Paint.

How it went The blackboards were set up in the outdoor environment in the quiet area to enable concentration from
children and Charlotte approached the area. She was joined by her peers. Charlotte drew the number 5,
What is that I asked curiously. It is my number I am 5 she responded. Charlotte began drawing a human
like figure. I encouraged her to write what she was drawing as a process of labelling. How do you write
me she said. I recited the letters M and E which she copied appropriately. She drew a triangle on the top of
her image. See this is my party hat because I am 5 now she said. How do you write hat Courtney? She
asked. I sounded out each letter which Charlotte had drawn. Why did you draw yourself with a party hat
Charlotte? I asked. Because silly, thats what I wore to my party on the weekend she concluded.
Evaluation The arts provide a vehicle for children to integrate their learning and open up many opportunities to learn
(Isbell & Raines, 2012).Charlotte drew something of meaning to her and symbolic of her past birthday she
had experienced. Charlotte confidently shares what she is doing with her educator through verbal
communication (EYLF.5.1) and uses the creative art forms to express her ideas creatively (EYLF.4.1,5.3).
Additionally, Charlotte is able to transfer what she has learnt about the look of party hats to her school
environment (EYLF.4.3). Throughout this experience Charlotte showed how she uses numeracy in her play
stating that she is 5. When Charlotte uses the blackboards and chalk she is learning the properties of
materials embedding science (EYLF.4.2) and manipulation of the chalk to create her design furthers her fine
motor development (EYLF.3.2).

Future As Charlotte demonstrates she is a visual/spatial leaner I would like to provide multiple opportunities for her
opportunities to draw, paint or sculpt her ideas so she is able to express feelings, moods and ideas through art (Gardner, Comment [CB4]: Future extension of learning which is used
1983). to inform future planning to extend learning.

Teaching Modelling and scaffolding was provided throughout educator pronouncing the letters to Charlotte in order
strategies to for her to replicate on her drawing. Open ended questioning when Charlotte finished her drawing to deepen
her thinking.
