Title

A Quantitative Study on Application of Cold Formed Steel Section in place of

Conventional Hot Rolled Section in certain Building Components.
Keywords
Cold-Formed Steel, Hot-Rolled Steel, Staircase, Equipment support, Pipe rack, Steel
Tonnage.

ABSTRACT

Introduction
Scope of the paper is to study the implication of use of Cold formed Steel as Structural
components. An initiative has been taken to explore the possibility of obtaining sustainable
design using Cold formed Steel sections.
Thin steel sheet products of thickness 1 to 5mm are extensively used in building
industry. These thin steel sections are cold-formed, i.e. their manufacturing process involves
forming steel sections in a cold state (i.e. without application of heat) from steel sheets of
uniform thickness. These are given the generic title Cold Formed Steel Sections.
A comparative study has been made between the quantity of steel arrived by
substituting Cold formed steel section as structural components instead of Hot rolled sections.
Structural components taken into consideration are Staircase, Pipe supports and equipment
supports of a chemical processing unit.

Objective/Purpose
The objective of the paper is
To use light gauge steel sections as structural components in place of conventional
steel sections.
To compare steel tonnage, economy and environmental aspects.

Procedure
The project is carried out as per the following execution process,

1. Modelling, Analysis and Design of the components selected for the study are done in
STAAD Pro. using both hot rolled and cold formed sections as per American
Standards.
2. Steel tonnage, environmental and cost impacts of the replacement are quantitatively
compared
Results/Conclusions
Achieved considerable saving of steel while using cold formed section as structural
elements in the selected structural components.

L&T TS relevance
In structural design at L&T TS, the most commonly used sections are Hot rolled steel
sections. However, Cold formed steel sections made of thin sheets are a promising light-
weight replacement for the conventional sections.
This study can be used as a ready-reference/literature/guideline to suggest Cold
formed sections in structural elements such as staircases, equipment and pipe supporting
structures in projects where tonnage of steel and environmental impact are significant.
