WORKSHOP REPORTS
Drypoint Printing with Joan Mullarvey
For a one day session, Joans April workshop was
very busy and productive. Joan was very generous
and clear, and taught us much about drypoint print-
making; from paper preparation, print layout, mark
making on both acetate and zinc, inking up, blend-
ing inks right down to setting the roller, printing and
presentation. A few participants continued to devel-
op up their work and make new plates over the
next couple of weeks, some of which are now dis-
played at Creators. The excellent skills Joan taught
us will continue to inform our future printmaking
efforts. Lea Casey

Etching Workshops with Basil Hall

Thanks to a grant from Wodonga Council, we were able to have Master Printmaker
Basil Hall come down from his Braidwood studio to run two x two day etching work-
shops - with six people in each workshop. He has a busy schedule - Tiwi Islands
before us and Arnhem Land after - so it was a great opportunity getting him down to
improve our print making skills. Abi was a very
helpful Girl Friday setting up the studio with Basil
and being there over the four days helping out
with everything from paper preparation to cakes
and cuppas!

Basil had a folio of works from numerous high

profile artists to show examples of various etch-
ing methods. We then chose the method to use
on copper plates using a non toxic etching bath.
Hard ground, soft ground, sugar lift, aqua-
tint....so many choices! We were guided through
the two days with suggestions of how to build on
our work, how to combine the methods and
above all not to write anything off - miracles
can happen!

It was great to be able to purchase extra supplies

and to put the studio to full use. Basil found Cre-
ators a light, airy and pleasant space to work in -
in spite of the occasional entanglement with the
microwave! On Tuesday evening after the big
clean up, we laid out the work of the two groups
and got together over a glass of wine; 40 or so
came along, a happy and rewarding finish. It
goes without saying that we would love to have
him back next year.

GALLERY HIRE
The gallery is available for bookings for various dates throughout
2017. Cost is $100 per week, no commission is taken on sales,
conditions apply, email us for further details. The opportunity for
high level exposure occurs when your exhibition coincides with a
Hothouse show, Farmers Market or Gateway Village open day. You
will find the 2017 dates for the Hothouse shows and Farmers Mar-
kets on our website calendar, open days will be posted as soon as
available.

Members are reminded that, when there are no exhibitions on in the

gallery, they are able to hire the space to do artwork of any kind (If
it's messy you have to clean up though!). Cost is $20 per day and
any number of artists may be involved. Our visitors can then see
artists at work as part of their experience at Creators. Studio rates
are $20 per half day and include use of the press and equipment.

COMMITTEE NEWS

The Creators Artspace management committee over the autumn peri-

od had been successful in offering workshops which took place in
March, April and May. All workshops were well attended with an over-
whelming demand for international Master Printmaker Basil Halls ses-
sions. An Autumn Members Exhibition took place in May as did the
Etching Workshops Exhibition.

Upcoming Members Exhibitions will also open in Winter - 19th30th

July, Spring 6th -19th November, and Summer 20th Jan4th Feb
2018. Fundraising ventures and exhibitions are currently being planned
with a view to secure the financial future of Creators Artspace. In keep-
ing with our recent print studio upgrades we have revamped our studio
display area and are awaiting the delivery of new track lighting for the
gallery. The garden at the entrance to Creators Artspace is being re-
planted and a new logo A-frame with branding to read Creators
Artspace Gallery, gift shop, and print studio will advertise our pres-
ence. The UmberElla name has been removed and is to be replaced
with Creators Collective. We are also participating members of the
Gateway Tenants group which meets regularly with the City of Wodon-
ga Council representatives. The tenants group actively plans for the
betterment of our Gateway Village Arts and Cultural Precinct.
