Dear Rep.,

On behalf of Caregiver Action Network (CAN), I am writing regarding the safety and security of our nation's
medicines.

CAN is the nations leading non-profit family caregiver organization, working to improve the quality of life for
the 90 million Americans who care for loved ones with chronic conditions, disabilities, disease, or the frailties
of old age. CAN serves a broad spectrum of family caregivers ranging from the parents of children with
special needs, to the families and friends of wounded soldiers; from a young couple dealing with a diagnosis
of MS, to adult children caring for parents with Alzheimers disease. CAN (the National Family Caregivers
Association) is a non-profit organization providing education, peer support, and resources to family
caregivers across the country free of charge. On average:
Family caregivers spend 23 hours a week managing the health care needs of their loved ones.
70% of family caregivers report that medication management is a part of this effort.
The value of the services family caregivers provide for "free" is estimated to be $522 billion a year.
Family caregivers spend up to $10,000 per year out of pocket caregiving expenses.

We have deep concerns about an amendment which is to come before the Committee regarding drug
importation. We are also concerned about any provisions allowing importation or prescription drugs into the
United States. The safety of those we care for will always be the highest concern of family caregivers. We
urge to reject any proposals to allow drug importation that could jeopardize drug safety.

Right now there is no guarantee that imported drugs are safe and effective. Even some drugs from Canada
have been found to be produced in India or other countries and have been found to be impure. Former FDA
officials and former Canadian health officials have stated why drug importation would be dangerous to the
United States.

We strongly urge you to oppose the drug importation amendment.

Sincerely,

John Schall
