{tansmitted twice per encoding sequence to increase security.
“The MC145027 decoder racaives the serial stream and inlorpets tive of the trinary
gts as an address code. Thus, 243 addresses are possible. binary data is used SUFFIX
atthe encoder, 32 addresses are possible. The remaining serial information is inter PLASTIC DP
peted as four bits of binary data. The valid transmission output (VT) goes high on CASE 648
‘the MC145027 when two condtions are mat, Fist, two addresses must be consecu-
tively received (in one encoding sequence) which both match the local address,
Second, tha 4-bits of data must match the last valid data received. The active VT
ingicats that the information atthe data output pins has been updated. pau
‘The MC145028 docader treats al nine trinary digits as an address which allows psoas

19,683 codes. If binary data is encoded, 512 codes are possible. The vald transmis
sion output (VT) goes high on the MC145028 when two addresses are consecutively
recsivad (in one encoding sequence) which both match the local address.

OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS
mc145026
The encoder serially transmits tinary data as defined by the
sate of the At through AS and A8/D6 through AS/D9 input
pins. These pins may bein ether of three statas (ow, high, oF
‘open) allowing 19,683 possible codes. The ransmitsequence
isintisted by alow level on tho TE input pin. Each time the TE
input is forced low, the encoder outputs two identical data
‘words, Between the two data words, ro signalis sentforthree
data pariods. ithe TE input is kept ow, the encoder continu-
‘ously transmits the data word. See Figure 10.
Each ransmited trinay dig is encoded ino pulses (See
Figure 11). A logic 2270 (low) Is encoded as two consecutive
shortpulses, alogicone (high) as two consecutivelong pulses,
and an open (high-impedance) as a long pulse folowed by a
short pulse, The input state is determined by using a waak
“output” davice to ty to force each inpul fist lw, then high, Hf
‘only a high state results from the two tasts, the input is as-
sumedto be hardwired to Vp. Wonly alow stata obtained,
tha nputigassumedtobe hardwiredto Vs. thothahigh and
‘alow can be forced atan input, an opan is assumed andis en.
‘coded as such. Tho “high” and “low” lovels are 70% and 30%
‘ofthe supply voltage as shown inthe Electrical Characteristics
Table, The weak"output device sinks/sources upto 110yAat
45 V suppl love, $00 yA at 10 V, and 1 mAat 15 V.
‘Tho TE input has an internal pulp device so that a simple
‘switch may be used oforce the inputiow. While TEs high, the
‘encodaris completely cisabled, the oscilatoris inhibited, and
the currant drain is reduced to quiascent current. When TEs
‘brought low, the oscilator is started, and the transmit so-
thon sequontialysolocted, and
‘made as tothe input gic states. This in-
formation is sarialy transmitted via the Data Out pin,
mc14so27
‘This dooodar recoives tho sara data from the encodar and
‘outputs the data, consisting
‘of two identical words, e examinedbit by bit during reception,
‘Thotirsttivetinary digits are assumedtobe the address. Hthe
received address matches the local address, nex four (data)
bits are internally stored, bt are not ansferad to the output
data latch. As the second encoded word is received, the ad-
‘dress must again match. Ha match oocurs, the new data bis
fare chockod against the previously stored data bis, Hthe two
nibbles o data (four bits each) match, the dataistranstotredto
the output data laich by VT and remains until new data re-
places @, tthe same time, the VT output pin is brought high
land remains high unl an eroris received or untiing input sig
nals received forfour data periods. See Figure 10.
‘ARhough the address information maybe encoded in tiny,
the data information must be ether aone or a zero, Altinary
(open) data ine is decoded as a logic one.
wc145028
This decoder operates in the same manner as the
MC145027 except that nine address lines are used and ro
data outputs avaiable. The VT outputs used to indicate that
‘vali address has been received. For transmission security,
‘wo identical transmitted words must be consacutvaly re
ceivadbolore avalié transmission output (VT) signals issued.
‘The MC145028 allows 19,683 addresses whon tinary ov
ols aro used. 812 addresses are possible when binary levels,
219 used.

APPLICATIONS INFORMATION
Infrared Transmit
In Figure 16, the MC145026 encoderis settorun at anosci
lator fraquency of about 4 kHz to 9 kHz. Thus, the time re-
Quitedtora complete two-word encoding sequenceis about 20
ms to 40 ms, The data output rom the encoder gates an RC.
‘oscilato running at 50 kHr; the oscilator shown tars rapidly
neugh to be usedinthis aplication. When the “sond” button
is not depressed, both the MC145026 and oscillator are in a
low-power standby stata, The RCoscilator has tobe trimmed
for 50kH2 and has some drawbacks for frequoncy stabil. A
supetior system uses aceramic resonatoroscilator running a
400kH2. This oscilator foods a divider as shown in Figure 17.
‘Tho unused inputs of the MC14011UB must be grounded.
‘The MLEDAt IREDis driven wit tha SOkHz square wave a
bout 200 mA to 300 mA to gonerate the carrot. desired, 2
IREDs wirod in seri can be used. (See Application Note
‘AN1016 or more information.) The bipolar IRED switch shown
in Figure 16 offers two advantagos over a FET. Fist, alogic
FET has too much gate capacitance for the MC14011UB to
drive without waveform distortion. Second, the bipolar dive
permits lower supply votages, which are an advantage in por-
{able battary-powered applications

Infrared Receive
‘The receiver in Figure 18 couples an IR-sensitve diode to
input preamp A1, followed by bandpass ampitier A2 wth a
‘Gainof about 10.’ Limiting stage AS follows, with an output of
About 600 mVp-p. The limited 50 kHz butst is detected by
‘comparator Ad thatpasses only postive pulses, and peak-do-
tected and ftered by a diodefAC network to extract the data
envelope trom the burst. Comparator AS boosts the signal to
logic lavais compatible wih the MC145027/8 data input. The
datainpin of these decodersisa standard CMOS high-imped-
‘ance input which must NOT be alowed otleat. Tharsiore, d
‘tect eouping from AS tothe decoder inputs ulized.
Shiolding should be used on at least At and A2, with good
‘round and high-senstivty circuit layout techniques applied
For operation with supplies higher than +5 V, limiter Ad's
postive output swing needs tobe limited 10 8 VIO SV. This is
‘accomplished via adding a zener diode in the negative
feedback path, thus avoiding excassive systam noise, The
biasing resistor stack shouldbe adjusted such that V3is 1.25 V
t015V.
‘This system works upto @ range of about 10 meters. The
‘gains ofthe systom may be adjusted to suit the individual
sign needs. The 100 02 resistor in tho emitir of tho frst,
2NS088 and the 1 KO resistor foading A2 may be altered
