AmericanmadecommercialspacecraftBoeingsCST100StarlinerandtheSpaceXCrewDragon.These
spacecraftwillallowNASAtoaddaseventhcrewmembertoeachstationmission,effectivelydoublingthe
amountoftimeastronautswillbeabletodevotetoresearchinspace,expandingscientificknowledgeand
demonstratingnewtechnologies.
AstronautsalsowillliftoffagainfromNASAsKennedySpaceCenterinFloridaaboardtheOrionspacecraft,
launchedontheagencysSpaceLaunchSystem(http://www.nasa.gov/sls)rocket,tounprecedented
missionsinlunarorbit.There,thespaceagencywilllearnmoreaboutconductingcomplexoperationsina
deepspaceenvironmentbeforemovingontolongerdurationmissionsasitprogressesonitsjourneyto
Mars.
Tohelpaccomplishthiswork,NASAwillselectqualifiedastronautcandidatesfromadiversepoolofU.S.
citizenswithawidevarietyofbackgrounds,includingengineers,scientistsandphysicians.Accordingtothe
professionalnetworkingsiteLinkedIn,some3millionofthesitesmembersworkingintheUnitedStates
appeartomeettheminimumacademiceligibilityrequirementsforthejob.
NASAsmission,andwhatweneedfromtheastronautshelpingtocarryitout,hasevolvedovertheyears,
saidBrianKelly,directorofFlightOperationsatNASAsJohnsonSpaceCenterinHouston.Somepeople
wouldbesurprisedtolearntheymighthavewhatittakes.Wewantandneedadiversemixofindividualsto
ensurewehavethebestastronautcorpspossible.
Astronautcandidatesmusthaveabachelorsdegreefromanaccreditedinstitutioninengineering,biological
science,physicalscience,computerscienceormathematics.Anadvanceddegreeisdesirable.Candidates
alsomusthaveatleastthreeyearsofrelated,progressivelyresponsibleprofessionalexperience,oratleast
1,000hoursofpilotincommandtimeinjetaircraft.AstronautcandidatesmustpasstheNASAlongduration
astronautphysical.
