Time for the Big Top

On the last weekend in May, Damian

Syre brought his Circus Royales 46 year
anniversary tour to Newman. Three shows
were preformed over only two days. The
two hour show was filled with joy, humour
and thrills.

The circus included an aerial acrobat

spinning and flying through the air and
without a net underneath. It gave you
chills to watch but you simply could not
look away. Contortionist, Susana, was
unbelievable with her ability to bend in
ways that did not seem possible whilst
balancing on one hand and shooting an
arrow with her feet over her head. Later
in the show, Susana joined the magic act
with Damian Syre, which left some minds
boggled as to how she contorted her body
in a see through box trick.

Of course who does not like a clown act yourself holding your breath, it was a great

USA BJJ Tour
Long time Newman residents, Adam
and Dee Miles-Woodland and their two
children, Lilly and Kobe are hitting pause
on life as they know it to take up a six month
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) training holiday in
America.
The family has been training BJJ collectively
since 2012. The Adams enthusiasm came
in 2008 when he saw a group of men
training at Boomerang Oval, he joined in
and the rest as they say is history. Adam
would travel to Perth on his rostered days
off once a month for two years to continue
training after the Blackbelt left town.
After being promoted to a Blue belt Adam
decided to begin his own club in town,
his own back patio to be more precise.

The club that Adam and Dee began has
now grown and relocated to their own
training studio off Les Tutt Drive. The
family are now only a month out from
their adventure and the reality of leaving
their comfort zone, not to mention the
additional challenge of commencing home
schooling the children, is dawning on
them. However, the excitement of being

memories they will make as a family along

Walk for a Cause
On Mothers Day over 100 partipants
registered for the Shire of East Pilbaras
Mothers Day Classic (MDC). Teams and
individuals walked 4km around South
Newman, leaving from and returning to the
Recreation Centre.
This was the first time The Mothers Day
Classic was held in Newman, but the MDC
itself is an annual event raising funds and
awareness for breast cancer research
through fun and frivolity. It is estimated
that this year breast cancer will become
the most commonly diagnosed cancer in
Australia and the fourth most common
cause of cancer death, affecting 1 in 8
people and is not only a disease for women
but men too.

The ladies from the Recreation Centre got
everyones heart pumping by putting the
room through a warm up prior to setting
off on the walk, leaving the Rec Centre
heading right towards Welsh Drive, down
Forrest Avenue and then back up Fortescue
Avenue where the group returned to the
Recreation Centre to sit down and enjoy
a light brunch and cupcakes generously
supplied by Willemina. With the donations
taken on the morning going towards the
total money raised for the event.
The winner of the best team prize went
to Chesticle Champs and best dressed
individual/family went to Jodi Quince
with daughter Lauryn and friend, Sophie
Alloway. Newmans event raised $571
from the morning tea along with 115
registrations going directly towards the
cause.
The Shire of East Pilbara is promoting
health and wellness in the community with
events such as this and the triathlon. The

Saints held a Sports Pro Gender Switch night

Act for Peace

Today, there are more refugees, asylum
seekers and displaced people worldwide
than at any time since World War II. That is
more than 65 million people forced to flee
their homes to escape conflict and disaster.
Four Newman women are undertaking
the Act for Peace Ration Challenge. Katie
Pennington, Maria Cournane, Irene
Schmultz and Zan King will be eating the
same food rations as a Syrian refugee to
raise money and awareness for refugees
who have lost everything.

The Ration Challenge is organised by Act
for Peace who is the international aid
agency of the National Council of Churches
in Australia. The money raised will provide
urgently needed food rations, healthcare
and shelter for refugees. Together with your
support, money raised will also be providing
education and livelihoods so refugees can
start to rebuild their lives. You are still

Red Dust Dreams
Author Lannah Sawers-Diggins will be
visiting Newman in late June to interview
some local characters from the community
for her next project, a documentary based
on her book Red Dust Dreams.
Red Dust Dreams has just become
an award winning finalist in the Non-
Fiction: Narrative category in the 2017
International Book Awards. The nomination
was a pleasant surprise to Lannah, and due
to this newfound fame she is now in high
demand to attend talks around the country
including the Mt Magnet Astro Rocks
Festival.
Lannah and her production team are
planning to visit numerous outback towns
throughout WA, NT, QLD and SA. The idea
behind the tour is to raise the profile of the
people and places of the outback to help

BMX North West Super
Series Round 1
It was the day before Mothers Day and
while some mothers might have began
their celebratory relaxing weekend leading
up to the second Sunday in May, the
mothers of East Pilbara BMX members
were down track side for the first round of

Almost 230 competitors registered for the
event, with 210 riders consisting of local
and visiting riders participating on the day.
Competitors ranged in age from two year
old Mini Wheelers through to Pro-Open
Men and Women classes racing for the
prize money and riding for points towards
the overall North West competition.

The North West Super Series consists of

four rounds throughout the Pilbara, with
Newman was represented by over 70 riders
participating on the day throughout the 23
classes. 40% of the local riders finished in
the top five on the day, with three more
