Research

- Age

For my Radio show I need to make sure that I target my audience I the correct manor. The
target audience for my Radio show will be 18-29 so it is mainly aiming for the attention from
young adults who are either at university or working in apprenticeships or just regular
employment. We will bear in mind that people under the age of 18 will be viewing the Radio
show such as college students and maybe even some elder high school student also.
For the advertisement of my Radio show, it will be aired on TV from 3:30PM 11PM. I have
chosen this time range because this is time where people get home from college / university
but also the times when people come home from work and are eating their tea at night in
front of their television. The TV channels I have chosen to advertise my Radio show on is BBC
3, Comedy Central, Dave, ITV and Fox,
I have chosen these channels because I think that majority of the audience of these channels
and the same type of audience which I want viewing my Radio show, also on these channel
their main hit shows are aired within the same time range as when I scheduled the Radio
shows advert to be aired too.
Now that I have picked the age range for my audience I now need to keep my audiences age
in mind when the Radio show is in full production, this being in picking the appropriate song
to play and bringing in people in the music industry that people in that certain age range are
actually interested in.
- Gender

When it comes to gender and Radio shows I dont think being specific to a certain gender
can be done very well, especially with the age range I have chosen for my Radio show. My
age range is 18-29 so young adults, most people go to the same places for nights out and
music festival where all the same music is played, so regardless of gender the music that is
played on my Radio show should appeal to all.
Since my Radio show is being advertised on channel mainly targeted at adults this is also
means my Radio show will only be targeted at adults, there for none of the music will be
censored compared to other platforms that may censor some lyrics of songs.

- Socio economic grouping

Socio economics grouping and charts basically shows the different groups of living people in
relation to salary, from Upper class to Lower class. From the chart below it shows the
percentage of Upper class, Upper-middle class, Middle class, working class and Lower class
and it goes what percentage of people live in that specific class that year, from 2000-2015.
From looking at the information from this chart you can a slight decrease and the amount of
people living in Upper class, from 3% to 1% and the percentage of people living in Lower
class has risen by a huge amount, from 3% to 15%! Because our target audience of is young
adults (18-29) they will most probably be working in the Working Lower class. Therefore
we must keep in mind that our target audience dont have lots of spare money to spend on
luxuries such as our Radio and we must keep in mind that the majority of our audience will
be earning around 6.70 an hour.
- Lifestyle
The Lifestyle of my target audience is mostly student so this means that the majority of my
target audience is students where there is a lot of travelling and time where they are
studying independently or when there out in a group with their friends. These are the
perfect time for them to listen to the Radio show. The Radio show will have an App for both
the Google play store and Apples App store so people can just open the app and listen in to
the station straight away. Also when the show has an artist in for an interview it will also be
broadcasted through the app and then afterwards the video would be shortened slightly and
edited then put up on the Radio shows YouTube channel after for people who missed it to
watch it back.

- Newspapers
Newspapers is a definite way that I can advertise my Radio show but I definitely do not think
that it is the smartest or most efficient way to advertise the radio show at all. I think it is a
bad idea to advertise it in a Newspaper because since the age range of my target audience is
18-29, its a lot less likely they will pick up and buy a newspaper, near to all young people
and most people in general now get their news from things like the BBC New App on their
Mobile phones.

- Magazines
One of the main places I will also be advertising my Radio station will be in Magazines,
specifically music magazines. I only want to advertise my music magazines because I think
the majority of people that buy and pick up music magazines are within the range age of my
target audience and it wouldnt make sense for me to advertise my Radio music show in a
magazine that has nothing to do with music. I believe advertising my Radio show in music
magazines will be very effective since people buy them magazines for music, the music
magazines I will be wanting to advertise my Radio show in is magazines such as NME and Q
magazine.
- Internet
The internet is the biggest thing which will help me set up my Radio show and help me get
all the research and information that I need before starting anything. The websites which
will help me the most I think will be Google where I can research my competition with in the
music industry and also take a look at how the other music radio shows operate and see if I
can operate mine better by doing things which they dont that I think the target audience
will want to see. The other website that I think will help me the most is YouTube. I think
YouTube is also a great way to study other Radio shows in how they do their artist interviews
etc. I will also be using YouTube to use snippets of video of some of the artists that will come
on for interviews and live performances on the show, I will make sure that none of these
videos are copyrighted.

- Researching the competitors

Researching into my competitors is a very important thing to do before starting and the
Radio show because I need to see what makes other Radio shows so popular and then see
how I can develop my Radio show better and add something new that the others do not
have to make it stand out and be more unique in the market, offering what other do not.
I have also research and watched adverts from other Radio shows in the same region and I
believe that a lot them dont have a lot of creativity in how they edited there advert and I
think mine will catch peoples eye a lot more and be a lot more upbeat.
I believe my radio station has more to offer than any other Radio station in the Manchester
area and also even in the whole country because my Radio station will cover many more
platforms than your average Radio station and because it will be advertised and have its
name and product involved in many different platform across the music and Radio industry I
believe that it will become very popular and recognised very easily recognised across the
Music and radio community.

