Teacher Mrs Morritt Assessment Task 8 Infra-red sensors

STEM Assessment Task 8 Design Brief
Design an introduction to the use of Infra-red temperature sensors for a class

Theme: STEM and Science Inquiry Practical Investigation

Mrs Morritt designed a preliminary Task to introduce you

to the use of the Non-Contact Thermometer with Laser
Targeting, shown in Figure 1. Edith Cowan University
(ECU) loaned these thermometers to us.

In Design Teams collaborate to critically analyse and

improve the design of the initial investigations that we
did in class. Communicate the Design Teams results
and recommendations for improvement to the class.

The class will critically analyse the Team Investigations Figure 1: Non-Contact
to build one Investigation that could be used in a Lower Thermometer
School class to help them understand a concept.

Safety - DO NOT POINT LASER AT ANYONE'S EYES

Background and Uses

Infrared thermometers can be used for a wide variety of temperature monitoring functions.
As a team come to a consensus about the following and list them in Tables 1 and 2 overleaf;
1. List three industrial/ environmental examples and three human examples where Non-
Contact Thermometers with Laser Targeting would be useful.
2. For each example explain why it would be an advantage to use a non-contact thermometer
with laser targeting.
3. List any disadvantages in using a non-contact thermometer with laser targeting rather than
other methods.
4. List the references that the team used. A URL is sufficient in these cases.
5. Feel free to modify the formatting so that it suits the team presentation.

Safety Considerations for working with

Lasers
Bunsen burners
Heating metals
Heating water

Investigation 1: Find the temperature of the Bunsen flames.

Background
1. You drew diagrams of both types of Bunsen burner flame and recorded the temperatures in
three different regions.
2. Use your diagrams and data to summarise the temperatures in three parts of both flames.

Identify problem/s with the method for
finding the temperature of flames.

3. Think about;
a. The reliability in the data gathered.
Discuss factors that may influence
the data.

b. The positioning of the laser to

obtain the temperature reading in
three parts of the flame.

c. The suitability of pointing a sensor

at a flame. Figure 2 may give you
some clues.

d. Record all ideas below in Table 4.

flame or are they?

Brainstorm, Evaluate and Choose a solution to the problem/s outlined in Table 4 above.

4. Develop a prototype solution as to how to find the temperatures of the flames, using the
materials below.
o Laboratory apparatus and materials available:
Bunsen burner, bench mat, gauze, matches, safety goggles, steel sheets and
rods, one Non-Contact Thermometer with the same number as the Design
Team number.
o Discuss any other materials that you may need with your teacher.

Test the solution

Communicate the results of the test below and outline the recommendations of the team for
measuring the temperature of different parts of Bunsen burner flames.
Investigation 2: Find the temperature of a beaker of water as it boils.
Background
You heated 150mL of water in a 250mL beaker beaker set up on a gauze mat and a tripod and
gauze mat and bench protector. The laser was used to trial whether the temperature of water
can be taken through the glass.
The laser was pointed at three different levels of the water and the initial temperature at each
level recorded.
A method to ensure that the temperature was taken at the same place throughout the heating
of the beaker of water was considered.
The Bunsen burner was lit and the water temperature was recorded at the three different levels
at 1 minute intervals.
The results were recorded in a Table.

Identify problem/s with the method of recording water temperature

Brainstorm, Evaluate and Choose a solution to the problem/s outlined in Table 6 above.
5. Develop a prototype solution showing how to find the temperatures of boiling water, using
the materials below.
o Laboratory apparatus and materials available:
Bunsen burner, bench mat, gauze, matches, safety goggles, 250ml beaker,
water, one Non-Contact Thermometer with the same number as the Design
Team number.
o Discuss any other materials that you may need with your teacher.

Test the solution

Communicate the results of the test below and outline the recommendations of the team for
measuring the temperature at different levels whilst heating water.
