Home/School Connections

Dear Families,
As you may already know, some of the areas that we have been focusing on this
year include Mathematics, Literacy, and Physical Health and Development. Therefore,
below are a few, simple ideas/activities that you can do with your child to support his or
her learning and growth in each of those three areas.

1. Mathematics: Numbers and Operations (Counting)

While setting the table, have your child count how many plates, cups, napkins, etc.
you will need
Have your child count how many steps it takes to get from the car to the front door
Have your child count the number of people waiting in line at the grocery store
and/or the number of items you are purchasing

* These activities will help your child to strengthen his or her number sense and build knowledge
of one-to-one correspondence.

2. Literacy: Alphabet Knowledge

Create "alphabet plates" (pictured right)
o Materials: Paper plates, marker, scissors
o Directions: 1) Write the letters of the
alphabet around the edge of a paper plate
(either uppercase or lowercase). 2) Cut in
between each letter. 3) Give the plate to
your child and have them fold down each letter as they spot them in their
surroundings (in the car, at home, at the store, etc.).

*This activity will help your child to strengthen his or her ability to identify and name the letters
of the alphabet.

3. Physical Health and Development: Fine Motor Skills

Make a straw necklace (pictured right)
o Materials: Straws, scissors, string/shoelaces,
tape
o Directions: 1) Have your child use scissors to cut
straws into smaller pieces. 2) Tape down one
end of the string or shoelace, and have your
child thread it through the straws to make a
necklace.

*This activity will help your child to build fine-motor strength (cutting) and coordination
(threading).
