14 (B) Glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells is increased by increased plasma arginine levels.
Glucagon opposes the actions of insulin and increases blood glucose by increasing gluconeogenesis and
glycogenolysis. Secretion is also stimulated by hypoglycemia. Insulin and somatostatin decrease
glucagon secretion.

15 (A) Progesterone-mediated relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter smooth muscle is believed to


increase the frequency of esophageal reflux and, thus, the sensation of heartburn. Progesterone may
also relax gastric and colonic smooth muscle resulting in gastroparesis and constipation, respectively.
Estrogens cause marked peripheral vasodilation. The resultant decrease in afterload leads to a
compensatory increase in cardiac output.
