1 ALLIED BANK
1.1 Introduction:

Allied Bank Limited was the first bank to be established in Pakistan. The Bank started
out in Lahore by the name Australasia Bank before independence in 1942; and became
Allied Bank of Pakistan in 1974. In August 2004, because of capital reconstruction, the
Banks ownership was transferred to a consortium comprising Ibrahim Group; therefore,
it was renamed as Allied Bank Limited in 2005.

Today, with its existence of over 70 years, the Bank has built itself a foundation with a
strong equity, assets and deposit base. It offers universal banking services, while
placing major emphasis on retail banking. The Bank has a large network of 1000 online
branches in Pakistan and offers various technology-based products and services to its
diverse clientele.
ABL is the first Muslim Bank established on territory that later on became Pakistan. It
was established on December 3, 1942 as Australasia Bank at Lahore with capital of
0.12 million. At that time the chairman was Kh. Bashir Baksh. ABLs story was one of
the dedication, commitment to professionalism and adaptation to changing
environmental changes.
The bank's history is divided into many phases. During 25 years of united Pakistan the
bank advanced forward in all areas of its activities. 1970s were a difficult decade for all
Banks of Pakistan. In 1971 East Pakistan was separated and Australasia Bank lost its
50 branches and a lot of capital as well. Nevertheless, the growth remained steady.
In 1974 all the Banks were nationalized including Australasia Bank. The small provincial
Banks were merged into Australasia Bank. On 1 July 1974 the new entity was renamed
as ABL of Pakistan Limited. Then it started its operations as Public sector financial
institution.

CSR commitments include focus on main areas namely:

Healthcare

1.6 Basic Principles in Islamic Morality

The Islamic moral system stems from its primary creed of belief in One God as the
Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. Islam considers the human race to be a part of
Gods creation, and as His subjects.
From an Islamic perspective, the purpose of human life is to worship God, by leading
this worldly life in harmony with the Divine Will, and thereby achieve peace in this world,
and everlasting success in the life of the hereafter. Muslims look to the Glorious Quran
and the Traditions of the Prophet as their moral guides.

The Glorious Quran says:

(It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces Towards east or West; but it is
righteousness- to believe in Allah and the Last Day, and the Angels, and the Book, and
the Messengers; to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for your kin, for
orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of
slaves; to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts
which ye have made; and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and adversity, and
throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the Allah-fearing. [Al-
Quran 2:177] )

11 | P a g e
1.7 Morality and the individual

The guiding principle for the behavior of a Muslim is what the Quran refers to as Al
`Amal Assalih or virtuous deeds. This term covers all deeds, not just the outward acts of
worship.
Some of the most primary character traits expected of a Muslim are piety, humility and a
profound sense of accountability to God. A Muslim is expected to be humble before God
and with other people. Islam also enjoins upon every Muslim to exercise control of their
passions and desires.
Morality and Society

For an individual as well as a society, morality is one of the fundamental sources of

strength, just as immorality is one of the main causes of decline. While respecting the
rights of the individual within a broad Islamic framework, Islam is also concerned with
the moral health of the society.
Thus, everything that leads to the welfare of the individual and the society is morally
good in Islam, and whatever is harmful is morally bad

1.8 Suggestion:

Being a Muslim, I suggest that the education of needy students is social responsibility
so according to the rules of corporate social responsibility at the allied bank must fulfill
this responsibility . Morality in Islam addresses every aspect of a Muslims life. Allied
bank must work more and more for corporate social responsibility so that the social
welfare must be fulfill.

2.5 Corporate Social Responsibility

A Primary School of Good Standard

Run on subsidized basis, it offers good quality education for the children of Mirwah
Gorchani at nominal cost.

A Medical Complex and School

AASML has provided financial aid to a Foundation to develop a school and medical
complex spread over approximately 20 acres. Apart from the objective of improving the
education and health standards of the youth in the area, AASML would like the area to
develop into small model town in the interior Sindh.

Plans are afoot for providing the people of the town with the above facilities for their
educational personal development and social uplift.

The Management of Al-Abbas Group is dedicated for organizing the workplace (and
living conditions where appropriate) so that employees can work effectively and safely.
Al-Abbas Group has recently launched a Hepatitis awareness & vaccination campaign
to reduce the risk of the spread of the dangerous disease among its employees.

2.7 Ethics and islam

Charity is one of the most commendable acts in Islam. In fact, Zakah, the annual charity
that is obligatory on every Muslim who has accrued wealth above a certain level.

Morality in Islam addresses every aspect of a Muslim's life, starting with as simple as a
smile that counts as charity all the way up to defending the oppressed, from simple
greetings to international relations. It is universal in its scope and in its applicability.

