DirectorO: Perhaps, look into setting up two intercept missions; one through our
Triton agents and another via our Black Ops operatives in Jakarta. I will initiate the
operation proposal. Get me the cost estimates and on what time table we can
mobilize our Indonesian people. One way or another Proteus must acquire this.

Re: Cancerous Outbreak in Jakarta

Sir,

I have completed my investigation of the sudden rise in aberrant cellular expression in


the homeless population of Jakarta. It does not appear to be related to a spill or
environmental accident. Though the number of cases are too numerous to be an
anomalous occurrence. Rather, my investigation confirms that some sort of human
experiment is being conducted on the local population. The primary suspect is Lung
Tien Biotics. Their environmental and human rights history is appalling. As well as a
few contacts were willing to divulge that LTB has spent a large amount of money to
help clean-up the flood and storm areas with the understanding that no questions
would be asked. Of course none of this can be proved, it is all anecdotal evidence.

I have attached a report relating to two similar outbreaks last year, as well as some
communications I have had regarding the principal players in the area. I hope that this
helps the Director to make the right decision. We have to get some troubleshooters out
here ASAP, and we need to shut this operation down.

I found a couple things of interest. It appears that LTB remodeled two of


their subbasement facilities March of 07. Silo-10 and Silo-09, cost LTB
around $42.3 Million in US dollars. I could not find a Build Of Materials
List, but I know they contracted out to DeVries for some security
specialist (I will try to find out who). They also made a large purchase
with GeoMantic an Indian corporation that specializes in robotics and
security solutions.

Whatever LTB is doing there, its big, its expensive and they dont want
ANYONE to know about it.

Sir,

Traditional Biohazard protocols will not suffice we will have to implement


level three protocols and a few unorthodox additional layers of protection. I
have attached a few vendor solutions. Of course THEY do not know why we
want these tools.

As per your request I have summarized our Outbreak Containment Policy.

The following tiered response is suggested:


Combustible Gas ~est. 5min. max deployment
Ignition system ~est. 0.1 seconds to trigger with
~3 second burn time
Vacuum Pumps ~est. 5min. max evacuation time
Concussion Ring ~est. 0.5 seconds to trigger.

SUMMARY:
Once a containment alert is triggered, 5 minutes are needed to
ascertain the actual threat. During this period automatic precautions
would be active to mitigate the spread of the threat.

If a Threat is confirmed, it will take 5 minutes period to mobilize


physical security from Silo-09 to Silo-10 (with additional drilling we
might be able to reduce that to 3 minutes).

Silo-10 containment and locked-down begins. During the next 5


minutes project critical assets are evacuated (if the level of the Threat
permits), a 5 minute counter is planned.

Decontamination Level One, via a non-breathable alkaline combustible


gas would then be distributed via the air ducts into the facility.
Hopefully this would be sufficient to destroy any airborne vectors and
incapacitate any infected personnel/subjects.

If Decon-1 appears to fail, we would then trigger the ignition system
and burn out any remaining threat vectors. Upon burn time completion
(estimated 3-5 second burn time), vacuum pumps would activate
clearing out the smoke and carbon monoxide.

If Decon-02 fails, and the vacuum seems ineffective, Security Command


can determine if we must trigger Decon-3 and destroy the remaining
facility for liability and containment concerns.

Welcome to the world of Aberrant, its the year 2008 and the golden age of the nova is beginning its end.
The world is divided between those who have embraced the new evolution of humanity and those that deny
its inevitable drive.

What You Need


You will need the Aberrant Core Rulebook and some ten-sided dice. Having Aberrant: Year One and the
fan created e-book Aberrant: Forceful Personalities will be invaluable too. Otherwise this adventure has
everything you will need to run the game.

Synopsis
On the surface Outbreak is a pretty straight forward mission. Get in, grab the evidence, get out, and get
your reward. But nothing is so simple in the Aberrant world.

The data involved revolves around recombinant transgenic DNA (rtDNA) sequencing, a form of research
restricted by Project Utopia. According to recent rumors the project was a success. The scientists at the
facility successfully created a new virus that could remove specific sequences of target DNA and replace it
with preprogrammed DNA sequences in embryonic material. The successful deployment of this meta-virus
would alter the genetics of baseline humans to create super-soldiers.

Lung Tien Biotics (LTB) has been working on unlocking the genetic secrets of eruption. Using research
stolen from the now famous Dr. Mazarin, as well as the nova genius of Dr. Sung Lin, the scientists of LTB
have taken the work to its next level, that of practical application. Before they could create test-tube novas,
they needed the tools and mechanism to make the changes. Their efforts to make these tools led the
scientists down the path of transgenic manipulation the introduction of genetic traits of one species into
another.

The LTB research team has not yet succeeded in encoding the M-R Node DNA sequences (Doctor Sun Lin
had her doubts about the latest approach), but their meta-virus was fully functional and more efficient than
they had ever hoped. Project Proteus would love to get their hands on this meta-virus. It could grant Proteus
baseline agents a needed edge in the field. Because of this researchs significance, Project Proteus is pulling
quite a few strings to make this go their way.

