BYOT Class Room Procedures

What is DefCon?

Here are the class room DefCon guidelines for the use of BYOT during class. If the class is at
DefCon Red, this will be annotated by a huge red blinking light at the front of the class room that
Mr. Richbourg uses, than all devices have to turn off, and be stowed away. That means they
have to be out of sight, such as placing phones in a pocket, or tablets in a protective case in a
back pack.

When we are at DefCon Yellow, students will have their devices out on their desks. While the
teacher is lecturing, they will place the devices, face down, or close them (laptops) and place
them in the right top corner of their desks. After lecture and assignments have been given out,
students will be instructed to use their devices. When in use, devices will stay parallel to the
desks for tablets and phones, and laptops will remain open at a 135 degree angle. At no time will
students be hiding their screens from the instructor.

When the class is given DefCon Green status, the students are allowed to work at leisure on their
BYOT to complete open assignments, begin new assignments. If all work is done at a
satisfactory level the students need to address that with Mr. Richbourg, there are applications that
are approved for use during this period that will enhance your studies.

More Cues!

There will be times when students are working diligently on assignments and I will need to get
your attention, to do this, I will turn the lights on and off while simply saying Students,
Students, Students. This is to help break your concentration on the current task as we are
beginning to move on to the next task and I need you to disconnect from your devices. Often
times, the class will transition from DefCon Green to DefCon Yellow, or DefCon Red.

If I need to draw the classs attention to something specific, I will use the phrase Eyeballs.
This serves to let the students know that they need to be looking at what I am doing, and paying
attention to how I am doing it. This is often related to how-to instructions that will benefit you
later.

OH NO the internet died!

From time to time there may be issues with the WIFI or your personal device that may hinder
your ability to complete your task. Never fear my student as we are prepared. Every lesson we
do will have hard copies (paper copies) in the front of the class in the box on my desk labeled
TODAY. If it is a device issue and you have to use one due to work being stored on Google
Drive, then you can check out one of the rooms devices, but only after you have signed for it,
and the teacher has authorized it.
