It gives me immense pleasure to
know that the second edition of HIT
Times is going to be published soon. A
campus tabloid serves as an integral
part of college and university life. It not
only serves to inform college students
about campus happenings, but also
provides a unique perspective on local and global news.
HIT Times, the first ever campus tabloid of Haldia Insti-
tute of Technology is a great effort by a team of talented
enthusiasts to bring across a kaleidoscope of events,
news, stories, memoirs, experts interviews, information
etc. An initiative of this kind will not only entertain but
also satiate the thirst for information among the stu-
dents and the teaching and non-teaching fraternity in

work. To make this dream of The HIT
Times a reality, a journey therefore
started in September 2013. 7 months of
hard work, 7 months of dedication and
the result is in front of us all.
After overcoming the countless
setbacks that came along the way,
Haldia Institute of Technology set its own
record on 11th March 2014 with the in-
auguration of its very own campus tab-
loid, The HIT Times. With this, it became
the 2nd college in the Eastern India and
7th in the entire country to have its own
campus newspaper.

at 5:00 PM at the S.N.Bose auditorium
with a welcome address by THT member

crowd expressing his pride and happiness
over the initiative and encouraging the
idea.
Following that was the showcasing

by Satyaki Kundu, Souradip Sarkar,
Gourab Malakar and Harsh Parekh of 4th
year which described the journey of The
HIT Times from the inception of the idea
to its execution through interesting car-
toons. The applause to this innovative
video was tumultuous. Both the videos
can be found on Youtube on the official
channel The HIT Times.
Souradip Sarkar, one of the two
initiators of THT spoke next about what
the paper meant to the team and what it
would mean to every HITian with its out-
set. The programme concluded with a
vote of thanks by Gourab Malakar who
thanked the college administration for
the support and every person associated
with the making of the paper.
The rest is history; after the distribu-
tion, THT was all everyone talked about.
The HIT Times thus became a reality and
it goes without saying that every HITian
counts for its success. Haldia Institute of
Technology saw a new dawn with it; a
new beginning was paved in the columns
of The HIT Times which brought a splash
of color in every HITians heart. There is
still a long way to travel and lot more to
achieve, and THT with all hope would
witness it in the days to come.

Thoughts behind attending Phire
Dekha 2014: My objective of coming to
this alumni meet is to see my college, my
alma mater as a glorious one. I want
people to recognize the students of HIT
all over the world.
The first thing that comes to your
mind when you hear HIT: My memory
starts from the time I first landed here
and though I am from the small town of
Kharagpur, never in my life did I sit on
the Thela. And they call it a Van here!
One of the key things here that I would
always remember however is the library
being formed from scratch and growing
into what it is right now.
About your life at Haldia: During the
WBJEE counseling that took place in
Shibpur, there was negative campaigning
about Haldia. A local guy told me that I
was going to study in Shantiniketan Part
2. On enquiring what he meant by
Shantiniketan Part 2 he told me that as
there was no college building of the insti-
tute you are going to join, you people
would be studying under the trees similar
to the plight of the students in Shantini-
ketan.
On coming here, we got to know
that there was hostel facility which
turned out to be a place with factory
workers occupying the ground floor and
fighting and squabbling all the time. As
for the food, there was a local recreation
centre called the Binodan Kendra where
we used to go for our meals.
In our times, food only meant non-
vegetarian food. And the West Bengal
concept of vegetarian food meant re-
placement of fish with doi. There used
to be a treasure hunt for Dal everyday. I
used to search for the dal and the water
used to come out -a deeper search inside
and sometimes the dal came out.

But that is a very important part of
the college now. Now, I cant get such
food even if I pay for it. Trust me, it is
awesome. Complain, but get used to it
and enjoy it to the brim. You wont get
such a luxury in your life ever again.
When our classes started, we had
only 3 lecture rooms. And we had to
swivel in and out of the rooms all the
time because the students from other
departments would be queuing up out-
side for their class and we would be hur-
ried outside. Though we had labs, we had
no workshop so the secretary of HIT ar-
ranged with the local ITI for our workshop
classes. It was the same with books,
there were hardly two copies of the same
book in the college; the library wasnt
developed like it is now and we had to
wait for a long time to get access to the
book.
Students now and then:
You people have a lot more facili-
ties than we used to have at that time.
Right now, all you have to do is a Google
search, get the information from Wikipe-
dia to learn. Back at that time, I used to
fight with the Director for a mere internet
connection!
But the facilities will get better and
better as the time moves on and I feel it
is a privilege to have these facilities. Why
contributing to it. The model of The HIT
facilities for the best? It is for the growth
and when we talk about growth, it is
nothing but the better availability of re-
sources. What you have now, the next
generation will have it much easier. So
there is nothing to compare between the
students now and then. It is all a matter
of evolution.
One thing you would look for if you
were hiring a graduate student:
While hiring, I look whether the
fundamentals of the person is proper or
not. Knowing a subject is entirely differ-
ent thing altogether. If a subject is not
known, I can always send the person for
a few months of training and get him/her
updated on it. What is important is the
agility of that person, his capability to
learn. So it all comes down to three
things: hunger for success, attitude and
moral code of conduct.

