Term Project: Dynamic Analy: ofa 9-Story Structure This project involves the dynamic analysis of a 9-storey office building subjected to the Canoga Park earthquake record. Descriptions of a typical floor plan and the moment resisting frame systems are attached herewith. Note that, for the perimeter frames, one of the exterior bays has only one moment resisting connection (to avoid bi-axial bending in the comer columns). Beams and columns are specified as grade 50 steel (F, = SOksi ). The seismic mass for the structures is as follows: Roof 75 kips — sec*/ft Floor 9 to Floor 3 70 kips — sec/ft Floor 2 72 kips — sec/ft Assume the seismic mass is inclusive (including floor weight, ete...) The earthquake record (acceleration data, in/sec’) can be obtained on the course web site. There are two components for the earthquake record, Component 1 is assumed to be inthe N-S direction and component 2 is, assumed to be in the E-W direction. The time increment for the earthquake ground acceleration record is taken to be 0.02 seconds. The record is to be applied one component at a time. ‘Two types of analyses are to be performed: 1. response spectrum analysis (using both SRSS and CQC methods) and 2. time history analysis ‘The report must include the description of the model, assumptions made, the basic modal information (natural periods, mode shapes) and the number of modes selected for the analyses. For each analysis, the following information for the perimeter moment frames should be reported: 1. the floor displacements and interstory drift ratios 2. the maximum shear and moment of each member 3. the members and (end) locations where the yield moments are exceeded, if any, In addition the minimum requirements as noted, interested groups may include combining the results from the two earthquake components by applying a typical 100% and 30% rule. Other pertinent results and discussions that deem relevant to the analyses are also welcome. ‘The dynamic analyses are to be performed using dynamic structural analysis programs. Although a tutorial session is prov emphasized that it is your responsibility to learn how to use this “friendl TABS, one of the most commonly used led, it should be ” software program. ‘The major part of the work very likely will be to find out what to do and in the modeling part. Each response spectrum analysis should take couple minutes at the most. Time history analyses may take up to 20-30 minutes per each case. ‘This is a group project with up to 2 students participating in each group. At the conclusion of the project, the following are required from each group: © A group report which should include summary of results ~ the results should be concise in the report and with attachments for selective computer printouts © Individual effort report which should include the work performed by individual members. © All relevant calculations and relevant computer output All reports must be neatly typed or written, concisely presented, and submitted before June 3, 2016. Warning: START EARLY and NO EXCUSE WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR INCOMPLETE PROJECTS A final note: We will be discussing the methodologies used in the computer program as the lectures proceed. Therefore, you may be modeling and analysing the structure without fully understanding the theories. Iam hopeful that the “big picture” will become clear at the end of the quarter. The analysis results are fundamental to understand and synthesize lateral design of structures. This exercise will also give you a preview on some of the issues involved in earthquake engineering.