18 | P a g e
The prophet Muhammad (saws) said:

"I have been sent to perfect the morals". The Quran is the criterion (furqan).
Anything that contradicts the Quran is not from Islam.

From an Islamic perspective, the purpose of human life is to worship God, by leading
this worldly life in harmony with the Divine Will, and thereby achieve peace in this world,
and everlasting success in the life of the hereafter. Muslims look to Noble Qur'an and
the Traditions of Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) as their moral guides. Muslims believe
that true happiness occurs when you are God-conscious and submissive to God's will.
Freedom is freedom from human desires and man-made ideals. Through prayer and
fasting, self-discipline and self-control become a focus of many Muslims. This also is a
foundation for human dignity

2.8 Suggestions

I suggest that as al-Abbas sugar mill is providing a complete atmosphere of ethics and
corporate social responsibility and others must fulfill their goals by helping social people
and become profitable for needy society .but al-Abbas sugar mill is needed some kind
of mosques at a small level so that the Islamic values can fulfill . al Abbas sugar mill
must also work for park benches (sitting places) and some kind of benefit for sugar
cane owners who provide the sugarcane to al-Abbas sugar mill.

But CSR is for greatest benefit for greatest people and a revolutionary step for society.

reason; assigning of partners to Allah, for which He hath given no
authority; and saying things about Allah of which ye have no
knowledge. [Al-Quran 7:33]

EDUCATION

Schools & Clinics Support Program

PARCOs cross country pipeline network and the Mid-Country Refinery makes us next-
door neighbor to many remote and underprivileged communities. Since 2007, PARCO
conducts an extensive Schools and Clinics Support Program which aims at improving
the education and health infrastructure in adjoining communities by supporting Rural
Health Centers, Basic Health Units, Primary, Middle and Secondary Schools, being run
by Government of Pakistan.
Under this program, PARCO has provided assistance in kind to around 89 Government
institutions with 71 schools and 18 clinics along the pipeline, close to the stations and
Mid-Country Refinery. More than 36,000 children are receiving education in PARCO
supported schools. PARCO`s assistance to these institutions has raised communities`

24 | P a g e
interest to enroll their children in these refurbished and well-maintained schools
diverting them from child labor to primary education, raising the literacy rate.
The program is an ongoing initiative during which more government schools and clinics
are being identified and previous ones revisited. We want to assure communities that
PARCO is there for help when they need it most. The feedback received from the
recipient communities has been overwhelming. PARCOs CSR program has given life to
the communities in scores of remote villages.

VOCATIONAL TRAININGS & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In the realm of CSR, PARCO has always believed in inculcating self-reliance

capabilities amongst the Pakistani youth. PARCO and its subsidiaries have been
supporting many well-known institutions working in the area of vocational trainings
during the past several years.
In the first phase, Company went a step further by searching for deserving Vocational
Training Institutes (VTIs) in rural areas, nearby PARCO facilities and identified various
centers at Machike, Faisalabad, Kot Addu, Mahmoodkot, Qasba Gujrat, Muzaffargarh,
DG Khan, Multan, Fazilpur, Shikarpur, Bubak and Karachi.
The basic objective in supporting these vocational training centers is to enhance skills
amongst the youth and especially women of Pakistan. The vocational trainings
pertaining to sewing and embroidery will help the rural women in achieving self-
sustenance through entrepreneurship. This act further reassures PARCOs support to
the Ten Principles of UN Global Compact and Women Empowerment Principles.

several Basic and Rural Health Centers based in small villages nearby PARCO cross-

longer required to travel for long hours to the cities for basic treatment.

PARCO Community Welfare Clinic

PARCOs Mid-Country Refinery (MCR) at Qasba Gujrat is surrounded by many

underprivileged communities, who are deprived of the basic education and health
facilities. PARCO operates a Community Welfare Clinic, providing basic health facilities

5.4 Islamic ethics

Islamic ethics defined as "good character," historically took shape gradually from the
7th century and was finally established by the 11th century. It was eventually shaped as
a successful amalgamation of the Qur'anic teachings, the teachings of
the Sunnah of Muhammad, the precedents of Islamic jurists (see Sharia and Fiqh),
the pre-Islamic Arabian tradition, and non-Arabic elements
(including Persian and Greek ideas) embedded in or integrated with a
generally Islamic structure. Although Muhammad's preaching produced a "radical
change in moral values based on the sanctions of the new religion and the present
religion, and fear of God and of the Last Judgment", the tribal practice of Arabs did not
completely die out. Later Muslim scholars expanded the religious ethic of the Qur'an
and Hadith in immense detail.
