubey, who
is close to the Gandhi family.

they shall be at liberty to refute the allegations of

The judge, however, added that the
complainant had established a prime facie case of
dishonest misappropriation of property, criminal
breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

He said intrusion of privacy of individuals and
institutions was highly objectionable.
We have already communicated to the
government of the United States. We have
said that we have seen reports in the US media
regarding authorisation given to entities of the
US government to intrude upon the privacy of
communications of the Indian government, its
citizens and Indian entities. If such intrusions
have indeed been authorised and have taken place,
these are highly objectionable, Akbaruddin said.
According to a report in the Washington Post,
India was among 193 countries concerning
whom the NSA has been authorised to intercept
information by the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court.
The NSA exempted only four countries -
Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand - in
a group known collectively with the US as the
Five Eyes from such surveillance, the newspaper
reported.
The US has had broad no-spying arrangements
with these four countries, the Post said, citing
a new set of top secret documents leaked by
Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor-
turned-whistleblower who has been given asylum
in Russia.

treatment and arrest of Indian diplomat Devyani
Khobragade in New York in December.
The row also comes ahead of Prime Minister
Modis expected meeting with US President

2,200 Indians to return from Iraq
N early 2,200 Indians in Iraqs non-conflict
areas wish to return home, with 117 of
them set to reach the capital after midnight on
June 6.
The external affairs ministry said the
government was buying tickets for some 1,600
of the 2,200 while the air fare for the other 600
were being paid by the companies in Iraq they
worked for.
The announcement comes a day after 46
nurses from Kerala seized and freed by Sunni
insurgents who have overrun vast areas in Iraq
flew back to Kochi to a grand welcome.
The Saturday Air India flight later went to
Hyderabad where 52 nurses from Telangana
and 24 from Andhra Pradesh got off. Another
15 Gujaratis on the plane then flew to New
Delhi before taking a flight to Mumbai.

that there is a sense of urgency about how we
move forward from here.
In terms of trade, Fiji firmly believes that
in order for re-engagement to be meaningful, it
should not just be willingness on the part of the
Fijian Government and Fijian industries.
But the New Zealand Government must also
take significant and concrete steps to show their
commitment towards mending relations.
In order to understand the present and talk
about the future, we first have to remember the
past. Since 2007, New Zealands stance towards
Fiji has been counter-productive.

K ohima/Imphal, When you go home, tell
them of us and say that for their tomorrow,
we gave our today..... reads the epitaph at the
Commonwealth War Cemetery in Kohima.
The cemetery has been beautifully laid out with
lush green grass and is meticulously maintained
by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
(CWGC). The picturesque Kohima War
Cemetery, a symbolic memorial commemorating
the memories of the men who sacrificed their lives
during World War II, attracts people visiting the
northeast Indian state.
There is a similar terraced cemetery in Imphal,
with little stone markers indicating the final
resting place of 1,602 soldiers - 138 of them
unidentified - from India, Britain, Canada and
Australia, among other countries, with the names
of 917 Indian soldiers inscribed on a plaque. This
too is maintained by the CWGC.
Seventy years ago, the battles of Imphal and
Kohima halted the Japanese advance into India
at the height of World War-II, claiming tens of
thousands of lives on both sides. A three-month-
long commemoration of the event, to remember
the almost forgotten sacrifice of the fallen, will
conclude Saturday in Imphal in the presence of
envoys from the US, Australia and Japan, among
others.
The battles of Kohima and Imphal (March
8, 1944-July 3, 1944), which marked the climax
of the Japanese forces advance into India,
claimed the lives of 30,000 Japanese, left 23,000
injured and 600 were captured, writer and editor
Rajkumar Kalyanjit Singh told, adding: The
Allies suffered 17,500 casualties.
The fierce gunfights were considered amongst
the bloodiest during Second World War, said
Singh, who edits Manipuri newspaper Marup.
In Moirang, 45 km northeast of Imphal,
there is an INA (Indian National Army) museum
displaying letters, photographs, badges of rank
and other articles associated with the force. The
INA flag was first hoisted on Indian soil on April
14, 1944.

