Galen Rowell

He was born in 1940 in Oakland and
raised in Berkeley, California. He was a
Wilderness explorer from a early age and
started climbing mountains at the age of
10!
He began to take photographs of the
places he explored as a way to share the
beautiful places he saw with friends and
family. During this time, he discovered he
was actually quite good at taking photos
and in 1972 he became a full-time
photographer.
His first big break was in 1974
where he was asked to
Photograph the cover for
National Geographic. For that
he used a brand of
participatory wilderness photography.
Whereby the photographer isnt being an
observer but is an active part of the
photograph.

Graduated Neutral-Density Filters

When you have a high contrast of light
from one area to another.
Graduated ND Filters have one half of the
filter at a neutral density which changes
gradually, into the other half which is
clear.
This helps to reduce the the intensity of
the light from part of an area that may be
brighter than another.
