Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Today, modern technology help us to do things easily, variety of tools

and gadgets have been created to supply the unending needs of people. Some

of modern technologies are laptop, net book, iPod, cell phones, tablet and etc.

Most of the students using this kind of modern technology in making their

assignments, research and other activities that they need in school, Some of

them used it for their entertainment and we also using it to communicate other

people such as relatives, love ones, friends, etc. But not all users know the effect

of using this kind of technology in our communication skills.

With the advancement of technology, everybody faces an extreme

change in everything. Generations are now typing, texting and tweeting their

own unique language, watching videos, listening music by using mp3,iPod and

cell phone, taking pictures and even more. People are communicating more by

internet using different websites, and also via their mobile phones and internet.

Modern technology expanding includes everything from chatting, texting

and video call to communicate people far away from you. Using this kind of

communication have a good and bad effect to the students communication

skills. This study is an attempt to get a handle on modern technology use, its
2

users, and the purpose of using and how it affects the communication skills of

the learners

Statement of a Problem

This study aimed to determine the effects of modern technology in the

communication skills of selected students of Grade 7 of Pedro Guevarra

National High School Academic Year 2016-2017.

Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following questions:

1.What is the mean level of the respondents usage of the following

Modern Technology Gadgets, Cell phone/Smartphone, Computers; and

Internet/WIFI?

2. What is the mean level of written communication skills of the

respondents in English?

3. Do modern technology gadgets significantly affect the written

communication skills of the students?

Assumption and Hypothesis

Modern technology gadgets do not significantly affect the written

communication skill of the students?

Significance of the study

This study determined the effect of modern technology gadgets on the

written communication skill of the selected Grade 7 students of Pedro Guevarra

Memorial National High School Year 2016-2017.

Students. In this study, the students will be realized the effects of

engaging in modern technology, if it will give well result on their communication

skills. The researcher thinks that they will be given limitation and correct usage

of technology so that their language communication will not be affected, and

learn to use those modern technology or gadgets on studying to be able to

learn and have a good performances in their academic subjects.

Teachers. This study will inform the teachers the reason why some

students cant concentrate well their studies particularly in their communication,

written and language performances. They will encourage them by telling that

they have to limit the hours using those modern technology like mobile phones

and computers or use it for educational purposes most of the time for their

important things that education students should focus on.

Parents. The parents will be the guide of their children, they will

discipline and monitor the time and different kinds of new technology that their

child used upon knowing the effects of those gadgets on their childrens

communication skills.

Future researcher. This study will benefit other researchers who wish

to have similar studies as they consider background information from the result

of the present study which will serve as template to enhance their further

research.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter consists of review of related literature and related studies.

Related Literature

A mobile phone (also known as a cellular phone, cell phone, a hand

phone, or even simply a phone) is a phone that can make and

receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide

geographic area. It does so by connecting to a network provided by a mobile

phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. By contrast,

a cordless telephone is used only within the short range of a single, private

base station. Boyd, (2006).

Texting feature in mobile phones has become a Gods gift for most of

the people. This feature made this communication very convenient to everyone.

It has become an important part of the daily lives of people, especially to the

Filipinos. According to AHN Media Corp (2010), the Philippines has been

tagged as the texting capital of the world. Many Filipinos exchange text

messages with the use of their mobile phones. People have become frequent

texters, and they have started sending messages in shortened ways. This

problem cropped up with the innovation of this new technology, and its possible

effects on the students language proficiency. (Moore, 2010).

6

According to Estuar et al. (2006), aside from the internet, mobile phones

were used in pro-democracy movements. Mobile phones were relatively

cheaper and more affordable and accessible, especially to a larger group of

people belonging to the poorer groups in the society. The mobile phone made

communication so easy and possible regardless of time and space barriers by

increasing its utility in political mobilizations and mass persuasions. As

evidenced from the Philippines, for example, optimal use of mobile phones

texting capability helped in bringing down a corrupt president through the

People Power II that occurred last 2001.

Estuar et al. also said that during those historical moments, the use of

cellular phones had filtered through Filipinos everyday life, especially to the

youth of Metro Manila. Texting through mobile phones as a new technology

hence played a vital role in the swift alignment of political consciousness,

especially among the multitude of young Filipino people.

Recent news from United Kingdom reports about a Scottish pupil who

submitted an essay in shorthand form like texting. According to Cramb as cited

in Pryosen, (2009), this is because of frequent use of mobile phones and text

messaging. The student said she found it easier than standard English. The

Scottish Qualifications Authority said that text messaging language was

inappropriately used. Gillespie as cited in Pryosen, (2009), the Scottish

Teacher Parent Council, said that the deterioration in spelling and grammar

proficiency of the student is an effect of frequent text messaging.

