Applied Pedagogies

Weekly Journal Paper Two:

This journal entry is about how NASA/JPL used the five Es to teach the lesson. I will be
talking about the volcano lab we did on the first week.

The first week we learned about mapping a volcano and what it looks like for astronauts to learn
about the land they will be visiting. The five Es are engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and
evaluate.

Engage: How the men at NASA got us to think and get excited about the topic was that he had
a 20 minute lecture about the basics on what different volcanoes are and volcanos on Mars.

Explore: He separated us into groups of 4-5 and asked us to think about the different layers on
Earth and Mars and how they would look over time.

Explain: He explained what we will be doing and what the materials we will be using for the
project. When he walked around he clarified any questions we could think of.

Elaborate: After we all finished the first section of the project he got us all together to talk about
what we did and observe. When we finished talking he gave us a new task on how to collect
data.

Evaluate: The way the professor evaluated us was that we had to switch projects with another
team and talk about what we think is happening and how we came up with their conclusions.