been way back. I dont know why it was-

initiative and should be carried on with
full momentum. And the only way to do
this is to keep on doing it in subsequent
years by finding good substitutes. De-

There was palpable excitement in the
air. The queue in front of the PE depart-
ment kept growing longer, the nocturnal
activities in the boys hostels were surg-
ing to a peak and normal conversations
were replaced by how to improve a robot
or how to improvise a circuit while many
were occupied looking for locations to
shoot their movies. Yes!! everyone was
technically busy with the preparations
of Prayukti 2014, the annual tech fest of
Haldia Institute of Technology. The event
was officially inaugurated on 9th April
2014 in the SN Bose auditorium. The
dignitaries present included The Director,
Dr. A. K. De, The Registrar Dr. Anjan
Mishra and the chief guest Mr. Sudipto
Mukherjee, GM of HEA. There was a
plethora of events to look forward to and
an opportunity to learn and excel. The
flagship events of Prayukti like Yantriki
(robotics), Gospel (paper presentation),
ManiaC (programming), Ranbhoomi
(gaming) and Requizzit (quizzing) drew

participants in large numbers. However
HITians decided to explore unchartered
territory this year with the introduction of
many new events like A-Bet (debating),
De movier (short film making) and Knick
Knack (treasure hunt). There was a so-
cial awareness event called Disha
which included a cloth donation drive
and a street play on a social issue. The
street play was called Wings of Free-
dom performed by the Rang Milanti
group. The play enthralled and capti-
vated the audience and urged the soci-
ety to rethink about its attitude towards
women and chastised the media for the
way social atrocities against women are
portrayed.
Overall the Tech fest was a grand suc-
cess with 1400 students participating in
15 events across 3 days and 2 nights of

Souradip Sarkar The Campus Gets an Adrenaline Shot

M ountain Dew injected the college with a shot of adrenaline with an event the
likes of which were never experienced before. A troop of 5 bikers showing daring
stunts with their gorgeous bikes entertained the HIT student community on 9th April,
the opening day of Prayukti 2014. The event started at 3 in the afternoon but even the
scorching heat could not stop the entire HIT to flock at the Basketball ground, around
which barricades were set up. As the engines started grunting and rumbling, the
makeshift arena saw an exponential rise in the student crowd. The classes had been
whispering since morning, and speculations about the stunt event was trending more
than the black board topics. While the bikers zoomed and sped across showing off
their skills, the students cheered along, sipping the chilled Mountain Dew drinks that
were sold on promotional grounds, at a much cheaper price.
The event also had a group of guy volunteers doing push ups on the basketball
ground as the crowd watched on, with the person with maximum pushups winning
himself a bottle of Mountain Dew. The host of the show kept the crowd entertained
with his jokes and witty comments as scores of jaws dropped in awe and wonder at
the spectacular feats the bikers performed with their bikes.

H ello folks! I am back again and
this time it is with a super massive bang.
The reception to the first issue of The HIT
Times overwhelmed me with tears of joy
(figure of speech!). I am a pretty major
figure accounting for its success after all.

nificant figure instead of major.
As promised in the last issue, the
wittiest and most original ideas on my
structure are featured here:

I have been a proud observer of the
many new changes HIT went through this
year. The most notable of all is the cul-
tural boom that the college has seen
recently. People huddled in groups are
seen all over the campus every evening
discussing one new idea or the other. Be
it a new documentary, or a plan for an-
other flash mob, creativity is budding and
it promises a brighter day. The enthusi-
asm and involvement shown by the cur-
rent 1st years is truly amazing. It pleases
me immensely to see such a vast pool of
talent.
It is yet another even semester and
yet another batch is ready to bid its fare-
well to the college. Everywhere I look, I
see students in beige shirts taking their
last photographs with their friends and
having their last adda sessions at their
beloved theks. The laughter in their eyes,
the memories in their smiles, the nu-
ances in their voices as they talk fondly
about their time here, fills me with a bit-
tersweet emotion. The college bids adieu
to the batch of 2014 and wishes them all
the success in their lives. You people will

My attention was drawn to yet an-
other happening in the campus. The

it comes with a price. And that price is

like cold drinks.

