IS THANDAZA?
Actress Sindi Dlathu’s long absence from our television screens
causes concern, Phakamani Mvelashe reports
TRESS Sindi Dlathu,
who is best known by
her character name
Thandaza, got her fans
worried when Move! revealed
that she collapsed while filming
earlier this year.
The 42-year-old Muvhango
actress from Meadowlands in
‘Soweto was rushed to hospital at
the time and she was treated for
severe fatigue.
The soapie's publicist, Amanda
Ngudle, later confirmed to Move!
that Sindi was on sick leave due
to exhaustion. She added that
the doctor had ordered Sindi to
stay away from the set and not
take any work-related calls.
IS HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF?
Now Thandaza - the powerful
businesswoman, loving wife and
the caring mother that viewers
have come to love over the years
= has once again disappeared
from Muvhango, which airs every
\ Weeknight at 9pm. Muvhango is
d the third most-watched show in
South Africa after Generations - The
fanslong tosee
the powerful
Thandaza,
played by
si Diathu,
back on
their television
screens
CILegacy and newbie, Skeem Sam.
Many actors have come and
gone but Sindi, who has been on
the show since its inception, has
stood the test of time. She has
become the face of the show and
has contributed immensely to its
success. It's hard to imagine her
playing any other role other than
‘Thandaza.
According to the storyline,
Thandaza has gone on a business
trip to Nigeria. Now enquiring
minds want to know if Sindi is off
sick again. Viewers’ concerns over
her are not surprising, considering
that she's one of the most-loved
actresses in the country.
Word on the street is that she
might not have fully recovered
after collapsing on set and could
be on sick leave again.
She has not been on our
television screens for weeks now
and fans have been asking when
she will be coming back.
Muvhango is keeping its cards
pretty close to its chest regarding
the matter. When contacted,
‘Amanda was cagey about the
actress’ whereabouts and said she
had to quickly answer another call.
FATIGUE DUE TO HER
HECTIC SCHEDULE
Sindi's severe fatigue has in
the past been attributed to her
hectic work schedule. She is the
longest serving member of the
Muvhango cast.
She has once revealed in an
interview that her day starts at
4.30am because she has to be at
the studio by 6.30am for make-up
and wardrobe before shooting
her scenes.
"My normal day is about 12 hours.
‘Most people think that being on
television is all glamorous but
honestly, it’s hectic? she said at
the time.
‘Move! tried numerous times to
have an interview with Sindi, but
she kept postponing.
‘Muvhango's publicist has let it
slip to Movel that Sindi is currently
busy with some other business,
which she promised to reveal at
alater date.
“Please give her a month or so.
She's wrapping up a cosmetic deal
‘Amanda said but would not go
into details.
This is news tous as the media-
shy Sindi has never endorsed
anything since starting her career
in the entertainment industry -
besides promoting Muvhango
and doing SABC roadshows.
LETTING HER WORK DO
THE TALKING
The very private actress, who has
featured on numerous productions
including Sarafina, Khululeka and
Soul City, has let her work do the
talking for her.
“Being private wasn’t something
that | consciously planned. It’s
who | am ~ how I've always been,”
she says."If open up too much,
Ifeel like my life will stop being
a journey,’ she told Move! during
an eatlier interview.
The actress says she’s not dazzled
by fame but she appreciates the
love she gets from her fans.
“Idid not get into this industry for
fame. To me, this is a job just like
any other. m working,’ she says.
Sindi has been married for 19
years and has no children. The fact
that she plays the role of being
Vusi and Dakalo’s mother so well in
‘Muvhango makes it hard to believe
that she doesn't have her own kids.
“I want kids but | don’t have them
as yet. But | really want them,"she
told a popular blog.
HER PASSION FOR MUSIC
She started her acting career in
the musical, Sarafina, so it was no
surprise when she promised to
release an album a few years ago.
“I've decided to diversify my
career. Iwill be releasing my
new album in 2011 around May.
This album will be a deliciously
eclectic mix of maskandi, afro-pop
and hints of electric guitar. Keep
watching’ she blogged. But the
album has not materialised yet. OT
Playing her part so well has earned
hera spot in viewers’ hearts