Unfortunately for LTB one of their lead scientists had a secret - he was a Nakato Yakuza mole. Three months
before the adventure begins, he is discovered, and is forced to volunteer for a high risk experiment for
directed transgenic-eruption, via a new strain of the meta-virus. The experiment failed, but erupt the spy did,
into a horrendous mutant nova. His violent escape into the surrounding tunnels exposed the facilitys
subterranean location, as well as alerting Utopian agents and Teragen sympathizers in the region. Over the
course of the next three months, two Proteus teams failed to return from their recon missions. Yesterday,
LTB suffered an event in Silo-10. Both Silo 9 and 10 are in lock-down, cut off from the rest of the Lung
Tien Biotics Research Complex and the outside world. A Sanitization and Extraction operation is pending.

In addition to this equipment, Hung will volunteer Walter Han

drive them to the sewer entrance. He will also indicate that the

maps are provided at the back of this book, the Storytellers
map is included in the scene called, Belly of the Beast. More
detailed sewer maps will not be available, as the municipality
of Jakarta has never registered it last two redesigns of its waste
management system in the last fifty years, rather it was not
until the 1990s, when revitalization of Jakarta allowed for the
construction of a modern sewage plant where formal plans
were submitted, these did not include the old archaic systems.

The worst that can go wrong is that the players refuse to take
the mission. If this happens Hung will attempt to convince the
characters to take the mission. If this fails, Hung will take a
different tact; he will stare at the team coldly, pull a micro-
transceiver form his pocket, and speak clearly into it, This is

leverage by holding their hostage, the Storyteller should kill the
hostage, as threatened. Remember to emphasize to the traitor-
player that the device could be a listening device, as that should
put a damper on his desire to spill his guts.

Places of Interest
Old Batavia In a park behind the Fatahillah museum is the resting place of Old Batavia huge cannon
a part of the ruins of an ancient Portuguese fortification. Under the barrel of the cannon is an inscription which
translates to, I am reborn outside of me and on the other side of the Cannons foundations is the depiction of a
fist with the thumb peeking out from between the index and middle fingers. In old times this represented
invulnerability, but today it has the meaning of fertility among Indonesians. The Java government has roped
off the sign, because many Indonesian women who wish to become pregnant often want to rub their bellies
against the sign to help promote their fertility. Also during the weekend many couples can be found sitting atop
the old cannon.

Fatahillah Museum Also known as the Jakarta History Museum, was an 18th century Dutch Courthouse
and City Hall, it is currently one of the most beautiful colonial buildings in Old Jakarta. Though palatial in
design and form, it is also packed full of old paintings, and ceramics from the Dutch occupation.

Rangunan Zoo This 140 hectare zoo established in 1864, contains numerous indigenous species as well
as a fascinating exhibit of the Sumatran Rhinoceros one of the smallest rhinos found in the world. In addition to
the special exhibits Rangunan Zoo offers a fairly exhaustive exhibit of the birds of the world with over 3,122
birds. These exhibits also serve the zoo in aiding of propagation of endangered avians. Special attractions
include a Childrens Zoo, elephant, pony, cart and boat rides.

This adventure module was a work of love, as the original premise was to bundle up a few adventures our
group had so others could use or steal from our experiences. It turned into a rather long trial of wills and sweat,
but here it is (can you imagine it only took me an hour or so to write this up in my notebook). This adventure
was seeded by material found in the Aberrant: Year One book as well as references found in the Aberrant:
Players Guide. I wanted to challenge my players with an adventure that would show them how the baselines
could become a threat to nova-kind.

Admittedly this is a rather linear adventure, but it was like this intentionally. I was still breaking my
players in and showing them various facets of the system. This adventure looks at Perceptive and Barrier rules,
as well as exposing the team to a piece of Indonesia. The Advert included was presented to them as if it was
from the Java Department of Tourism, and was a nice counter point to the Year One write-up, which paints the
city of Jakarta rather darkly and realistically. This was one of the themes I was focusing on at the time, the
effects of encouraging a broadly stratified culture, where the middle class is non-existent. This furthered
mirrored current state of Nova relations, where Novas and baselines sit on opposite ends of the spectrum of
socio-economic power.

Those who looked closely at the above timeline might have noticed that this adventure has the
parenthetical code of JMP:1 This is actually a meaningful code: J signifies that this adventure was made by
me!, M Indicates that this adventure will favor Mega-Mental novas, P indicates that Mega-Physical novas
will also find a chance to shine. The last code NOT used to detail this adventure is the S code which indicates
a Mega-Social focus. Unbeknownst to my players (at least at the time) was that I would systematically rotate my
adventures to support two if the three.

Regardless of everything else, I hope this adventure at least gave an idea or two, and at worst helped someone
hold off complete boredom.
