During my first year as an educator, here are some challenges that I faced while I am on my station:
Lack of Learning materials/Textbooks
The unavailability of learning materials is just one of the problems still
hounding the countrys new basic education program, K to 12. Under the K to 12 program, every graduate is expected to be equipped with information, media and technology skill; learning and innovation skills; effective communication skills; and life and career skills. A classroom of 40-plus students without books is hardly a learning environment. Many teachers, especially in urban schools, are working with at-risk students with very few of the necessary resources to support them. I teach Mathematics and Araling Panlipunan subjects and every time we had a discussion, we refer only to the available books/learning modules in our school. During examination, I was also only allowed a certain number of photocopies. If I ran out of copies, I had to pay for more. I would play math games in my head: If I made the font smaller and reduced the spacing and margins, I could reduce the amount of copies per child to two pages instead. No teacher should have to worry about not being able to provide the most basic resources for their students. However, I do believe that increased funding for high-quality resources, and continued teacher development would absolutely improve urban education. As an educator, we need to ensure that the level of competency of our students match those prescribed in the curriculum. We are also given a free hand to implement out-of-the-box strategies to convey the lesson to our students. Teachers are also flexible, if there are no available resources, we need to sacrifice a little amount of our salary just to provide students with relevant and applicable learning materials to cater their needs.
