Mr. Grant asks. “No, Carl. You have it,” Mrs. Grant says. ‘They look for the guide book in their bags, then Mr. Grant says,“Oh no, I remember now. It's on a chair near ‘Girl with a Pearl Ear-ring’. My passport is in that book!” Kate gets up quickly. “Stay here.” she says.""I can find it”” Kate runs to the museum. A guard is closing the door. “Stop!” Kate says.“My father’s passport is in the museu “I'm sorry, but we close at five o'clock,” the guard says. A sign on his shirt says,“Paul Van Dyck.” “Please,” Kate says."It' very important.” The guard looks at his watch, then at Kate “OK," he says and smiles.“Come with me.” 4 Kate goes into the museum with Paul Van Dyck. It is dark and there aren't any people in the rooms, “Where is the passport?” Paul asks. “Do you know?” “Yes. Its on a chair near that picture of a girl with an ear-ring,” Kate says They walk for a minute, then Paul Van Dyck stops. “Sshh!” he says, can hear voices.” Kate looks at Paul He isn’t smiling now. Then she hears voices, too. “Be very, very quiet,” Paul says. He takes a phone from his coat pocket, but suddenly there are two men in the room. One is tall and has a big, black bag in his hands. The short man has a gun. They look at Kate and Paul. Kate and Paul look at the men. Time stops. 6 “Put your phone on the floor,” the short man says. “Now!” His voice is cold, “No,” Paul says. Suddenly there is a bang! Paul falls down and says,“ My leg!” Kate looks at him. “Get the girl,” says the tall man. The short man puts his cold hand across Kate's mouth. She is very scared.“*Come with us,” he says. A minute later Kate and the thieves are in a small street behind the museum. They get into a car, and the tall thief, drives very quickly for thirty minutes. The men don’t talk Kate is on the floor. She can see a picture in the black bag, Ic is “Girl with a Pearl Ear-ring”” “Where are we going?” she thinks. Then she looks up and sees a sign. It says,"Amsterdam 10”, 8 At 5.40 the car stops. “Get up,” the short thief says. His voice is very quiet. He opens the car door. The gun is under his coat. “Smile,” he says. Kate is scared but she smiles. There are people in the street. She can see a boat. Its name is the Black Dog. The cold gun is next to her back. The tall thief is behind them with his black bag “Sit down and be quiet!” says the short thief. They are in the Black Dog’s kitchen. It has one small window. Kate sits on a chair, and the men close the door and go, Later, Kate hears their voices. “What do we do now?” the short man says. “We send a note to her family,” the tall thief answers. “They want the girl back. We want money. It isn’t difficult.” 10 Kate is very scared. She looks round the kitchen. Suddenly, she sees a ship in a bottle. There is a pen next to it. Quickly she writes a note, It says:“I’'m on the Black Dog with two thieves. They have ‘Girl with a Pearl Ear-ring’. Call the police! My name is Kate Grant.” Then she puts her note in the bottle. She opens the small window and throws the bottle into the canal re At 9.15 that evening the bottle is a kilometer from the Black Dog. An old man is walking next to the canal. He stops.“A ship in a bottle!” he thinks.““That’ interesting.” He picks the bottle out of the water. Then he sees Kate's note and reads it.“ Thieves!” he thinks. “This is important.” He makes a call.“Hello? Polic he says. He is talking very quickly.“Listen to this.” 2 At 11.25 Kate is trying to sleep in the Black Dog's kitchen. Suddenly her eyes open. She can hear a woman’ voice. “POLICE!” the woman says."Put the gun on the floor That's right. Now put your hands on your head. Quickly!” Then the kitchen door opens. Kate sees three policemen and two policewomen. “It’s OK," one of the policemen says.““"We're here now.” ‘Two days later Kate is in The Hague again with her mother and father. Some TV people are there, tov. The museum's director and Paul Van Dyck are standing next o her. The director smiles.