Remembering L Quyn
In a developing land where the people continue to pick up the remains of their broken
past, Vietnam and its people embrace the sorrows of life. Although Vietnams national anthems
chant the feats and pride of the country, the true anthems of Vietnam are those that embrace the
(Remembering the Time We Loved), L Quyn gains wide reception from her audience by
Living in Vietnam L Quyn has catered to her audience by embracing her musicality
through her style of music and voice. Throughout the song, she sings with a rhythmic style called
Rumba Bolro, which is popular to Vietnamese dancing. This style of music involves
suggestive movements of the body, particularly the hips, footwork and arms styling, and is
sensations and delights unmatched in their evocative power (Le). As L Quyns voice carries
the sad storyline of two broken lovers, audiences are tempted to sway along in sadness. By
creating a piece that the audience is able to relish in rhythmic sorrow, L Quyn convinces the
audience to join in the spirit of her desolate ballad. However, the style of music is not the only
reason why L Quyns song attracts audiences. Her powerful voice, s hu cht ging ni lc
y tnh cm, dit m khng km phn nng nn, cm xc v d chm ti tri tim ca ngi
nghe nhc (possesses a voice full of emotion that does not kill but is equally passionate, that is
emotional and her music touches the hearts of many) (PhunuToday). Although this song has
been performed several times, nhiu khn gi khng th khng nh ti nhng ca khc lm
(audiences cannot help but remember the song that made her name and that went deep into the
fans hearts asRemembering the Time We Loved) (PhunuToday). Her deep and calming
voice rings throughout her audience's bodies, influencing them to feel her pain, yet listen in awe
to her melancholy and powerful voice as she cries the climax of the song, li bao hi tic khi
khc tn ngi. Gi mi trong m bun (There is only regret left with his name engraved in
my heart. I call him at night in sadness). As a result of her miraculous voice and style of music,
audiences are soothed into numbness where pain ceases to heal their hearts, leaving them with a
lasting impression.
Along with her gift of utilizing her musicality to appeal to her audience, L Quyn has
spoken to her people through the symbolic lyrics in Nh Mt Thi Ta Yu. In the
beginning of the chorus she sings Th thi ta l la xa bn b (It is too late because we are
apart). Even though at face value, the lyrics do not seem to be symbolic, there is a hidden
meaning to it. The overall translation of the line describes how this couple is torn apart; however,
tradition for a newly wedded couple to leave off a dock to signify their marital status, but L
Quyn adds the fact that she missed out (Th thi ta l). For the Vietnamese audience it can
mean that she is too late, and now they are apart or she missed out when they left the dock.
Regardless, her audience connects this metaphor that this relationship is demolished. By using
Vietnamese tradition and history in her lyrics, L Quyn relates to her audience more because
they understand the intensity of her pain. Also throughout her chorus, L Quyn sings several
metaphors that reveal to the audience the richness and uniqueness of the song. For instance,
Cun mnh trong ni nh cho n bao gi, translates I wrap these memories around me; how
long will I keep doing this? Although she is not literally wrapping her experiences, she indicates
the extent to how emotional and influential her past relationship was to her and how she still
remembers the old feelings and cannot forget them. When she sings Ma xun nay cht vng
phai no n, she compares the beautiful times to nature. This means that the spring has
perished and is fading away, which in turn translates to her audience that the blissful moments
in the relationship has died and continues to disappear. Bringing the chorus to a close, she cries,
li bao hi tic khi khc tn ngi. Gi mi trong m bun, (Only regret left with his
name engraved. I call him at night in sadness). It is only at this point when the audience truly
begins to feel the extreme loss she has. As she attempts to relate to her audience, she hopes to
communicate that instance when a deep loss is engraved in one's soul, and all one can do is call
out in sorrow. Now most of her audience comprehends the depth of the storyline. Even after she
shouts her last words, the audience is left with shivers and a clear image of a lover trying to
forget about her past. Had L Quyn simply explained that she was depressed and she broke up
with her lover, audiences would not appreciate the piece as much. However, by visually and
emotionally appealing to people through her metaphorical lyrics, L Quyn achieved a massive
population of Vietnamese people through her ability to embrace her musicality and deliver
symbolic lyrics. As her song carries throughout Vietnam, her listeners will continue to embrace
the joys and sorrows of life.