Manipur and Nagaland, Datta added.

M any a times I wondered, as a theatre student

and enthusiast, as to whether William
Shakespeare would have that dilemma?
He expressed many human emotions very
well in his plays, very ably and profoundly, but
the dilemma of buying a section and building a
house? And if he would have come across such an
issue, would he have written a comedy, tragedy or
something which had mystery, comedy, tragedy,
laughs and tears all intermingled, albeit in that
mix, there would have to be lawyers.
Well, this is the issue a much lesser human
being, a friend of mine and his family are currently
facing. They are spending practically all their
available day time in their holidays in house
hunting to make it their first home.
Now, the learned readers will say that Oh,
so what is new in that? We all have either gone
through this or are going to go through this.
There are people who would not even think of
buying a house as either their home is where the
heart is or they just dont care, because of the
hassles involved.
As a small time lawyer, when one looks at the
real issues (after observing the life around us for
such a long time as a normal human being), one
realises how much ignorance and misinformation
prevails in the field. Therefore, though many
more able hands have written reams of paper (and
now web-space/bytes/data) about all these things
before and yet many more are going to do that
after me as well, yours faithfully is going to be
looking at some of the aspects of the proverbial
Bread, Clothes and Housing or Roti,
KapdaAurMakan as known in Hindi.
So, based on my interactions with my friend
and his wife mainly, as two sons are quietly doing
their studies and are not much concerned as such

being curious and supportive of their parents,
I have come across a few things which I shall
discuss. Beforehand, I must warn those who are
speculators and deal in houses, sections and
other properties as if they are hot cakes, please
be-aware that this article/discussion is primarily

who sometimes have it as a big item in their
bucket-lists of life or just want to do something
for the future of our kids, and is not meant for
the consumption of speculators or gamblers in
property business.
The first thing is whether one needs to rent
or to buy. Now this is a very tricky question for
someif one is living in a city like Auckland. If one
looks objectively, one can safely conclude that
vis--vis the amount of rent one is paying, the

argument and whether it was much thought about,
I asked in return, so which areas you would
be looking at to have a house, how far they are,
what about commuting, how much deposit, how
many years till that house become your house
instead of Banks (Financial Institutions House)
etc. Then, he paused, gave me some answers, but
started re-thinking. One of the issues which he
is facing is he is not getting something which he
would love to have in the proper rangeas that
will again be very subjective. So cut your coat
according to cloth will either make a coat which
does not fit properly or sometimes someone may
ask, was it meant to be a coat?
Point is, that everyone craves for settlement
and security, but is it worth the costs involved?
May be, may be not which entirely depends
on many factors, which, if they gel well, will be
resulting in happier outcomes but when they go
wrong, the people involved go through some of
the most traumatic times of their lives.
Making a home out of house is secondary
thing, first thing is to have a house.
The first and the foremost common sense
advice, which you all would be knowing very
well, is - check your own needs and urges.
What are you doing it for? Ask that question
and discuss the possible answers. Because X has
purchased a house and so I being Y shall purchase
it as we belong to the same class in the society?
Or my better half (either can say that to the other)
is now pushing for our own home as everyone
who came around our time from India has it now.
Here though, in New Zealand, those things do
not matter much but in India, as a lawyer and as
a theatre-person, I have seen a lot of people doing
it over and over again in almost all aspects of life,
buying a new car as someone close had bought
one. Which is okay if it works well for you, but
do you really need to have a big mortgage, then
a job security and so many things because of all
these things?

