steel water storage tank in accordance with AWWA D100-05 including Section 13
for seismic design. Contractor shall provide the steel tank, pipe connections,
manways, ladders, hatches, vents, water level indicator, and other appurtenances
shown on the drawings and specifications.
C. DESIGN INFORMATION
1. The tank dimensions (feet) and capacity (in millions of U.S. gallons - MG) are as
follows:
Flat Bottom
6. Earthquake design: Per AWWA D100-05 Section 13 and Part 1 (D) of this
specification.
10. Allowable soil bearing pressure for supporting loads imposed by interior
columns shall be psf (exclusive of the weight of water).
11. Allowable soil bearing pressure for supporting loads imposed by ring footing
shall be psf (including the weight of water).
12. Design shall comply with AWWA D100-05. Alternative rules and design
stresses in Section 14 be utilized.
D. SEISMIC DESIGN
Design the steel tank in accordance with AWWA D100-05, Section 13, for flat-
bottom tanks. Design based on the following criteria:
2. Site Class:
3. Freeboard shall be
E. SUBMITTALS
A. ACCESSORIES
2. Roof columns: Column base plates shall be welded to the bottom plates.
3. Shell Manways: Provide two (2) 30" diameter Monobolt Manways with
stainless steel interior davit assembly and self positioning u-shaped gaskets.
Manways shall have provisions for locking. Stainless steel components
inside the tank shall be electrically isolated from the tank.
4. Ladders:
b. Provide a type 304 stainless steel inside ladder with a type 304
stainless steel Saf-T-Climb assembly including removable section.
Provide stainless steel storage brackets mounted on the tank roof for
the removable Saf-T-Climb extension. The inside ladder and safety
climb shall be electrically isolated from the tank.
5. Size of posts and rails and the height of guardrail assemblies shall comply
with applicable state and federal regulations and AWWA D100-05. Roof
guardrails shall be provided at the locations and to the extent shown on the
drawings.
6. Provide one (1) 39" square roof hatch in accordance with AWWA D100.
Hinges shall be stainless steel.
7. Provide one (1) 37" diameter mushroom type roof vent with removable lid.
Vent design shall conceal the screens from horizontal exposure. The vent
shall be outfitted with an 8 mesh bronze insect screen held in place with a
stainless steel clamping system.
8. All nuts and bolts in the roof structure system shall be hot dip galvanized. All
nuts shall be free of grease and oil.
9. Overflow: Provide a weir inlet with overflow pipe as shown on the drawings.
10. Level gauge: Provide a Varec Model 2500 automatic tank gauge as shown
on the drawings.
12. Provide one (1) 20 double flanged inlet/outlet shell nozzle as shown on the
drawings.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
A. ERECTION
B. RADIOGRAPHY
The tank contractor shall be responsible to radiograph the tank in accordance with
AWWA D100-05 and Section 14, if Section 14 was used in the tank design. A
complete radiography package including x-ray film and Radiographic Report shall be
submitted to the owner's representative.
C. VACUUM TEST
After the tank is completed and before it is painted, the welded seams in the tank
bottom shall be tested in accordance with AWWA D100-05 section 11.10.1.2.
D. TANK COATINGS
Interior and exterior tank coatings shall be applied in accordance with "Protective
Coatings for Welded Steel Reservoirs".
E. DISINFECTING
Once the reservoir is completely filled it shall sit for a period of 24 hours. If no leaks
are present, the tank has satisfactorily passed the hydrotest. If repairs are required,
G. WARRANTY
The reservoir shall be deemed accepted when the reservoir has been proven free
from leaks and other defects to the satisfaction of the Owner. The acceptance by
the Owner of the completed work as herein specified is subject to the Contractor's
warranty for the completed work against defects in materials or workmanship
furnished by the Contractor for a period of one (1) year from the date of acceptance
of the work.
***END OF SECTION***
The following design criteria must be added to the above document to make it a complete
tank specification. These pages have been included for convenience and may be used as
a checklist to help complete all necessary information. Standard criteria are listed and may
be used unless special considerations are necessary for your project.
Page 1 Part 1 C.1. Insert the tank dimensions. Tank dimensions are generally
specified to one foot increments.
Page 1 Part 1 C.2. Insert the desired bottom thickness. AWWA standard is 1/4".
Page 1 Part 1 C.3. Insert the minimum roof plate thickness. Commonly specified
minimum is 3/16".
Page 1 Part 1 C.4. Tank roof may be a standard cone type or a knuckle type roof.
Insert one of the following phrases: "with a 3 inch eave
projection at the junction" or "with a 3 ft. radius knuckle
transition".
Page 1 Part 1 C.5. AWWA D100-05 only requires that the roof plates be welded on
the top side of the lap joints. Alternately, the roof plate lap joints
may be seal welded on the underside of the joints. Insert one of
Page 1 Part 1 C.7. Insert the desired design live load for the roof. AWWA standard
is 15 psf unless special loads or snow loads are required.
Page 1 Part 1 C.8. In special wind regions the basic wind speed shall be specified
if larger than the basic wind specified in AWWA D100-05.
Insert one of the following phrases: "calculated in accordance
with Sec. 3.1.4 of AWWA D100-05 or XXX mph where XXX is
the wind speed that you specify.
Page 2 Part 1 C.9. Insert the lowest one-day mean ambient temperature from
Figure 23 in AWWA D100-05 or local weather bureau.
Page 2 Part 1 C.10. Insert the allowable soil bearing pressure for column loading.
This value will be used for base plate design and should be
exclusive of the weight of the water (allowable pressure to
support the column load)
Page 2 Part 1 C.11. Insert the allowable soil bearing pressure for ring footing
loading. This value will be used for design of the tank
foundation supporting the shell.
Page 2 Part 1 D.1. Insert Seismic Use Group from Sec. 13.2.1 of AWWA D100-05.
Page 2 Part 1 D.3. Freeboard is the distance provided between the MOL and the
lowest level of roof framing. The freeboard can be as
calculated by AWWA D100-05 or the amount of freeboard can
be specified. Be aware that calculated values of freeboard
under D100-05 rules are generally about 3 to 5 times greater
than under the previous edition. (See AWWA D100 96 Section
13.5.4.4 for specific requirements).
Page 2 Part 1 D.4. Insert "yes" or "no". Seismic design of the roof structure is
generally specified when the particular site conditions warrant
special seismic design considerations.