Related Studies

According to the journal entitled Communication Research Trends

Gonzales, (2011) Telephony may seem an unusual communication technology

for education, but the advent of smart phones and various kinds of conferencing

(including videoconferencing) have a led a number of teachers and educational

programs to took more carefully at its possibilities.

According to Park, (2011). The use of mobile or wireless devices for the

purpose of learning while on the move, telephone supported learning can appear

either as distance education or a classroom supplement. Park (2011) proposes a

classification of different kinds of mobile learning based on the technological

affordances of the devised employed and on Transactional distance

As cited by Mary joy Aquino on her research entitled Electronic media

Exposure, As mentioned by sharpes (2007), Mobile phones theoretically make

learner-centered learning possibly by enabling students to customize the transfer

and access to information in order to build up their skills and knowledge and to

meet their own educational goals.

Another statement, Teens are depending on their cellphones to boost their

self-esteem. It has been said that getting a call or a text has become a sign of

popularity.

As cited by Nacion (2012) on her research Mobile Gadgets; Its effect in

the academic performance of students. Teenagers in particular are going other

8

hobbies so they can spend all their cell phones. Some lack confidence of

themselves so getting more messages makes them feel wanted.

According to Kukuiska-hulme (2010). She and her team found differences

in the uses to which students put mobile telephones in the different countries they

studied. For Example, Australians sent photos and recorded videos for use in

presentations; those in Hong Kong used dictionaries to practice English and

downloaded books; the Portuguese participants took quizzes and listened to

podcast; those in Sweden listened educational radio, learned songs or conferred

with some expert friends and those in the U.K sent texts to the moblog community

and read blogs. After tracking changing uses over the years of the study kukulska-

hulme urges a learner-centric design of using communication technology.

Mobility, awareness of context and learners specific needs become genuinely

important stimuli for adoption of mobile technologies and innovative design for

learning.

Pertierra, Ugarte, Pingal, Hernandez and Dacanay as cited in Estuar,

(2004), wrote an all-inclusive account of the social consequences of

commonness in mobile phone use in the Philippines, with the conclusion that

cellphones have become a major icon in Philippine life, in that it has extended

the scope of social relationships. And from 1994 to 2002, cellphones in the

Philippines were mainly used for texting.

9

The statement above state the different conclusion of other researcher

in their own study. They mentioned some effect of using mobile phones and

other problem that we encounter by using this device.

The computer has also disadvantages aside from the fact that it provides

the students informations and other features. In the research they conclude

many students spent more time playing rather than researching and doing

another academic works. This is a result to computer addiction. From these

students, huge percentage of them is male. This shows that male students are

more prone to be affected by computer disadvantages. The research goal is to

inform the students about what computer can really do to them, how can it

affects them and what it is that affects them. The researchers proved that the

research made is really true and precise because they are also once addicted

in using these so called computers Vista, Tan and Yaranon, (2009).

METHOD OF RESEARCH AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the methods and statistical techniques to be used

in conducting this research. It describes the research design, sampling

technique, respondents of the study, the instrument, the data, gathering

procedures, data presentation and statistical analysis of the data.

Method of Research

This study made use the descriptive method of research. A descriptive

research is a second broad class of non-experimental study which purpose is

to describe and sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis

generation or theory development. This research method was appropriate

since this answered how the respondents are affected by the use of modern

technology in their communication skills.

The areas of concern were the effects of modern technology on the

communication skills of Grade 7 students of thePedro Guevarra Memorial

National High School, Santa cruz, Laguna of the Academic Year 2016-2017.

The respondents of the study were the selected Grade 7 of the Pedro

Guevarra Memorial National High School 2016-2017.

The researcher chooses only twenty (20) students through the

purposive sampling to identify the total number of actual respondents.

11

The researcher studied more relevant theories and literatures from

books, thesis, journals and internet related study to formulate a questionnaire.

The questionnaire was made by the researcher subsequently presented,

analyzed, and checked by the adviser to ensure the validity of responses

elicited from the respondents.

Justification of the Study

The questionnaire is the main tool used in gathering the data. A

questionnaire is a quick and efficient way to obtain information from the

respondents. Checklist and open-ended types of questions were used in the

questionnaire that helped the respondents answered easily.

To obtain reliable information from the said instrument, the rating, range,

description and interpretation below was used to interpret the data gathered

with the use of the checklist

This section of the study discussed statistical treatment used in this

study.

The mean is used to determine the mean level of the respondents

usage of the following Modern Technology Gadgets in terms of cell

phone/smart phones, computers and internet/wifi. \mean is also used to find

the mean level of written communication skills of the respondents in English.

And t-test is used to determine if Modern Technology Gadgets significantly

affect the written communication skills of the students.

12

The mean and standard deviation will be used for the descriptive

presentation of data. The major statistical tools used in this study were t-test to

determine if Modern Technology Gadgets significantly affect the written

communication skills of the students
