There are two main components of psychosocial needs (as cited in Ager, 2009).

These are psychological and social needs. According o Maslow (1943),

psychological needs comprise the 3rd and 4th levels in his hierarchy of needs. These
include the belongingness , love needs, and the esteem needs. Moreover,
psychological problems may arise when these needs are not met. The social need
of an individual which also includes the 3rd level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs
may be put into consideration. Social needs are fulfilled by forging relationships
with other people. Research has revealed that social factors greatly contribute in
managing psychological problems. These problems are reduced when social needs
of an individual in this state are satisfied. With this, the two components are said to
be interrelated to each other.
