INTRODUC TION
FARTI
SPEC IFICATIONS
This Seventeenth Edition of Transportation Materials is published in two parts. This Part l contains specifications
for materials, and Part II includes methods of and specifications for testlng equlPment- Part l contains approxi-
testlng
mately 140 materials specificationsand lO Recommended Practices, of which most contain bothEnglish and Metric
units of measure. Revisions have been made in over 40 of the speciflCations sincethe Sixteenth Edition, two specifications
have been discontinued, and four new standards have been added. A number of specifications have been included in
is publication ate request ofe AASHTO Subcomttee on Bridges and Stmctures-
Many ofthese specifications agree withthose ofthe American Society for Testingand MaterialsASTMl. In
al1 cases wheretheAssociation and ASTM standards are technical1y identical, or substantial1y identical with some
changes, reference tothe ASTM designation number is shown inthe heading ofthe specification.
AASHTO has printed those ASTM standards which have been adopted by AASHTO andgiven
In past editions
anAASHTO designation. This was done under a long-standing copyright arrangement between AASHTOand ASTM.
Since the SixteenthEdition, ASTM has withdrawn a number of its standards from that copyright arrangement, and
accordinglythey do not appearin this Seventeenth Edition. Printing of approximately 40 AASHTO-approved ASTM
specifications was discontinued in this Seventeenth Edition due tothis withdrawal by ASTM. A list ofthe afEected
AASHTO specifications is included followingthe Table of Contents.
Where ASTM has withdrawn a standardomthe former copyright arrangement, only the AASHTO and ASTM
designation numbers are published in this Seventeenth Edition, exceptthat in severalinstances the differences between
the AASHTO specificationandthe related ASTM specification are described. The numerical order ofthe specifications
bas been retained.
ASTM has extendedthe courtesy of permitting AASHTO to publish certain other ASTM specifications, as
underthe former arrangement. mose ASTM specificationsare included in this SeventeenthEdition.
General jmisdiction overAssociation standards inthis field rests with the AASHTO Highway Subcomittee
on Materials, which has members representlng eaCh ofthe 50 States, the Corrmonwealths of Puerto Ricoand the District
of Columbiathat constitute the Member Departments of theAssociation, andthe uS. Department of Transportation. In
addition, the Subcomittee has representationfrom several of itsAssociate Members, includingthe Massachusetts
MetropolitanDistrict Comission, the Port Authorityof New York and New Jersey, the Bureau of lndianAffairs, and
the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Forest Service. AIso represented onthe Subcomittee are most oftheAssociation,s
Afrlliate Members from other nations, includingthe Canadian Provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick,
Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewanand British Columbia, andthe Northwest Territories. Two additional
Afr11iate Members represented arethe NorthernMariana lslands, andthe Korea Highway Corporation.
Beginnlng in 1 993 with the SixteenthEdition, material specificationsand test methods are published by AASHTO
each year. The pnntlng Of this SeventeenthEdition was delayed due to changes in the copyrightarrangement between
AASHTOand ASTM,andthe need for AASHTO to substantial1y revise this edition before publication. Annualrevisions
are voted upon by theAssociation,s 52 Member Departments pnor tothe publication of each new edition of this book,
and if approved by at least twothirds of the Member Departments they are included in the edition as standards of
the Association.
Criticisms ofthese specificationsare welcomedand should be addressed tothe Executive Director of AASHTO,
444 NorthCapitoI Street, N.W., Suite 249, Washington, D.C. 20001.