Unique study into Asian nutrition in New Zealand
M any Asian New Zealanders are more likely
to change their diet, the longer they live
here, according to a new study.
The study looking at the similarities and
differences in diet, nutrition and health for Asian
subgroups in New Zealand used data from the
2008/09 Adult National Nutrition Survey.
The results suggest that the longer some
Asians live in New Zealand, the more likely they
are to adopt some features of a European diet.
This was more so for South Asians in contrast
to East and South East Asians (ESEA).
About 10 per cent of participants in the
Adult National Nutrition survey identified with
Asian ethnicity and this was comparable to the
percentage in the New Zealand population. The
majority of these people were migrants who had
lived in New Zealand for less than 10 years.
They were divided into sub-groups; South
Asians, (people who identified as Indian,
Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Pakistani, Fiji Indian,
Afghani and Sri Lankan); or East and South
East Asian (people who identified as Chinese,
Malaysian, Taiwanese, Filipino, Cambodian,
Vietnamese, Burmese, Indonesian, Thai,
Japanese, Korean and Tibetan).
New Zealand European and Others (NZEO)
included all other ethnicities such as Latin
American and African.
The analysis for Asian participants was done
by Dr Sherly Parackal from the University of
Aucklands School of Population Health, (in
collaboration with researchers Dr Claire Smith
and Associate Professor Winsome Parnell,
from the Department of Human Nutrition at the
University of Otago).

groups and provides new information on their
similarities and differences in dietary intakes and
health outcomes.
The study found there were significant
differences between the Asian sub-groups
regarding the dietary guidelines for fruit and
vegetables, bread, milk and meat consumption.
A different dietary profile was evident for
the Asian sub-groups with higher percent energy
from carbohydrate than NZEO, due to their
predominantly carbohydrate based diets, she
says.
A unique aspect of the South Asian sub-
group was that in contrast to ESEA, they reported
consuming lower amounts of meat, poultry
and processed meats than NZEO, she says. It
followed that South Asians also had lower intakes
of fat, protein (among females), and saturated fats
and cholesterol (among males).
Vitamins and minerals such as retinol, niacin,
vitamin B12 and zinc were also lower among
South Asian females. Given the high percentage
of South Asians reporting that they never eat
red meat or chicken, it is not surprising that
biochemical indices of iron status were lower for
this group, says Dr Parackal.
She says that although some differences were
not of statistical significance due to the small
sample sizes, the strong prevalence of diagnosed
diabetes among South Asians (12 percent)
in comparison to the other study participants

and emphasises the need to acknowledge these
differences in future diet and disease-related
research, she says.
Future national surveys should include an
adequate sample of Asian sub-groups so that
researchers can draw comparisons and make
recommendations for the public health status of
these groups.

F ilmmaker Anurag Kashyap loves to put
societys underbelly under a scanner and his
films like Black Friday, Dev D and Gangs
Of Wasseypur are a case in point. Now he has
come up with another dark drama Ugly, saying
he delves into such themes because he believes in
showing real things.
I think theres a certain honesty and truth in
dark themes. Rest everything else is a camouflage
- like they decorate a cake with icing. I believe in
real, and thats what I show, Kashyap told during
a tete-?-tete.
Thats precisely what he does in Ugly, which
had its Asia premiere at the recently concluded
third edition of the Ladakh International Film
Festival (LIFF) in this Jammu and Kashmir
region and was well-received.
He put together Ugly after coming across
multiple true-life stories during his research.
Ugly, which was initially screened at the
Cannes International Film Festival earlier this
year, is set for a Sep 19 release.
Meanwhile, the moviemakers Yudh, his redefining things and doing things himself...its
ambitious TV project, which is 71-year-old

fiction show for the small screen, is ready to go on
air. He says that there are many factors about the
show that excite him.

Charandas Chor- The Honest Thief, A rib-tickling and a heart- B-Town

Habib Tanveer is a Rajasthani folktale originally
envisioned by Vijaydan Detha.
The play which brought laurels to Prayas in
Thashika Thangamma the year 2005, was directed by Amit Ohdedar and
Padma Akula assisted in the directing the play

of their much appreciated heart-warming play,
Charandas Chor. This famous play of playwright

In the 2005 production when the entire crew
was small and intimate I was the assistant director,
choreography, a dancer, makeup and wardrobe and
also played a role. After nearly 10 years, in 2014,
I am the assistant director, makeup and wardrobe.
A full circle. This play for me is indeed special

play.
The confident energy of the cast that blended
well with their antics and reactions to the
consequent occurrence complimented the narrative
of the play. Bhavna Chahal, who played the role of
Kalavati, a regal queen, who had a very impulsive
