Kankakee High School has implemented some new options into their Physical Education courses. A grant
of $23,341 was given to them by the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance that will cover the cost of new outdoor education equipment. A survey given to students in 2016
revealed that a high percentage of students dont participate in outdoor activity and a high percent are
overweight. Lead PE teacher, Donya Tetrault, redesigned the PE program to give kids options and allow
them to participate in an activity that interests them. One of the new activities that will be offered is
outdoor education and that will involve teaching kids useful outdoor skills such as, starting a fire, setting
up a tent, kayaking, and even fishing. One of the reasons for including kayaking is because of the
Kankakee River that runs through their town. The teacher Donya Tetrault grew up on the river and she
wanted her PE students to get the same experience.
