Cold weather setting in! No olectrical power available! Now is the tine to change lubricating oils to those lubricants specially formulated to low tenperature flow characteristics. Zero weather can stop a crushing plant cold unless the operator understands how low tomperatures affect the machines! working parte. In climates whore lubricant tenperatures are below 30° F at start-up and do not climb much above 70° F at the end of a crushing day, and where electrical power for an oil inmersion heater is unavailable, the following recommendations should be given con- sideration when choosing a suitable lubricating of] for a Symons Cone Crusher or Nordberg Gyradise. Lubricating oils as specified in the instruction manual; 350 SSU @ 100° F, SS ssU 9 210° F, 90 VI minimum, are too viscous or heavy to permit satisfactory operation of a crushor at low operating temperatures. At thos viscosities the main relief valve located at the crusher just cannot bypass enough oil back to the oil tank to oliminate lifting of the eccentric assembly which reduces the running clearance between the main shaft and inner eccentric bushing and still pormit satisfactory crusher lubrication. Lifting of the eccentric assembly can cause localized heating at the upper portion of the inner eccentric bushing, causing the crusher to work harder and increase wear on the inner and outer eccentric bushings and to the top of the eccentric and underside of the socket. An oil immersion heater is recommended when lubricant temperatures drop to 60° F or below. However, it is recognized that in some installations there is no source of electrical power to operate a heater during the time the crusher is not operating. In those instances the following lubricating oils are reconmended: 1. SHC Fluids - synthesized hydrocarbons 3. Do not use kerosene or fuel ofl to dilute regular circulating oils! IMPORTANT NOTE - Do not use these lubricants if electrical power is available for an oil immersion heater or if lubricant temperatures reach 70° F. Both the lubricating ofl and the hydraulic oils will become thicker at low temperatures and at extreme conditions may even gel or solidify. Lubricacton O11 In order to provide adequace lubrication of crusher bearings, we recommend operation of the crusher with lube ofl temperatures of at least 15°C(60°F) It {e recommended that Lf the oll temperature drops below this temperature during a shutdown period, an electric tnmersion of1 heater should be used to warm the oil. Circulate the of1 with the lube pump until the return Line ofl temperacure reaches 15°C (60°F) or greater before starting the crusher. At ambient temperatures below -20°C (0°F) it may be necessary to keep che ofl heater ind pump running any time the crusher 1s not operating. Insulation around the of] tank and piping vill also help maintain ofl temperatures above 15°C (60°F). If electric heaters are not available, we recommend changing o11 to one of the lover viscosity oils listed on TD3-100, Page 1. These oils can be used as long as the ofl temperature at the drain Line does not exceed 20°C (70°F). An air/oil cooler can be used to keep the oil below this limit as the weather etarta to verm. The normal lubrication oil should be replaced when weather permits before summer operation, Hydraulic O11 The hydraulic system on the Onnicones not only makes adjustment of the crusher setting eaay but also protects the crusher against overloads due to tramp iron or stalls. The release cylinders must push the hydraulic ofl {n the upper part of the cylinder through the pore, howe and fittings into the accumulator in order to allow the cavity to release. If the ofl 16 too cold, it will not flow freely to the accumilator and thus create a nearly solid system. This can cause danage to the crusher due to the abnor- mally high stresses generated {f the crusher stalls or passes tramp with cold ofl, To prevent damage to crusher, we recommend changing the ofl in the entire hydraulic syetem to an arctic grade fluid with viscosity character{atica per Mil-H-5606 (10.0 cSt (Min) at 54.4°C (130°F); 500 cSt (Max) at -40°C (-40°F); pour point of -59.4°C (-75°F) Max). Such lubricants must have a high viscosity index, rapid water separation, resist foaming, offer some rust and corrosion protection, resist oxidation and have antiwear additives. E.P. Tubricants also have the desirable higher viscosity index values and usually much lower pour points than straight industrial of1 and therefore are well worth their slightly higher cost. Consult the factory for any special recommendations (supplying full information and data), when operating under abnormal conditions, such as when handling hot materials or when operating in extreme climates or atmospheric conditions or where heating or cooling facilities are not available. For normal, all year operating conditions, corresponding to oi] temperatures leaving the crusher at below 140° Fahrenheit, but preferably above 80° Fahrenheit, the lubricant should have a viscosity of 470 to 575 SSU (Seconds, Saybolt Universal) at 100° Fahrenheit and a viscosity of 60 to 70 SSU at 210° Fahrenheit, corresponding to a viscosity index of 90 or higher. They are available from all major oil companies. Improper lubricants can ruin the crusher and their use will void any warranties pertaining to such crushers, IF DESIRED, HIGH PERFORMANCE LUBRICATING OILS MAY ALSO BE USED, SUCH AS AN E.P. LUBRICANT WITH SPECIAL ADDITIVE PACKAGES WHICH KILL MEET THE VISCOSITY REQUIREMENTS STATED ABOVE. DUE TO THE HIGHER COST OF THESE TYPES OF LUBRICATING OILS, THE COST MUST BE JUSTIFIED WITH ANY IMPROVEMENT IN BUSHING PERFORMANCE. Whenever a diesel engine is required as the driving unit on a crusher, the ENGINE manufacturer must be contacted in order to find out what THEIR EQUIVALENT diesel horsepower is to the ELECTRIC horsepower, at the speed (RPM), shown on the foundation drawing (use the CONTINUOUS horsepower rating of the diesel engine). All horsepower ratings shown on the foundation drawings and in the product sales bulletins are based on ELECTRIC HORSEPOWER. Using a diesel engine with insufficient horsepower could cause a crusher to stall at intermittent peak overloads. Likewise using too great of horsepower could cause the crusher to be OVERPOWERED. Most of the time, this can be readily seen by frequent adjustment ring movement. BUT overpowering a crusher Could also cause UNSEEN premature wear or failure of the internal components of the crusher WITHOUT any adjustment ring movement. It should also be pointed out that in addition to the crusher power requirements, a LARGER size engine will be required if the customer is adding cooling fans, Power take-offs, torque convertors, pumps and especially where GENERATOR SETS are used for either prime or stand-by power applications.
