ABSTRACT : In the current essay the assessment of the bearing capacity of a scheduled
two-storey building in Pindou Street, in the region of Ladadika, Thessaloniki is presented.
The load bearing system of the building is constructed by perimetric masonry and wooden
columns and beams. The roofs skeleton is wooden and covered by tiles. The load bearing
system was modeled by using shell and frame finite elements and the static and dynamic
spectral analysis was performed with the use of program SAP2000. The cross-sections of
the model were checked by using two methods; on the one hand, by considering
simultaneous action of the extreme values (exFi) of the response-spectrum analysis for each
cross sections internal forces and on the other hand, by considering the simultaneous values
of the remaining internal forces that follow the extreme value of each one of them, through
further suitable manipulation (with the use of a spreadsheet program). The results of the
second method were more favorable than the results of the first one, constituting at the same
time a much better approach to the developing internal forces which the building will face in
case of an earthquake.
