Course Information and Description

Integrated Social Studies is a required course for graduation from North Bullitt High
School. Students must successfully complete this course to receive a credit for diploma.

This course will provide you with an introduction to Civics, Geography, and Economics.
The course is divided into two semesters. We will be studying Civics the first semester
and Geography and Economics the second semester. During your study of Civics, you
will learn how the government affects the lives of citizens and how to better understand
your roles and responsibilities as a citizen. In Geography you will develop geographical
skills that will enable you to better understand and appreciate the place where you live
as well as places around the world. You will also learn how your life is interconnected
with the lives of people around the world and will discover that geography is about much
more than knowing where places are. In Economics you will learn about markets,
supply, demand, and how economic decisions are made. Some topics of discussion will
be:

Civics
o The history of American democracy
o The Constitution and Bill of Rights
o Rights and responsibilities of American citizens
o The Three Branches of Government (Legislative, Executive, Judicial)
o State and local governments
o The law and the individual
o Types and Purposes of Government
o Foundations of Government
Economics
o Types of economies
o Supply and Demand
o Economic Decisions-outsourcing, types of production, opportunity cost
Geography
o The Five Themes of Geography
Location
Place
Human-Environment Interaction
Movement
Regions

Supplies
Pens/Pencils
1 inch binder with dividers
Folder to keep work handed back
Loose leaf/ binder filler paper
School-issued chrome book-charged and ready for class every day

Policies and Procedures

Binder:
You must bring your binder to class every day. Your binder will be used for class notes
and assignments. You should also keep handed back tests and quizzes in your notebook
as they will help you to study for the final.
Dividers must be labeled: Warm ups, Notes, Vocabulary, Classwork, Cool downs

Quizzes/Tests:
Pop-quizzes will be given but are always open note, to check how well you have been
taking notes. Section quizzes are announced ahead of time and I will always let you
know at least a week before a Unit Test.
If you miss a quiz or test due to an absence, you are expected to make it up the day you
return. You are responsible for getting the quiz or test from me. You may take the test
before or after school the day you return if you make prior arrangements.

Make-up Work/Late Work:

Students absent from school will have the amount of time they were out + one day to
make up work. It is the responsibility of the student, not the teacher, to get all
missing assignments upon his/her return to school.
There is an absent work section in the classroom divided by days for you to collect any
work you missed.
There will be a grade level deduction for all projects and long term assignments turned
in after the assigned due date. A letter grade will be deducted for each day it is late.

Cell Phones:
Given that students now have access to chrome books, there is no reason for students to
have cell phones out during class time. Students will be given one verbal warning to
put their device away. Failure to do so will result in confiscation of the phone for the
duration of the class period. If the student becomes argumentative or refuses to hand
over their phone they will be written up for defiance and their phone will be sent to the
office.
Cell phone usage during independent work is up to teacher discretion.
Food/Drink:
Water bottles are the only food and drink permitted during class, with medical
exceptions.

Attendance:
In order to be counted as present, students must be in the room, in their assigned seat
when the bell rings.

Student of the Week:

Each Friday, one student in each class will be selected as the Student of the Week based
on attendance, participation, work ethic, and behavior. This student will receive a pass
which can be exchanged for any of the following rewards:
Candy bar of choice
HW exemption pass
Teacher assistant for a day
1-day extension on project or essay
5 points extra credit on a test
