Topic: ASL and Deaf culture in America

Audience: 4-H students in Idaho (ages 6-12)

Learners Outcomes: After this lesson students will be able to:

1. Identify someone using sign language

2. Know basics of deaf culture

3. Sign the Pledge of alligance

4. Know basics of deaf history

Resources: -My knowledge of ASL Pictures Laptop presentation ASL alphabet card

Review: I will be teaching students about deaf culture and history in America. They will also learn how to
sign the Pledge of Allegiance in ASL

Overview:

Introduction: Start out by welcoming the kids in ASL without talking (2 minutes)

1. In sign "Welcome to my ASL Class, today I will be teaching you about ASL history and culture." I
then speak the same thingand tell students number of deaf people just in Idaho, then the US
and then the world. I will then tell them a very short overview of the history of ASL in the US and
the use of sign around the world (8 minutes)
2. I will then teach the kids how to say the pledge of Alegence in ASL. (10 minutes)

Establishment of setting: Have students sit in a half circle(1 minute)

Presentation/Exercises: Tell students about deaf culture/history in America. Teach students Pledge.

Closure: Teach them how to sign "good by" and "thank you".
