In the article, Shedding light on communication disorders, Alexia Serverson addressed the
following components of communication disorders: speech disorders, language disorders, and
hearing loss. With forty million Americans having some type of communication disorder, this is
a topic that everybody should be aware of. There are many types of speech disorders that can be
found across all ages; articulation, fluency, Dysarthria are the speech disorders highlighted in
this article. Language Disorders is when an individual struggles with receptive and expressive
language; Aphasia is a common language disorder that results from a stroke or brain damage in
adults. Thirty-six million Americans have some type of hearing loss, typically found in one of
the three main categories: conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed hearing
loss. A common misconception of individuals with a communication disorder is that they are
unintelligent; however, this is typically not the case. It is speech language pathologists job to
teach these individuals strategies to help them find their voice. Early intervention is key to ensure
the best future for your child in prevention of a communication disorder.
