Mendels 4th Postulate

Mendels 4th postulate applies when one is following multiple traits. His 4 th postulate is known as the
Principle of Independent Assortment. In his 4 th postulate, it states that during gamete formation,
segregation of pairs of genes, these pairs of genes assort independently of each other such that two or
more pairs of contrasting traits are inherited independently, this allows one to predicts the F2
phenotypes using the product law or simply the multiplication of probabilities. For example if we have a
heterozygote pea (WwGg), that is heterozygote at the locus for round shape and yellow color, when it
undergoes meiosis it will produce the following gametes in equal proportion: WG, Wg, wG, and wg. The
gametes will carry all possible combinations of the unit factors in equal frequency. This goes back
meiosis, where in where in meiosis I the homologous chromosomes line up and they separate to
opposite poles.
