1. Two kg of gas at 10 bar expands adiabatically and reversibly till the pressure falls to 5 bar.
During the process 170 kJ of non-flow work is done by the system, and the temperature drops
from 377C to 250C. Calculate (a) the value of the index of expansion and (b) characteristic gas
constant.

2. A cyclical engine receives 325 kJ of heat from a reservoir at 1000 K, delivers 200 kJ
of work, and rejects 125 kJ of heat to a reservoir at 400 K. Does this engine violate either
the First law or the Second law?
