Standards

MGSE9-12.G.GMD.1 Give informal arguments for geometric formulas. a. Give informal arguments for the formulas of the
circumference of a circle and area of a circle using dissection arguments and informal limit arguments. b. Give informal
arguments for the formula of the volume of a cylinder, pyramid, and cone using Cavalieris principle

MGSE9-12.G.GMD.2 Give an informal argument using Cavalieris principle for the formulas for the volume of a sphere and
other solid figures. MGSE9-12.G.GMD.3 Use volume formulas for cylinders, pyramids, cones, and spheres to solve
problems.

Higher Order Critical Thinking Skills

The student makes and evaluates decisions using criteria.

The student draws conclusions based upon relevant information while discarding irrelevant information.
Creative Thinking & Creative Problem Solving Skills

The student demonstrates skills in fluency and flexibility to solve problems or create new products.
The student develops original ideas, presentations, or products through synthesis and evaluation.

Essential Question(s)
What should students know when lesson is completed?
Essential Questions
How do I find the volume of composite figures?
Concept(s) to Maintain:
How to compute the volumes of regular 3D figures using the formula V= Bh.
How to compute the volumes of pointy 3D figures using the formula V= 1/3Bh
How to compute the volumes of spheres using the formula V = 4/3 pi r3
Evidence of Learning
What students should know:
Volumes of rectangular prisms, cones, pyramids, and hemispheres
What students should be able to do:
Design 3D composite figures and compute their volume

Teacher Lesson Preparation

Teacher gathers supplies and place them on table
Teacher insures laptops and ipads are charged and ready for use.
Teacher get handouts

Activating Strategy (for example: Hook/Mini-Lesson/Warm-Up/Connection to Prior Learning)

1) Hook: Students will watch the video clip on different types of building in the world and answer the
following questions with their elbow partner?
a) What do you notice in the video?
b) What do you think the video has to do with geometry?
c) What would be a great design for a 21st century building ?

Instructional Sequence and Activities including use of technology

1. Day 1:

a. Notes: Students will take notes on volume and cavalieri principle using a foldable
b. Classwork period: They will design a 21st century building and compute its volume. Students will have
access to ipads, laptops, paper, crayons, colored pencils, glue, tape, scissors and markers.

2. Day 2:

a. Students present their 21st century buildings

b. Classwork period: Handout Students will choose 3 while teacher pick 1. Students will find students
that choose the same problem and link up and discuss their solutions to come up the correct solution
c. Classwork period: Help build a restaurant; students will read the letter and begin their computations

3. Day 3:

a. Students continue to work on the restaurant letter. Students will use the Decision Making Matrix to
determine which location is the best for the restaurant

4. Day 4:

a. Regroup students based on their final decision

b. Students will read their letters to the class
