Response Paper #8

In Alma 19, Abish and the queen were able to help an entire people because they

understood the culture of the times. Abish understood that she could not start preaching because

if she did people would be offended and not open to the guidance of the Spirit. Instead she did

the only culturally acceptable thing she could do, attend to her mistress, who, as the queen,

would have more power to do things. The queen, too, understood that the people would be more

open to listening to their king than their queen.

In Female Identity Questions, DEvegnee acknowledges the seemingly opposite

expectations for women to be either mothers or Superwomen. DEvegnee asserts that these

two roles are not necessarily mutually exclusive, although the media and society make it seem

that way.
