Module 10

How well is the class doing as a whole group? Provide two statements.

The class is doing poorly on the whole. If a C is average, and we consider 75% to be the
average C grade, then the mean for the group should be at right around that value.
However, with a class average of 67.1%, the mean is low, so the normal curve is shifted
unacceptably to the left.

Additionally, since the mean and median are within 1% of each other, we can assume a
fairly good fit to the normal curve. However, that case results in an unacceptable number
of Fs. To correct for this, the grading scale should adjusted to the curve by reducing the
grade ranges from 90-80-70-60-50 to 82-72-62-52-42. This adjustment would result in
only one grade of F, and would reflect student performance better in relation to the group
rather than an arbitrary standard.

If the teacher wishes to retain the standard grading scale, she would need to: improve
teaching or lessen the difficulty of future tests.

Which individuals are doing well and in what topics? Describe at least 3 students.

Only Juan is doing well in all topics, as evidenced by his perfect score.

Cody is also doing quite well, with scores well above mean and median in subtraction
and division. In addition, his score is above the average, and is the median, so he is doing
satisfactory work in that subject.

Of the remaining students, five are above both the mean and median scores in a single
subject. Hugh and Holly are doing well in math, Jamal and Hannah are good at
subtraction and Jack excels in division.

Who may need extra support and on what topics? Describe at least 3 students.

Luke has the lowest score in the class. At 40%, he needs significant assistance, and he
holds that score across all subject areas so he needs overall instruction rather than
targeted assistance in one area.

Nathan is also failing overall, and though his addition and division scores barely qualify
for Ds, his abysmal 20% in subtraction is a substantial drain. He should get intensive
assistance in that area, but he will need assistance in all three.
With grades of 20%, Sarah and Molly need assistance in division and subtraction,
respectively. Both have acceptable marks in addition, but would also require secondary
assistance with subtraction and division, respectively.
