HE capital of Japan is a happy, exciting place, with tonnes
of cheap and free things to do. Start with a free guided
tour led by volunteers and become familiar with

Stroll through the vast green spaces and foliage of Meiji Jingu
and neighbouring Yoyogi Park; the latter featuring cosplay at times,
which makes for a great evening. Tsukiji fish market is a must-see,
and the best time is early morning. A session at the relatively cheap

fun, Sydney has it all. Now, Sydney is an expensive city, 1
but it also offers free attractions like the lovely Art Gallery
of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary 2
Art: feed your soul, people. And, of course, you must visit the
beaches: Bondi, Manly, Watsons Bay, Bronte, Coogee... we say visit
them all! There are also free walking tours with local guides, which

Kerala is a favourite with international
visitors, but it can be as interesting
as it is affordable.
Walk through one of Indias oldest Jewish
quarters, Mattancherry, and visit the Dutch
Palace and the Synagogue. Believed to be
Indias oldest European church, St Francis,
built by Portuguese Franciscan Friars,
the Santa Cruz Basilica and Fort Immanuel
are all worth visiting. The Dutch Cemetery
is a quiet, lovely spot for a break in your
day. Fort Kochis beach, with its iconic
giant Chinese fishing nets, is lovely
in the mornings and evenings. Plan to visit
the nearby Vasco da Gama Square and
Maritime Museum along with Fort Kochi.
The Kerala Folklore Museum is a must-

WHEN TO GO: October to February is the best
time Kochi is less humid then and its tropical
climate is relatively cooler, with occasional showers.
If you like the rain, July to September, the non-tourist
season, is a better bet, with lower prices.

and street food possibly the best 100 bucks
youll ever spend.
TIP: Avoid being there on a weekend because
the locals enjoy their city on that day and the carts
at Fort Kochi play really loud music.

INGED by coral beaches and sapphire ocean, Zanzibar
is pretty much the jewel in Africas crown. The main
island in the archipelago, Zanzibar, has history,
culture, natural beauty and so much more. This tiny
island is blessed with superlative beaches: Jambiani, with its
beautiful coral reef, Pongwe, which is said to be the best beach
on the island, and rustic Matemwe where you can swim all day,
regardless of tides. Theres also a wealth of wildlife, like at Jozani
Forest with its endemic red colobus monkeys, as well as dolphins
and the most vibrant sea life (` 650/ person with a guide).
In the centre is Stone Town, with its medieval ambience
and labyrinthine alleyways a walk through here is exciting,
with ornate doors surprising you every now and then. When
in town, shop for spices, for which Zanzibar is justly famous,
at the Darajani Market theyre so cheap, youll feel like an ancient
trader. Take the rest of the afternoon off at, yes, you guessed it,

more beaches Bweju and Nungwi, where you can swim and frolic,
or try a snorkelling day-trip to the Mnemba Atoll with its clear
