MAKATO AND
THE COWRIE
SHELL

I SETTINGS
In a village called Mon and a city named Sukhothai.

II. PLOT
The boy named Makato is planning to go to the land by the name of Sukhothai where a
great and kind king named Pra Ruang is ruling the land. He met an old woman whose
husband is a mahout of the king. He helped the mahout of the king and met the king
himself. He received a single cowrie shell as a gift. He used the shell to buy lettuce seeds and
proceeded to grow them. Once the king passed by the elephant sheds again, Makato waited
for a chance to present his biggest lettuce to him. The king was amused by Makatos
intelligence and industry and got a job in the palace. After years have passed, Makato grew
tall and handsome with the kings complete trust in him. He was promoted to higher ranks
until he was the most important person in the kings court. He was also happily married to
the beautiful young daughter of the king. After that, the king made him the ruler of Mon.

III. Conflict
Makato is an Orphan boy. He works very hard for him to live.

IV. Characters
Makato is the main character of the protagonist who is industrious, adventurous
and intelligent. Pra Ruang is the king of Sukhothai. The old woman and the mahout of the
king helped Makato.

V. Characterization
Makato, despite being an orphan, became very successful because of his
hardworking personality and intelligence.

VI. Point of View


The story is told in the third-person.

VII. Theme of the Story


The theme of the story is being a hardworking person and using your initiative
in order to live and become successful in life.
