1. Executive Summary

Notre Dame of Kidapawan College is a Marist Educational Institution, primarily

dedicated to the education of the young. The campus is divided into 3 main groups, the
College, Elementary and High School departments. As an educational institution, the
school provided facilities to aid the education of the students, this facilities include
computers and other energy consuming loads that add up to the schools total energy
consumption.

As far as electrical load is concerned, NDKCs top power consuming loads are the
computers(in the computer room) and air conditioning units, most of which is located on
the College Department, specifically, Bro. Bernard Curtin Hall (commonly known as Old
Building).
This project aims to look into the energy consumption of this key area of the
school.
2. Energy Policy

Energy Policy

Notre Dame of Kidapawan College

As part of the companys environmental and sustainable development strategies we are

dedicated to responsibly manage energy. Wherever possible we will endeavor to follow
good practice methods and utilize new technologies in order to minimize and reduce the
effect of any negative environmental impact associated with energy consumption.

The company has enormous responsibility for this policy but recognizes that every
personnel, rank-and-file and staff alike, and management must contribute to the eventual
reduction of energy use without sacrificing quality and quantity of production. Decisions
on how and where services are delivered on the premises, the plant and equipment
purchased, and how it is used, all have energy implications.

This corporate policy requires services to work through an energy 'hierarchy' whereby
they consider how they can; reduce the need for energy use; use energy more efficiently;
use renewable energy; minimize the impact of fossil fuels.

Good energy management must mean that our actions are reasonable, practicable and
above all compliant with legislation. In addition, our Aims, Objectives and Targets must
be realistic and achievable.

The President and the Leader of the Council encourage everyone, staff and
residents of the authority, to act in a way which will enhance rather than harm the
environment, and will gladly receive any practical suggestions about ways in which our
performance can be improved.
3. Chapter I Introduction

a. Background about the company and its operation

Notre Dame of Kidapawan College (locally known as NDKC) is

a Catholic institution run by the Marist Brothers or FMS (Fratres Maristae a
Scholis), a Catholic religious order from France. It offers elementary, high school,
college and postgraduate courses (consortium with NDDU and independent
program).
Located in Kidapawan City, Cotabato, Philippines. NDKC has been a
member of the Notre Dame Educational Association, a group of Notre Dame
Schools in the Philippines under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The school offers variety of courses from engineering to business courses.
Among those courses, the institution is proud to have provided adequate facilities
to ensure proper instruction. Computer laboratories and course specific
laboratories were provided such as ECE laboratory, Physics Laboratory and
Chemistry Laboratory, each of which were equipped with proper equipments and
apparatus.
Among the laboratories mentioned above, the computer laboratories are of
the most use since non-IT related courses also use them for some basic computer
courses.
Among the facilities provided by the school, it is appropriate to mention
the college library, which is equipped with both hardcopy(books) and softcopy of
reference materials, the library is also well equipped in terms of air conditioning
and lighting making it suitable for studying.
Notre Dame of Kidapawan College stands as the leading college in
Kidapawan City and notably known for its good reputation in the province.
b. Objectives

NDKC aims to educate the young with its mission: Integral

Evangelization through Christian , Responsive, and Quality education .With this
in mind, the institution provides facilities necessary for competent education. This
facilities , however, consumes energy and thus contributes to the institutions
expenses.

The goal of this study is to asses the schools energy consumption on

some key areas and propose ways in which energy consumption can be lowered to
minimum.

c. Scope and Limitations (application of the energy management system to the

company)

Energy management system is not yet implemented on the institution. If

implemented, the group suggests the following scope and limitations of EMS to
the the institution:

Provide energy consumption monitoring and assessment on the schools key

areas.
Propose ways in which power consumption may be reduced in this areas.

The study is limited to the preliminary audit of the Bro.Bernard Curtin

Hall(Old Building) in the College area, which houses the computer room and
some of the key offices in the institution. The reason for that is most of the high
consuming loads are located on this area.(see Appendix A for billing comparison
and B for Electrical Load Distribution by percentage).
d. Definition of Terms

Bro. Bernard Curtin Hall - one of the main building in the college area of Notre
Dame of Kidapawan College

ECE - Refers to the Electronics Engineering program

EMS - Energy Management System

IT - Information Technology

Marist or Marist Brothers- a member of the Little Brothers of Mary, a Roman

Catholic teaching congregation.

NDDU - Notre Dame of Dadiangas University, a sister

school of NDKC
4. Chapter II Energy Management System

a. Proposed Model

The model above primarily focuses on the energy audit and analysis of the possible areas
for energy saving opportunities for the institution

b. Flow of operation

The whole process starts with goal setting. In this model, the primary goal
is to evaluate the energy consumption and utilization of the organization and find
key areas wherein energy can be saved.

During diagnosis, the areas under management , processes and equipment used
are checked , assessed, analyzed and if problems arise, those problems are solved.

Check: Managers should identify whether their equipment is is still

functioning efficiently.
Assess: Managers should also evaluate equipment that is not yet outdated t
determine its energy efficiency based on national and international
standards.

Analyze: Low operating efficiency is caused by:

Low quality equipment

Improper service maintenance and operation; and

Process requirements that render equipment less efficient.

Solve: To correct efficiency problems managers should:

Replace obsolete equipment with new energy efficient models;

Improve energy management, including the establishment of

equipment operation and maintenance policies; and

After proper diagnosis has been executed, the auditing team then
identifies key areas that shows potential for energy saving.
5. Chapter III Data Analysis

a. Energy Consumption
i. Daily Energy Consumption (include cost)

ii. Monthly Consumption (include cost)

As seen on the data, the monthly estimated consumption is close to the

value of the billing statement of the combined college and computer room.(See
appendices for billing statement).
b. List of Electrical Loads
i. Lighting
ii. Air-conditioner

iii. Computers
c. Proposed Systems and Procedures to save on energy cost

6. Chapter IV Conclusion and Recommendations

As seen on the energy audit, the institutions significant loads are the
computers and the air-conditioning units. This two significant loads are seen to be
running idle on schedule intervals, which in some cases runs for one to two
periods a day.

The group recommends that the administration should look into a more
efficient scheduling of usage of facilities with air conditioning units and
computers. The schedule should be layed-out in a way that the computers and air
conditioning units dont run idle for few hours on during class intervals.

Laboratory usage schedules should be clearly specified and strictly

implemented so that equipment will only be energized on the scheduled time and
not kept running idle from the very first period.