Because we are refrigerating it.
And who is paying the money on
which the electricity is being run?
There is another curious thing asso-
ciated with it. For people who chose to
revolt to it instead of submission, the
solution that was offered was to charge
the MRP if it was paid instantly but imple-
ment extra charges if it was entered into
the monthly mess account of the stu-

money in their pockets all the time? And
why is the extra money charged on every
product anyway?
Paying the MRP is not a choice. It is
our right.
The excuse of refrigeration is com-
mon with every retailer. What we are
unaware of is that the soft drink compa-
nies whose products these retailers sell
take care of all inclusive expenses like
cooling charge, transportation charge
and storage charge while deciding the
MRP while leaving a percentage margin
for profit at the same time. And as most
of us know, charging a price greater than
the Maximum Retail Price is a violation
of the Standards of Weights and Meas-
ures Rules, 1977.
It might seem unimportant to some
who think it a nuisance to fuss over a
mere Re.1 extra on something. Who has
become rich by saving that puny amount
might be the argument of many. But it is
not the matter of how much we are sav-
ing; it is the matter of what we are paying
for and why. It is an illegal act and by
keeping silent, we are paving the road to
further deterioration of the country.
What is then, the solution?
As suggested by the Superintendant
of the hostel, the girls could stop buying
for a while. Or as the owner himself says,
the girls could pay the amount then and
there. But what can be done to entirely
STOP the extra money hoarding entirely?

NTPT 2014
Non- Thermal Preservation Techniques:
Emerging Innovation for sustainable, safe and
healthy foods (NTPT-2014), organized by the
Department of Food Technology, Haldia Insti-
tute of Technology, presented a refreshing
aroma of technology, mixed with entertain-
ment in a two day seminar from 21st to 22nd
March. This national seminar received emi-
nent delegates from all over the country,
stressing on the importance of non-thermal
processes in the upcoming techniques of food
preservation.
The two day seminar raised its curtains
sharp at 10 AM on 21st March. Dr. Sumita
Das, Convenor and Mr. Gourab Chatterjee, Co-
Convenor of the Organizing committee,
hosted the inaugural session which included a
soulful Rabindra- Sangeet sung by Prof. Bi-
kash Bepari, Head of Production Engineering
Department, Haldia Institute of Technology.
The song was followed by speeches from the
Director, The Registrar and the Head of De-
partment of Food Technology, Dr. Avik Muk-
herjee.
The Keynote speech was addressed by
Prof. Parimal Chattopadhyay, Ex-Professor
and Head of Department of Food Technology
and Biochemical Engineering, Jadavpur Uni-
versity, Kolkata, who stressed on the rising
importance and advantages of Non- Thermal
processes while maintaining a soft corner for
the present thermal techniques as well. He
also chaired the technical sessions which saw
the experts from both academic and indus-
trial sectors enlightening the audience on the
various scopes of non-thermal techniques.
The poster presentation was the mag-
num opus event of the day where a record
number of 63 posters were displayed by the
college students as well as by the visiting
participants. Divided into five categories, the
posters presented a large number of patents
and latest technologies and were a colorfully
informative event. It was a wonderful experi-

Samriddhi: I have learnt to adjust in every sort
of situation and live with the bare minimum. I
mean, the only best thing you get here to eat
is Maggi Bhaja! Being used to the city life,
Haldia and the hostel life here has matured
me a lot. So it has been a nice growing experi-
ence which has taught me the way of life and
made me a much stronger person than what I
was a year before.
Indrajit: First year was a bit of a struggle with
the ragging which I loved sometimes and
hated sometimes. But it made me interact
with the seniors which proved to be very use-
ful later. Haldia is fun in many ways; the best
thing about here is the silence which is some-
thing you dont find in cities.
Avinash: Haldia has been an entirely new
experience for me. It has taught me to live
with different kinds of people and has en-
hanced the leadership qualities that I had. I
have also worked on my negative points
which have made me a better person than I
was earlier.
Avijit: HIT is a platform that teaches you every-
thing from living on your own to building your
career. So the things it offers us for the learn-
ing experience is same for everyone but the
difference lies in what every individual makes
out of it. Hostel life was good for me; I had
good rapport with the seniors from the very
beginning. One of my best experiences here
was Prayukti 2014; the fun I had in it is inex-
plicable.
Sulagna: The best thing about Haldia is that it
is green and quiet. At least greener and qui-
eter than Kolkata, the place where I come