“ Thank you very much, Kate,” he says. Then he gives her a small bag. He lives on a beautiful old boat in Paris. (His home is under the kitchen floor.) He likes books, restaurants and old films. He likes the ~ opera, too. ~ One evening in June; Marcel finishes a detective story. Then he goes to have dinner with some friends. They’ live in the metro station at the Louvre. - After dinner, Marcel waits at the station. He sees two ~ men standing next to him. The tall one is reading a magazine, “Look,” he says, “here she is: ‘Opera star Miss Zaza Dupont with her beautiful one million pound diamond ring - the White Star.” ‘Her’ beautiful diamond ring?” The short man looks at the photo and laughs. “Not after tonight,” he says. 2 Marcel’s mouth opens. “What?! Are the men going to steal Zaza Dupont’s diamond?” He remembers an evening at the opera two weeks before. Zaza’s green dress. The music. The beautiful White Star on her finger. No! They can’t steal it! The train comes and the men get on. Marcel pulls down his hat and follows them. Half an hour later he gets off again at La Mouette station. But there are hundreds of people, and Marcel loses the two men, Then he sees an old mouse. “Excuse me,” he says. “Do you know where Zaza Dupont lives?” But when Marcel finds Zaza’s house, it is too late. “Yes — two men,” she is telling the police on the telephone. “And they've got the White Star.” 4 ‘At that moment Marcel hears a motor start. “Where’s that coming from?” he thinks. Then he sees something at the end of the road. It’s them! It’s the thieves and they’re stealing a car! He runs across Zaza’s garden and down the street. He can see the car’s number- plate. It’s near. Very near. “Can I.. .?” he thinks, and he jumps. Yes!! Marcel sits on the number-plate. “Good,” he thinks. Then, after a second or two... “But what happens now?” The thieves drive across Paris very fast. Marcel can hear them in the car. They are laughing and talking. But Marcel is not laughing. He is very, very angry. After half an hour the car stops next to a café. 6 It is late and the café is quiet. In one corner there is a woman. The thieves sit at her table. Marcel sits under the table and listens, “Have you got it?” the woman asks. The tall man takes a box from his jacket. Then he opens it. “Look,” he says. “Ahhh!” The woman puts a hand to her mouth, “What a beautiful diamond!” “This is it,” thinks Marcel. “This is the moment.” He bites the tall man’s leg very hard. “Aiiieee!” The tall man throws up his arms. The box and the White Star fly across the room. “What's that on the floor?” one waiter asks. “I don't know,” says another. “Is it...? No, it can't be a diam ...” But before he can finish, Marcel - runs across the room. He puts the White Star around his neck. Then he runs to the door. Oo 3 e e Y e 2 re J i F@eeeoeoooeo The thieves jump up and follow him, Suddenly there are tables and chairs everywhere. “What's happening?” an old man asks. “I don’t know,” his wife answers. “Who can understand young people these days?” “Stop that mouse!” says the tall man, “Shut the door!” says the short one. But they are too late. Marcel runs out of the café and does not look back. After ten minutes he stops. There is nobody following him, but... where is he? Marcel looks right and left. Then he sees a big, white church. “Ah! ~ the Sacré Cocur,” he thinks. "Now I know where I am.” It is late and there are no metro trains, but Marcel is not tired. He walks back to Zaza’s house. When he gets there, she is asleep in bed. 10 There is a table next to the window. On it Marcel can see lots of photographs, boxes and perfume bottles. He runs across the floor and up one leg of the table. he thinks, *... it's time to take off the White Star, In the morning Zaza is going to be very...” “Now. Then Marcel stops. Oh, no! He cannot take the ring off. He pulls and pulls, but nothing happens. “Now what?” he thinks. Then . . .“Of course! Some soap!” He runs down the table leg and across the floor. Zaza’s bathroom door is open. Marcel goes in and looks up. A soap-dish is above his head. Ten seconds later he is sitting in it. He puts some soap on his neck. Then he closes his eyes and pulls again. Yes! This time the diamond ring comes off. 2 In the morning Zaza finds the White Star. It is on her bedroom table between two perfume bottles. “But... 1 don't understand,” she says. “Thieves don’t bring ” She looks at the ring. Then she looks at her face in the mirror, Then she looks at the things back. How. ring again. “And why is there soap on it?” She telephones the police. Next day, Zaza’s story is in all the newspapers. “OPERA STAR’s £1,000,000 RING IS SAFER’ says one. : “THIEVES BRING BACK DUPONT DIAMOND” says another, "NOW POLICE ASK, “WHY?” ” And there are lots of photos of Zaza with the White Star.
