MAPROM WATERLUBRICATED PROP. SHAFT PRINCIPLES Please note basic principles for the Maprom Water lubricated propeller shaft installations. > v v NEVER USE grease /oil in and near the water lubricated propeller shaft seals. The shaft(liners) should be thoroughly degreased and cleaned before seal installation. Make sure there is WATER FLOW when the propeller shaft is rotating so that the seals are water lubricated. Never rotate shaft without water flow {also required for water lubricated bearings!) Regularly clean filters (if installed). Make sure there is ALWAYS PRESSURE on the seals (0,5 bar nominal) when the propeller shafts are rotating so that the stern tube seal has pressure. The pressure at the seal should not exceed 0,8 bar) Maprom Seals and Bearings can operate well in seawater, freshwater and or brackish water. It is not necessary for the seals and bearings to use additives like Glycol in the closed lubrication system. In case no anti-freeze additives are used, drain the lubrication system at dry-docking in 1e. Max. glycol additives should not exceed 20%. Some glycol / influence the seal performance. Carefully follow this manual for smooth operation. Abrasive particles in the lubrication water will increase the wear rate of the seal Shaft (liner) on which the sealing elements are mounted, should be corrosion resistant Shaft(liner) roughness should be Ra=0,4 to 0,8 um, tolerance h8 Perpendicularity of shaft to sealing surface should not exceed 0.02" Disrespect of these basic principles WILL HARM the good functioning of the system. NEVER USE GREASE, OIL OR OTHER LUBRICANTS AT INSTALLATION | STORE SEAL DARK AND DRY AT A CONSTANT TEMPERATURE. 41 INTRODUCTION This chapter covers description, installation, operation and maintenance of the MAPROM GS IS Forward propeller shaft seal For a correct installation and operation of the MAPROM GS IS Forward propeller shaft seal Please make sure that the persons who will install, operate and maintain this equipment read this manual. We reserve the right to change the text of this manual as regards content. 4.2 GENERAL INFORMATION ‘The MAPROM GS IS Forward propeller shaft seal is designed to operate as a seal in open and closed water lubricated stern tubes. The seal function is to prevent ingress of water from the stern tube. The seal assembly consists of split design internal seal components to permit service and maintenance around the shaft without shaft removal. The seal permits seal element replacement with the ship waterbome. Enough maintenance space must be provided in the engine room outfitting design. ‘The MAPROM GS IS Forward prope ler shaft seal consists ofthe following components: Housing (GSIS) O-ring (O-RING) Cover (GSD) ‘Stern tube gasket rubber (seal) element) (GSEV) Mounting bas garter spring ) ST = ERRRET aS ET \S inflatable seal (GSik)_[Airvaivo * defiation cap ‘The MAPROM GS IS Forward propeller shaft seal is designed to allow a radial movement of the shaft, within certain limits. The limit for eccentricity is depending on shaft (liner) diameter size with a maximum of approx. +/- 3 mm for shaft (liner) diameter 100 mm to max 8 mm for 1050 mm from the centre line of the shaft, Split line of cover in this case must be mounted horizontally for internal bypass functioning well. (see information on GS-IS-LAYOUT-3) The seal element is blocked between housing and gland ring (cover). In principle it allows a “slow! low frequency unlimited” axial movement, as long as there is no change in shaft (liner) diameter and shafi(iner) surface quality, for shaft installation/movement purposes. "Fast / higher frequency shaft movements” as a result of flexible engine/gear mountings, might negatively influence the sealing function ‘The seal element is clamped onto the shaft (liner) or shaft liner with a garter spring and rotates with the shaft during operation. When the shaft turns, the seal element makes a sliding contact with the (inside) counter running surface of the caver. This is where the actual sealing takes place. Consequently shaft wear is eliminated. Since water is transported to the forward side of the ‘sealing lips on purpose to create water-lubrication, the seal can show water “leakage at front cover side. Maximum water leakage is 15 drops / minute. During running in time this can be more. ‘Testing of the leakage level to be done after 50 hours of run-in operation ‘The inflatable seal ring, inside the housing, is designed to provide a factor of safety. The inflatable seal