The standard cylinder, 300 mm high by 150 mm in diameter (the
height to diameter ratio is constant at 2), is the basic specimen used for testing concrete in Australia. Test cylinder should be compacted, transported, capped, cured and strength-tested in accordance with AS 1012. Effect of the compression test cylinder size upon the compression strength of a specimen, result obtained strength correction factors and relative strength factor are 1,00. Occasionally it will be necessary to use information obtained form a non-standard cylinder (when the height to diameter ratio is less than 2).
An alternative means of determining the compressive strength of
concrete, used in the U.K and some other countries, is the use of 100-150 mm and 200 mm cubes. When using design information from these sources, the designer must be careful to allow for the difference in the strength result obtained from these cubes; for example, data based on a 100 mm cubes strength of 30 MPa relates to a standard cylinder strength of only 25 MPa.
