3 Mireille Girard, UNHCR Representative for Lebanon and former
Representative for UNHCR in Thailand, explains intense
3 Syrian refugee situations in Lebanon. Lebanon currently
hosts over onemillion refugees from Syria who have been
4 living over five years in exile. The number has been increasing
at large scale since 2011; from 15,000 to a million people
within sixyears. They have lost almost everything and over
70% live under the poverty line and struggle to survive. One of
UNHCRs core assistance is to provide safe shelter as it is a
criticallife-savinginterventionin times of displacement.Winter
can be very cold in Lebanon. It is also key to restoring personal
security, self-sufficiency and dignity. However, with the limited
budget, UNHCR has to prioritizeits assistanceto the most
vulnerable groups such as families with very smallchildren,
single mothers and persons with disability or chronic diseases.

UNHCR Various stories of Syria refugees who forced to live under

10 inadequate shelter in Lebanon. A millions of refugees are
struggling to get by in inadequate and often dangerous
dwellings, barely able to pay the rent, and putting their lives,
dignity and futures at risk. Therefore a shelter is needed for
UNHCR
refugees to survive and recover from the physical and mental
effects of violence and persecution.