- Researching the market

The market which I am researching is the Radio station market and the Radio show market
since mine is a mix of both. A lot of the time Radio stations and shows are separate things,
many Radio stations just broadcast audio with popular music and will tell you about traffic,
news etc. Most Radio shows just interview artists which they invite to their studio and the
artist may do a short live performance too. These Radio shows only tend to invite guests,
record the interview, edit it down then upload it to their YouTube channel for people
subscribed to their channel to see. My Radio show is going to be both of these, a
broadcasted radio station that you can access in your car from your radio, on your computer
through the website and also on mobile devices through the app where you can tune in
when travelling with your headphones on etc. Interviews with artist will also be broadcasted
through the radio broadcasts but will also be recorded and edit to be upload onto the radio
shows YouTube channel for the people who missed it live to watch it at a later date.

- Mock-up
A mock up is a scale model of the product which you will be advertising, I do not think that
making a mock up for a Radio studio is very effective because it will cost a lot of money to
mock up a Radio station so I would just rather film the actual studio for the advert of the
show.
- RAJAR

- RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research Limited) was established in 1992 to operate a
single audience measurement system for the radio industry in the United Kingdom.
RAJAR is jointly owned by the BBC and the Radio Centre. Prior to this, the BBC and
Radio Centres predecessor (The CRCA) carried out their own measurements
independently of each other.
- The company operates as a Joint Industry Committee (JIC) and its Board is chaired by
an independent Chairman. It has shareholder representation from the BBC and the
commercial sector as well as the IPA (Institute of practitioners in advertising) and the
ISBA (Incorporated Society of British Advertisers). The company is a non- profit
making entity.
- RAJAR collects information on behalf of over 300 BBC and Ofcom Licensed
commercial radio stations, ranging from very small local services to the national
networks. Station listening by time, duration, platform (AM/FM, DAB, Online/APP,
and DTV) and location (in car, at home, at work, or elsewhere) is recorded and
published on a quarterly basis

- BARB

Barb is short for Broadcasters audience research board and is it programme used by the BBC
for them to get a good estimate of the number of people watching their programmes. The
data that BARB gives the BBC is things like the views of each channels and the specific
programmes on that channel and also an estimate of the age range of viewers watching that
channel at the time.
The information is obtained from panels of viewers from selected television-owning
households, representative of each ITV and BBC region.
Once a household has been recruited to the BARB panel, Kantar Media fits every TV set in
the home with a meter. Software meters are also installed on laptop and desktop computers,
and tablets. In order for the meter to know who is watching, each member of the household
over the age of four is assigned a button on a special remote control. If they enter a room
while the television is on they must press their designated button to register their presence
and press it again when they leave to show they are no longer watching.
- CAA
The Cinema Advertising Association (CAA) is the Trade Association of cinema advertising
contractors operating in the UK. One of the functions of the CAA is to monitor and maintain
standards of advertising exhibition in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
The CAA recognise the guidelines for commercial content as outlined in the UK Code of Non-
broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (the CAP Code) which is
policed by the Advertising Standards Authority, and the Code of Standards for Advertising,
Promotional and Direct Marketing in Ireland.

- ELSPA
Founded as the European Leisure Software
Publishers Association (UK) Ltd in 1989, ELSPA's goal was to establish a specific and collective
identity for the interactive leisure software industry across the European community. ELSPA's
Membership includes almost all companies concerned with the publishing and distribution
of interactive leisure software in
the UK.

- Interviews
Interviews are a is the best and I think the only way to find the people who are best for the
Radio show before it starts broadcasting. When interviewing for a Radio show I would be
interviewing for editing the interviews once an artist has been in the studio, organising the
playlist for the songs to be played on that certain day and also we would need someone who
is also familiar with all the equipment which is being used in the studio, it would be very
useful.

- Questionnaires
Questionnaires and quick surveys are a very good and efficient way to gain information and
feedback about your product. Ideally you will want to get feedback from viewers of your
Radio show for things that you may need to improve on because when you first start any
kind of production / show there will be some minor faults to start off with. For the Radio
show we would add short surveys at the bottom of a page on our website and on the app
where people can take a couple of minutes to fill them in, we would only ask 2-4 questions
at a time because if people see that there is a lot of questions, no
one will want to fill it in and complete it.

- Market Research on topic, Target Audience

Just to confirm, for my Radio show I need to make sure that I target my audience I the correct
manor. The target audience for my Radio show will be 18-29 so it is mainly aiming for the
attention from young adults who are either at university or working in apprenticeships or
just regular employment. We will bear in mind that people under the age of 18 will be
viewing the Radio show such as college students and maybe even some elder high school
student also.
