193 students get perfect 100% in SSC

Vinamrata Borwankar & Yogita Rao | TNN | Updated: Jun 14, 2017, 11.30 AM IST

Highlights : As many as 193 students have secured a perfect score of 100% in the SSC exams. This
is due to the introduction of 'upto 25 extra marks' for participating and excelling in sports, arts and
culture.

MUMBAI: The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam has thrown up an eye-popping 193 students
with a perfect 100% score. They owe their success to the up to 25 extra marks given for participating
and excelling in sports, the arts and culturethe latter two were introduced this year. Last year, there
were 39 cent percenters when extra marks for sports had made a comeback after a three-year gap.

However, in what could be a big admission worry for the state board students, the overall 90% club has
shrunk to 48,470 students from 51,281 last year; in Mumbai division, the number of high scorers are
down to 10,157 from 11,416. With both CBSE and ICSE recording a rise in the number of high scorers
this year, SSC students could be at a disadvantage when applying to the sought-after junior colleges in
the city.

The state's overall success rate in the SSC examination, including both freshers and repeat candidates,
dipped to 85.7% from 86.4% last year. The results that were announced on Tuesday show that Mumbai
division, which retained its sixth position among the nine state divisions, too, saw its success rate dip
marginally by 0.8% to 84.9% from 85.7% last year.

Despite the additional marks availed of by more than 84,000 students, fewer students scored more than a
first class or 60% this year than in 2016. This year, of the fresh candidates who passed, 59.6% scored a
first class and above compared with 65.3% last year.
"The performance must have dipped slightly but we did not have any major changes in the process. Each
batch is different from the other and hence the performance is bound to vary," said Gangadhar Mhamane,
chairperson of the board. A total of 153 students in the state managed to scrap through with a score of
35%.

While the number of students with a perfect score is five times higher than in 2016, it is much lower
than 262 in 2012 and 464 in 2011, when extra marks for sports were the norm.

Latur and Aurangabad bucked the trend to record a rise in the pass percentage among the nine divisions,
and Konkan maintained its top slot in the state with a success rate of 94.6%.

Officials from Mumbai division, which comprises Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar, blamed the high
number of repeater candidates for the slight drop in performance. In Mumbai, 90.09% of fresh
candidates passed the exam but only 43.3% of the repeaters cleared it. "The number of students are
much higher than in any other division and hence we suffer. However, fresh candidates have done well,"
said Duttatray Jagtap, chairperson of the Mumbai division.

In Mumbai division, Navi Mumbai recorded the best performance with a success rate of 93.7% among
fresh candidates.

The subjects which dragged down scores at several city schools included languages such as Marathi,
science and technology.

Schools will distribute mark sheets on June 24 at 3pm. This year on, when students receive their mark
sheets, they will not have "fail" mentioned on it. The mark sheets of students will now either say passed,
passed with allowed to keep term (ATKT) or eligible for skill development.

As many as 1.08 lakh students who failed in two subjects can benefit from the ATKT scheme of the SSC
board. The repeaters exam will begin on July 18. If students pass the exam, they will be able to join first-
year junior college this year itself.

The trend of girls outperforming boys continued with a pass percentage of 91.5 as against 86.5 posted by
the boys. While 9.03 lakh boys gave the exam, there were 7.4 lakh girls.
