Procedure
1 The lightning strike is an incident that occurs when lightning hits the helicopter.

2 When you think that a lighting strike hits the helicopter, tell the Manufacturer of this condition. If
possible, tell the Manufacturer the entrance point of the lighting strike, its path on the fuselage
and its exit point.

3 Do the precautions, inspections and maintenance that follow:

3.1 Visually examine all external surfaces of the helicopter, carefully examine:

The main rotor head (blades and hub)

The main transmission assembly

The tail rotor hub and blades

The 90-degree gearbox and vertical fin

Do a check of the instruments and related system. Replace defective and/or damaged parts.

3.2 Examine the engines. Refer to Maintenance Manual of the PW207C engine.

3.3 If you find damage, continue as follows:

3.3.1 Examine main rotor blades. If blades show signs that follow, discard blades:

Examine blades for signs of burns. Burn marks may be very small

Examine blades in bonded areas for signs of de-bond.

3.3.2 Remove the components that follow from the helicopter:

The main rotor head. Refer to 0B-A-62-21-02-00A-520A-A

The main transmission assembly. Refer to 0B-A-63-21-00-00A-520A-A

Send the components you removed to the Manufacturer or to an Authorized Repair Station for
a detailed inspection and the necessary corrective procedures. Refer to the applicable chapters
of the Component Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P). Write the component
log cards that a lightning strike is the cause for the removal.

3.3.3 Examine all rotating controls for signs of arcing or burning.

Replace all bearings that do not rotate smoothly

If you find arcing or burning or bearings do not rotate smoothly, remove swashplate assembly.
Refer to 0B-A-62-32-00-00A-520A-A

Send the swashplate assembly you removed to the Manufacturer or to an Authorized Repair
Station for a detailed inspection and the necessary corrective procedures. Refer to the
applicable chapter of the Component Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P).
Write the component log card that a lightning strike is the cause for the removal.

3.3.4 Remove the tail rotor hub assembly. Refer to:

0B-A-64-21-01-00A-520A-A.

3.3.5 Remove the 90-degree gearbox. Refer to 0B-A-65-21-01-00A-520A-A.

3.3.6 Send the components you removed to the Manufacturer or to an Authorized Repair Station for a
detailed inspection and the necessary corrective procedures. Refer to the applicable chapters of
the Component Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P). Write the component log
card that a lightning strike is the cause for the removal.

3.3.7 Examine adjacent area of 90-degree gearbox attachment points for signs of arcing or burning.

3.3.8 Examine vertical fin for signs of arcing or burning.

3.4 If you find no signs of damage continue as follow:

3.4.1 Examine main rotor head as follows:

Visually examine elastomeric bearings for signs of arcing or burning

Examine dampers, related attachments and hub for signs of arcing or burning

Visually examine grips (external surfaces of plates, pitch control lever and aft bracket
attachment bolts) for signs of arcing or burning

If you find signs of arcing or burning or bearings with damage, remove the main rotor head from
the helicopter. Refer to 0B-A-62-21-02-00A-520A-A

Send the main rotor head you removed to the Manufacturer or to an Authorized Repair Station
for a detailed inspection and the necessary corrective procedures. Refer to the applicable
chapter of the Component Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P). Write the
component log card that a lightning strike is the cause for the removal.

3.4.2 Remove main rotor mast from the helicopter. Refer to the applicable chapter of the Component
Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P).

Visually examine bearings for signs of arcing and burning. Do a check of bearings for
smoothness of rotation (fully examine the surface of each ball or roller)

Visually examine the lower bearing race and driving spline on mast for signs of arcing or
burning

If you find signs of arcing and/or burnings or bearings with damage, remove the main
transmission assembly from the helicopter. Refer to 0B-A-63-21-00-00A-520A-A

Send the main transmission assembly you removed to the Manufacturer or to an Authorized
Repair Station for a detailed inspection and the necessary corrective procedures. Refer to the
applicable chapter of the Component Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P).
Write the component log card that a lightning strike is the cause for the removal.

3.4.3 Remove the 90-degree gearbox from the helicopter. Refer to 0B-A-65-21-01-00A-520A-A.

Visually examine the 90-degree gearbox shaft teeth for signs of arcing or burning

Do a check of bearings for smoothness of rotation

If you find signs of arcing and/or burnings or bearings with damage send the 90-degree

gearbox you removed to the Manufacturer or to an Authorized Repair Station for a detailed
inspection and the necessary corrective procedures. Refer to the applicable chapter of the
Component Repair and Overhaul Publication (0B-A-CR&OP-00-P). Write the component Log
Card that a lightning strike is the cause for the removal.

3.5 The Authorized Repair Station must tell the Manufacturer the damage found during the detailed
inspection and wait for further information.
