Latinos are a missing perspective

What is a missing perspective?

Form
The Latino voice is a missing narrative in America.
The Latino voice is a missing narrative in America.
As a Latina I eat different foods. I speak
Spanish at home and in my community with other
Latinos. Sometimes I dress differently. I wear a
long dress, but in the end we're all the same
I am very proud of who I am but I do feel
invisible and misrepresented in America as a
Latina. I feel invisible in books and billboards. I do
not see myself in the books at school or the ads on
TV. It is like am not here all.
-Katie
Where is the Latina voice missing?

Function

Latinos are not represented

Where is the Latina voice missing?
As a Latina, I'm not well represented in posters, books,
Function and the arts, as other races are. My favorite book is
Esperanza Rising because it is a book where I can see myself
in the characters. Esperanza Rising is like the only book I
can think of with a Latina character that we have in class. I
hope one day we get a lot of books that show the Latinos
perspective. Not seeing myself in books makes me feel bad
and I worry that I will never see myself in the books I read.
Everytime I finish a book, I ask my teacher if she has a book
where the character looks like me. Her response is, nothing
or I havent found anything yet. I get disappointed in her
answer and I feel like all my teachers could do a better job of
searching for books where I am present. I am always hoping
that she will have a book where there is a character who is
Latino, or looks like me. I hope one day we get a lot of books
that show the Latinos perspective.

Why is the Latina voice missing?

Causation
False stories of Latinos in politics, media, books and ads leads to
stereotypes

3 Myths

Most immigrants are here illegally.

The worst people from other countries are coming

to the United States and bringing crime and violence.

Undocumented immigrants dont pay taxes

Why is the Latina voice missing? I feel sad when I see people voting for the
wall and people seeing them looking at me like if
Causation something was wrong with me. Although I love
America, America is becoming dangerous for me.
When people look at me, not wanting to talk to
me, I feel like I am not in the right spot, told to
go away, move away from a place I call home.
I am a hard worker. I am a powerful Latina. I
will not let people change that. I want to put the
real story out there about Latinos, not the fake
one mentioned in the news or what is being said
in politics. The wall between Mexico and America
does not represent my Latino culture and a wall
will not stop people from being immigrants. I
would like people to get to know other people. If
you want to understand the Latino perspective,
just listen.

Listening to the Latino Narrative develops understanding and stops stereotypes

What comes up for you?
What do you feel, believe and think how does it connect?

Connection
The negativity and stereotypes in the world brings worry to Latinos.
The negativity and stereotypes in the world brings worry to Latinos.

I like speaking my home language with my mom. I

worry when I speak with her in public because I dont
want people to say things about me. When I have gone
shopping with her and we are speaking to each other in
Spanish, I have heard others say Why are they here, they
should leave! These unkind words people say about
Latinos, about me, is hurtful. I wonder if they really know
who I am. So, it makes me afraid to speak to others in
Spanish with non Spanish speaking people around.
-Katie P
What is my responsibility in showing my voice?
what do others (non-latinos) need to do to?

Responsibility

Speak my truth about our perspective.

Responsibility And I feel like people think that Latinos bring all the bad things into
the United States and the world. Some people don't trust us. Some
people dont like us, in fact, they hate Latinos. The wall between America
and Mexico makes me angry. I feel not loved because what shared about
Mexicans by non-Mexicans. How I am viewed as a Latina is not my story.
When people voted for Trump it was like they voted for the wall as well.
The wall for me represents that people dont want me, that Latinos are
bad, I am bad, not useful. When I hear President Donald Trump saying
Make America Great Again that means building a wall and pushing out
Mexicans. By building the wall is like being told I am trash. Throwing
amazing Latinas and Latinos out of American because we are garbage...All
I want to do with the wall is smash it all up. I am not scared if I get taken
by the police because my life, my true story is not being listened to, and
that is what I must do to be heard. I can not be quiet. There are times
when I am both angry and sad about how I am seen by others and I feel
that it is on others to get to know me. I ask that you take a chance on me
and listen who I really am and help change what is being said about me.

Perspective

The Latinos lives are important

Perspective: Katie The Latinos lives are important

My family has worked hard to give me the life they have

always wanted. Where they are from, education is rare. My
parents grew up in El Salvador, not in a house but in a metal
shack or under a tree. My dad had to leave his country because of
war. During the war, the pandilleros came into his home and killed
my Grandpa. My family needed to leave in order to stay alive.
I want people to listen to more. I want them to listen to more
than one story before making a judgement about me. I want
people to see me as caring, kind, hospitable, a funny young girl,
and a Human, just like you.
- Katie
Perspective: Karla The Latinos lives are important

One time I was asked by a teacher to read books in Spanish to

others classes. I got so excited when Mrs. Runke-Jones offered
me to read. I was glad that I was given the opportunity to speak
in my home language to other students. When I was reading to
students some of were Latino students, their eyes widened.
There was a connection between myself and the younger Latina
students. It felt so good.

I also like is that we can speak our language in our school. That
makes me feel safe. I have a lot of Latino friends and family. I
feel comfortable around them because we can speak our
language. I love hanging out with my friends. I like going to
Spanish class where I can always talk my language and feel like
I'm in a safe place.
-Karla
Perspective - Kiara The Latinos lives are important

The best thing about my life is being with my family. My family works so hard to keep
us safe and our family together. They too have to be careful at work because they are
judged by other because of where they come from. They help other Latinos feel safe
because it is hard to know who will be nice to you. I, just like my family, have many
white friends but sometime it feels like you can't trust them because they will say
something about immigrants, or building the wall that is hurtful.

As a family we eat together every night whether its a home or a restaurant. When
we eat out we mostly go restaurants that speak Spanish as it is comfortable for my
family to be able to speak Spanish. My parents like it when they get to speak
Spanish because when they are at work they have to speak English all the time.
Going to Spanish speaking places and using our own language is peaceful because
we don't need to worry about other people looking at them, us or anything.
