III. INTRODUCTION

Jan is the land of the Pukamurus, who were brave and fearsome warlike men; they had
a knowledge about the marvellous jungle region. Also they were excellent swimmers
and they lived on the banks of the Chinchipe Zamora and Maran rivers.

Just an hour out of the city of Jaen, and another hour by horse, you can find
villages as isolated as Montegrande. This kind of places is amazing, although it
hurts somewhat to realize. the Rondas. In these places, there are the Village
organizations, responsible for security and justice, as the state doesnt exactly
have a positive presence in these forsaken areas.

How to forget these forests, where, my family and me happened the most
happy moments and enjoyed to the maximum what the wise nature offered us.
Actually I study in the Jaen National University. But, When I will finish my
professional career, I think in going to Jaen to work, because my family live
there and because it a perfect place to make a living.

Another place that is worth a visit is The Almendral Hot Springs, that place is
next to The Huamcabamba River, it is a perfect place to have a simply relax.

Other place that I suggest that you should visit is Hermogenes Mejia Solf
Museam, It was founded in 1971 by the Pedagogic Superior Institute called
Victor Andres Belaunde. Nowadays thanks to the contribution of many teachers
and students of the province, it has been implement. Also the museam has the
most ancient cave paintings made by the brave Pukamurus.

History and Taradition.

Firstly Jan History shows us its ancestors, the same ones that were very
important.

How to forget the heroism of his martyrs, who were defending and vigorous
men of their land.

Secondly Jan has a rich and varied culture, so there is plenty to see and do.
Also it has a rich history in human values, it reflects in its brave men called
Pukamurus, who are symbol of bravery, goodness, courage and patriotism,
they have never been subjugated neither by the Tupac Yupanqui Incas Force,
as the same by the Spanish Force.

Therefore the word Pukamuru means men painted red, but when the Spanish
conquerors came to Peru made out the term Pukamurus as the sound
Bracamoros.

On the other hand, according to the Spaniard Pedro Cieza de Len the term
Pukamuru would be a despective term for the native people of that region. The
native people of this region refused the Inca Conquest thats why, they were
called Indios Rabudos by the incas. Also they only dressed with wild animals
fur.

In addition they had a deepth tradition, they were happy to share everything that
the Wise Nature offered them.

4.3.1. Instruments, music and dances

a) La Cervatana, it is a wooden instrument. It is a long tube, one

of the opposite ends is wide, while that another opposite end is
close, it is used with a poisonous nib. There wasnt any wild animal
or person that could resist it.

b) El Pututo: It is a wooden instrument, which is used for calling

and meeting the community, this instrument sounded strongly.

c) Music and dances: The happiness is present in their dances.

The best dance is La Danza de los Bracamoros its a
representative dance of my land. In this dance the Pukamurus men
express their liberation from Incas.
If you observe this dance, you will can see the conflict between
Pukamurus and Incas. At the end of the dance the winner group
celebrate their triumph with a very loud voice, and dance under the
form of a circle. Finally they leave the scene carrying the corpses of
the defeated leaders, thats a symbol that express Pukamuru power.

d) Traditional dishes: Jan has a varied of traditional dishes, such
