Primary Source Analysis

In this document, James Balfour is writing to Lord Rothschild who was a

prominent zionist during this period of time. In his writing, Mr. Balfour is trying to explain

to Lord Rothschild that the Jewish community will be granted a homeland in Palestine.

This posed a huge impact on the Jews because according to their religion, God

promised them that Palestine is their land and that they were to have that land. Because

of what God has promised them, they developed their own group which were called the

Zionists, people who attempted to take their land from the Palestinians. So, because

the British knew of this group they decided to grant the Jews back Palestine under the

British control if they were to help them take it over. The Jews saw this as an

opportunity, in which they would take.

Connection:

The British government view with favor, the establishment in Palestine of a

national home for the Jewish people. The overall message of this document is

summed-up right there, and the significance of it is within the Jewish community. By

this statement I mean that because the British wanted to help the Jews to take over

Palestine, it served a huge importance to the Jewish people. Of course, this document

posed as a threat to the Palestinians but it meant that Jews could be able to receive

their land back. Also, this land was supposedly granted to them by God, so that was

another significant meaning. Therefore, now that the British will help take over the land,

the Zionist movement will be complete.
