DESCENT wns se INITIATE,
The normal method of nitiating the descent sto select DES mode atthe FMGS calculated tp of
descent (T/D)
If ATC requires an early descent:
Use DES mode which wil guide the aireraft down at alower vertical speed in order to converge
‘on the required descent path. (The pilt may use a VIS of 000 fein).
If ATC delays the descent:
Beyond TD, the PFD and the MCDU display either ‘DECELERATE” or "TD REACHED"
message, Tis suggests tothe crew tht it starts reducing speed towards green dot speed (with
[ATC permission). When cleared to descend, select DES made with managed speed active.

When tying in NAV mode, use DES mode
The airraft descends along the descent fight path: the PFD and PROG page display VDEV, and
‘0 can be monitored. All constraints ofthe fight plan are taken into account forthe guidance.
When the aircrattis fying in HDG or TAK mode, and thus out of the lateral FPLN, DES mode is
rot avaiable
The NDs show alovel.of symbol along the ight path ts poston is based onthe curent active
‘modes APFD and ATHR
The fight crew can use this symbol to monitor the descent
MCDU predictions assume a retum tothe lateral F-PLN and descent fight path,
Note that whenever the lateral mode i changed from NAV to HDG/TRK the vertical mode reverts
to ViS atthe vale pertaining atthe time ofthe mode change.
From tie to time during stabilzed descent, the fight crew may select FPA to check that the
remaining distance to destination is approximately the alttude change required divided by the FPA
in degrees.

~ Maintain high speed as long as possible. (SPD LIM may be suspended, subject to ATC.
learance),
~ Ifthe airratis high and at high speed, its more ecient to Keep the high speed to ALT* and
decelerate ather than to mix descent and deceleration
~ Ifthe airrat goes below the desired profile, use SPEED and the VIS mode to agust the rate of
descent.