ring isin contact with the shaft (liner) surface only when itis inflated. This will seal the shaft (liner) with the ship waterborne. The rubber seal element can be replaced and the running surface of the cover can be re-machined or replaced without dry- docking the ship. The advised pressure of the air seal ring is 2 bar with a maximum of 4 bar. Pls also note that the GS IS seal housing can be vertically split from 400 mm shaft dia onwards and that the inflatable ‘emergency seal air valve is positioned in the 4 to 6 ‘o clock position ‘The shaft must be at rest (and preferably blocked by shaft break, else IS will be seriously damaged) before inflating the inflatable ring. NEVER inflate the air seal ring without shaft (liner) inside. NEVER run the shaft with Inflatable service se: INFLATED and or dismount the air valve. ‘The standard water inlet of the MAPROM GS IS Forward propeller shaft seal is sufficient for water lubricated bearings in standard situations. 4.3 INSTALLATION DIMENSIONS See the accompanying shaft seal drawing for the correct dimensions For a correct installation take notice of the following information; ‘+ The over length of the shaft liner, necessary for installation of the seal, is the total length of the seal plus approximate 50 mm, + Keep appropriate space for maintenance and installation works. Required space to be at least ‘1'mlength in axial direction + The advised tolerance of the shatt (liner) is h8 according ISO. ‘+ The maximum surface finish for the shaft (liner): Ra 1,6 um. The shaft (liner) material must be corrosion resistant, clean and degreased at sealing element position. ‘+ The pressure of the water lubrication must be 0,75 bar at seal entrance (0,5 bar minimum, 1,0 bar maximum), + The flow of the water lubrication in accordance with the data of the water lubricated bearings of the stem tube ‘+ The angular misalignment of the seal is restricted to be max. 0.02° with regards to the cenitreline of the shaft (Axially measured on the outside diameter of seal housing-stem tube ‘mounting surface. This should not exceed 0,2 mm around the mounting surface) + Be sure that after installation of the seal, the entire seal and the air valve of the inflatable air seal ring can be reached for maintenance. 44 RECOMMENDED MATERIALS = Bolts stainless steel AIS! 304 or 316 (see drawing), DINO33, + Cleaning solvent (seal, O-ring): Loctite 7031 + Adhesive (sealing element, O-ring) : Loctite 416 + Liquid seal Loctite 5926 45 SPARE PARTS ‘Maprom Engineering B.V. normally does have spares on stock. We advise to check the status of stock before starting the repair / revision of the shaft seal. We do advise to have spare parts on board of the vessel to assure an adequate repair at the Proper time when necessary. ‘The main spare parts are: ‘a. rubber sealing element with bronze spring: GsEV b. bronze cover: GsD ©. Since this water-flm only will be created during and by operation (rotation) ofthe shaff, this will be the first time the seal will have adequate lubrication and be able to find its ideal position. Direct after installation the seal can show some water-drops (<15 drops per minute) because not being in its ideal position. Aso during filing and first operation air-bubbles in the system can disturb the sealing function It is therefore most essential to allow a running in period for the shaft-seal of at least 50 running hours in normal operation. Ifthe system shows more then 15 drops per minuto after first installation and before running in itis wise to repeat the installation procedure and check every step very carefully. 4.10 OPTIONAL EXTRA SPARE SEAL ‘A spare seal (rubber sealing element GSEV) can be placed around the shaft (liner) and can be used as spare sealing element This spare sealing element is intended to be installed around the shaft (liner) before the forward, shaft seal and can immediately be used when service or maintenance requires a new sealing ‘element without the necessity to ‘vulcanise a new GSEV element. Install this seal around the shaft (liner) well protected. Damages will lead to failures in functioning of this part. Page 14 ~ A "| * Do not unpack this sealing element prior to replacement Install the seal around the shaft (iiner) before the forward shaft seal with the face-iis at engine side (as it should be installed normally) Do not damage the seal. Be careful when removing the protection from the rubber sealing element. Keep sharp tools / parts away from face-lips at forward side.
